vilakins: Vila with a party hat and a glass of wine (xmas)
A fun and relaxed (and possibly also merry, as that means "pleasantly tipsy" to me) Christmas to all who celebrate it!

It's just past the summer solstice which means it doesn't get dark till 9:30 down here, yet there are still a few people who light up their houses US-style. I hope they do it again at Matariki (our latest holiday) next year; we so need a winter festival of light, and it will at pretty much the same time in our winter as Christmas is in the northern one, just after that solstice.

Aucklanders were released this month after a long lockdown and travel ban. Seen yesterday outside a steampunk shop: "Welcome to Orclanders who have escaped Mordor!"

On to the questions. Enlighten me on #23 if you can.

22. Is there anything about technology that scares you?
Data mining: how much companies and other entities might know about me because of my online activity. Not that any of it's unlawful; I just value my privacy.

23. What’s a word/phrase that’s commonly heard in your region, but not anywhere else?
Wee!
It's not unique to here, but since we moved down south, Greg and I have been fascinated and amused by its wide and varied usage. When the English boy in Derry Girls complained about it being used for everything regardless of size, we both cracked up. I only use it for size, as in "a wee bit" of something, but people here use it as a catch-all adjective. They call Oamaru "our wee town", have wee jobs and businesses, and live in wee houses. Is it a term of affection, which I originally thought? Not really, as when I got my last Covid shot, I was asked to take a wee chair, and who would feel fondness for a generic plastic one? I have had wee haircuts and asked how I liked my wee meal, and all our wee seasonal festivals have been cancelled this year.
Ha!
Our neighbour just texted, "There's a wee present at your front door". There was indeed: two (normal-sized) bottles of the wonderful craft beer he brews and a delicious Christmas cake (i.e. a fruitcake) his partner made. YUM!
Anyway, if you live in a "wee" region, does it mean anything specific to you, or is it just a filler word?

24. Do you bite on straws, lollipop handles, or ice-block sticks?
No. And not on pens, hair, or fingernails either. (And if that's drink straws, they're mostly steel these days.)

A fun Christmas Star Wars video from the Swiss police; you don't need to know any German. I love the sign at 1:22 - the Empire could well argue that it doesn't apply to them. At the end you can see the labels on the gifts: "Für Luke von Papi" and "Für Leia". :-D

Translation of their festive greetings:
We wish you happy holidays.
May the Force of peace and serenity be with you.
Your Canton Police Bern

vilakins: (mince pies)
Wishing you light, love, and joy, whether you celebrate or not!

We haven't got any Christmas decorations, but I suppose I could have got out the summer holiday lights (50s-style caravans, tomato sauce bottles, pohutukawa blossoms, and jandals/thongs/flip-flops though they all seem to be hidden behind bigger lights...) but it doesn't get dark till 10pm.

Last night at a friend's place though I took a photo of their only Christmas decoration.

Haha, I would love one of these! )

From [community profile] thefridayfive , a good excuse for me to make a post:

1. Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas – which one do you use?
Mostly "Merry Christmas" because most people here celebrate it. "Happy Holidays" isn't really used by people (companies do though) but it actually applies here since most people take their summer holidays now. (Not me though; I prefer it when schools are back and the weather's more settled.)

2. Do you own an ugly Christmas sweater?
It's summer, so no one here does that. Why does anyone though? Just asking - is it a sort of joke, like wearing the ugliest thing you can find?

3. Do you celebrate the Winter Solstice?
Unfortunately our winter drags on with nothing to enliven it. (Except for this town with steampunk weekend, so that's something, though it's not at the solstice.)

4. Now that you are ‘in the know,’ what would you leave out for St. Nick on the 24th?
I was always in the know, never having believed in Santa / been told that particular lie. St Nicholas however was a real person and if he happened to pass while throwing dowries in the windows of poor girls, I'd offer a bite to eat and a cup of tea.

5. Tired of the snow and icky weather yet? For those fortunate people in the other hemisphere, are you tired of the humidity and hot weather?
I'm sick of rain like everyone else in this country. Summer's been very late this year, what with cold and rain for two months. The sun is shining today though - YAY -and I'm hoping it will for more than one day this time.
vilakins: Vila wanting to live forever (live forever)
I haven't posted for a while because I have a backlog of photos and can no longer get into flickr, damn them, as I don't have a yahoo email address and don't want one. After looking around, I found imgur, though I suppose that won't last long either.

This is what I found in the car when we went to the vet to get supplies and left the windows down because it was a hot day. I laughed as I do love an unexpected cat.

This cat lives at a nearby house but hangs out at the vet, testing their cat beds. She's pretty friendly and was happy to be picked up and carried away. Her nose is slightly green; she must have had it buried in the grass.

Three more seasonal ones including Christmas lilies in our garden, the Christmas Farmers Market, and a stuffed Queen Victoria )

And with that, I wish everyone who celebrates a great day, and everyone who'd off on holiday safe journeys and a good time.

I've been having a discussion about Christmas stories and traditions, and secret Santa which reminded me of this Farmers (department store) TV ad about one. There are not many ads I don't FF through or mute, but these are among them.

I should add that the milk and biscuits/cookies are an American import. Note: yes, it's summer here.

There's also a cute series of short ads about a man called Noel who might be Santa working at New World supermarket:
New World Christmas
It must be Christmas (we don't drink milk like Americans do so that's why the stares)
Santa's Grotto
Santa stocks up on carrots
Are you Santa?

I wish everyone a great Christmas however they celebrate it.

Sorry about the type-casting, Vila! Click for full size.

I'm not sure why there are stars on the floor, but I liked them.

It's Christmas morning here and the roads will be empty, which is why I will be hitting the one going south shortly.

I hope you all have a great day!

And you guys, I got a comm full of gifts (many members only)! I am just overwhelmed. I haven't been able to look at them all because I really have to leave now, But I'll be online again tonight. Thank you so much to everyone involved, especially [personal profile] kerravonsen who arranged it. It really, really made my day!

See you all in several hours! Hugs to all of you.

I thought I'd link to some seasonal stories of mine since it's Christmas eve here.

Let There Be Light - Vila tries to celebrate the Festival of Lights

Seven Gifts - Vila's given up on life but he receives seven gifts which change his mind

The Star - the crew are looking for a certain star

Three Wishes - the Christmas Fairy visits Scorpio. A bit silly. :-P
