TV started in this country 50 years ago today, and we just watched a celebrity gameshow based on a lot of the people and the local and overseas programs on our screens since then. I don't normally go for gameshows (except for University Challenge and Mastermind, now sadly long gone) but this was a fun format to show a lot of clips from the past. The teams didn't take it seriously at all so it was a lot of fun, and I'm amazed that Lucy Lawless (who lives here now) could sing an entire KFC ad from 1975. Lucy's team won on audience applause, yay!

Another actor I was surprised to see turned up in an ad during the show. We usually zap them with the good old TiVo, but we recognised Matthew Fox from Lost and went back for a look. He's advertising an eye roll-on by L'Oreal (I googled it) which has vitamin C and caffeine to reduce bags. WTH? And here's proof it was him (mouse over the photos). And look, Evangeline Lilly is a 'spokesmodel' too. Jack and Kate, bwahahaha. Pity they never got Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson to do something as well: head depilatories for Locke and vitamin E cream for Ben's many facial scars perhaps?

This is what I'm taking to the Lost finale party tonight.

Two mangos (which I found today), two paw-paws, two vicious hunting (well, kitchen) knives, and two packets of Dharma chocolate cookies. There's a DI serial number under each one using combinations of The Numbers. I was going to have a go at piping logos onto digestive biscuits but I decided this was a lot easier. We can have them with coffee from the ridiculously expensive espresso machine Greg's company bought.

Here are some very inventive Lost-themed cakes though.

I considered photoshopping (or GIMPing) my name onto this Oceanic flight ticket but we don't have a colour printer.

I'm not looking forward to getting there and back. It will be dark and wet and I haven't been to the new offices before. I don't like driving in the dark anyway, but get nervous when it's wet and I can't see any road markings. But it will be fun once I'm there.

vilakins: Vila with stars superimposed (hurley)

Dude. Only one sleep to go!

There are several other Lost fans at Greg's work, so he's organised a finale party in the boardroom there: big screen, comfy leather chairs, and pizzas. I'm bringing the episode, two large paw-paws (closest I could get to mangos, and they taste fairly alike), and a hunting knife. Well, one of my more scary-looking kitchen knives. Are any of you watching with others?

In the meantime, have some Lost links.

Lost's top 10 characters - a good list with an order I greatly approve of with some excellent comments about each character. They give the source at the end, but it's a lot easier to read on the LJ post.

An essay about being on Lost by Jorge Garcia (Hurley), published in Variety.

Lost stars on Star Trek - and some crossovery explanations. See a younger Terry O'Quinn as Admiral Pressman, Daniel Dae Kim as Gotana-Retz, an alien lost in time (who sings a little ditty about two minutes in), Alan Dale as Praetor Hiren, and others.

Lost bobbleheads and figurines (scroll down) - not that great a selection, and some odd choices in clothes and pairings. I mean, Kate and Ben? I'd consider the Locke and Hurley pair but dude, why is Hurley in his mental home gear?

Smokey gets his own spin-off comedy show - "Smokey's House": a heart-warming comedy at a California orphanage. I think he killed the camera person though.

This is what Jasmin looks like now, at almost ten months, compared to what she was in early December when watching Spock on TV. Here she is looking at Sawyer in the Lost season finale last night. Told you she liked SF!

Actually it was quite funny: I took about five photos of her and kept getting Jack on the screen. DO NOT WANT!

Jasmin and Sawyer

As a bonus, here are two cuddly Jasmin and Ashley pictures. )

I know I said I wasn't going to post about Lost any more because hardly anyone reads, but dude, this is a Locke ep, and it rocked.

Have faith )

A really excellent ep, and I can't wait for more.

It seems that some people were concerned about the Telmarines in Prince Caspian being dark and rather Arab-looking. I knew they were in fact part Pacific Islander (though we're not told that in the film, sadly), so I looked it up. (No spoilers for the film, just where the Telmarines came from centuries before.)

Aslan says:
Many years ago in that world, in a deep sea of that world which is called the South Sea, a shipload of pirates were driven by storm on an island. And there they did as pirates would: killed the natives and took the native women for wives.
Huh, what a euphemism! Anyway, they got drunk and fought etc, and six fled with their 'wives' and found the cave and the door to Narnia's world. So they'd be half Pacific Islander, and it's not a stretch that the pirates could hae been Spanish or some race other than English. The medieval Spanish feel in the film was a nice, slightly foreign touch, and the Wikipedia says that they deliberately used Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese actors.

Anyway I read on and book Aslan tells the Telmarines more about the island:
It is no bad place. The race of those pirates who first found it has died and it is without inhabitants. There are good wells of fresh water, fruitful soil, timber for building, fish in the lagoons, and the other people of that world have not yet discovered it.
Aha, I said, it's the Lost island, and now we know who the Others are (and perhaps how Ben gets around in space and time).

;-)

This season really does rock.

Spoilery comments )

I do think this season has been very tightly plotted and look forward to the double-ep season finale. I shall be watching it on my own though; Greg the big Lost fan leaves on Tuesday.

I know hardly anyone who watches Lost which is a pity because this season rocks.

Spoilery comments and speculation )

However if anyone wants to discuss any other eps, like the intriguing Ben one, The Shape of Things to Come, feel free. :-)

I saw the final two episodes of Lost's season 1 last week; I'll miss it till it returns next year.

Some spoilery comments )

Lost is being replaced by Desperate Housewives. Now all I know about this is that they're all impossibly beautiful (hey, what has US TV got against real people?), it revived Teri Hatcher's career, and it's as popular in the US as Lost. Now the posters I've seen around town of scantily-clad females who look like models have put me right off. I read somewhere recently that people love to watch the rich and beautiful, but I positively don't. Give me Fat Friends or Teachers any day.

So tell me, those of you who've seen this, is it worth leaving the season pass on the TiVo and giving it a go? Is it clever, witty, and intelligent, or is it the crap soap it looks like to me?

Argh! The Blake's 7 AU/AR ficathon stories are going up and I can't read them till I get home from work tomorrow evening. I spent tonight watching Doctor Who and Lost, then came in here to catch up on LJ and realised I had to post my story. And now it's almost midnight and I'm still not caught up.

Doctor Who was wonderful as usual: go Mickey, Rose's mum, and the wonderful Harriet Jones MP!

As for Lost, the younger Locke with hair looks disconcertingly like Michael Keating does now. Awww. Spoilers )

Just seen on TV:

Revenge of the Sith trailer and review. Hey, you know what? It looks good! The reviewer said that she was disappointed in the first two films, but this one should silence all of Lucas's critics, and Hayden Christensen is excellent as Anakin. I rather think it will be worth another trip to the Circle Lounge.

Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe trailer, and it looks great: impressive scenery and SFX (including lion!), and the children look very WW2 as they should. They mentioned it was the first film so I'm hoping they'll do the other books.

Lost / The Office crossover (recorded this week). Oh, all right, it was just Lost, but they put in a deliberate reference that delighted us. During the flashback to Charlie in London, his very rich girlfriend said her father was away "buying a paper company in Slough". ROTFL.

vilakins: Vila looking questioning (eh?)

Things seen lately include:

  • The HHGTTG clip (in painfully slow-to-load Flash). Zaphod only has one head and everyone but Arthur Dent seems to be American, but--Martin Freeman! Yay!
  • The third ep of Lost, on which I shall comment below as it had some more SF-y clues.
  • The first ep of season 3 of Kath and Kim, an Australian comedy which has the wonderful Magda Szubanski in it. I saw this the same night as Lost, hence the strange crossover drabble below.
Thoughts on Lost, cut for spoilers )

Silly crossover drabble (Farscape/Lost) )
