Kittens

We're off into the equinox gales to see the little kitten I'm getting from a friend in the country in a few weeks. She's the one I got Claudia from, and she also now breeds Bengals who are spotty and leopard-like, but out of our price range (and also liable to be nicked). We're getting another Burmese because Greg likes them and Claudia may be more welcoming to a kitten who is slightly related, but I'd like the next one to be from The Lonely Miaow charity.

There will be kitten picspam tomorrow.

OOH! Oddly enough I was just saying to someone via messenger that I needed to play with a kitten.

I feel I had a deprived childhood, not purposely of course, but being allergic my parents kept me away. Now I am older I know not to stroke the kitten and them rub my eyes/get it all over my clothing etc.

Do wonder where I might be likely to be able to get access to one / several.

I met a nice puppy in the park and had a play with that so I don't feel so deprived on that front now!

I've sometimes reacted to our cats when they've been in certain plants. Do you have a friend with a kitten or young cat?

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
Go to a Cats Protection League home if you can find one near you. They not only take in and re-home strays and unwanted kittens but also take in cats that the owners can no longer look after, for example an elderly person having to go into a care home. They encourage visitors to go amongst these cats and play with them. Granted they won't be kittens but they are just as soothing to pet, even more so as they sit still longer. I'm not sure but they might even let you play with the babies if they have any in at that time.

omg kitten. *jealous!*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
We're getting her at Labour Weekend (the 27th or so)!

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Are you planning on a boy or girl kitten?
One of our last acquisitions we are sure is part Bengal and she was a holy terror with the other older cats until we ended up with another waif and stray who was the same age. Now they largely chase each other and leave the older ones alone unless they make it clear they want to play too.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
We're getting a little girl. We're hoping she'll get on with both cats, so if something happens to Claudia (she has kidney disease) she'll be friends with Vic.

Oooh! Kitten!

Although somehow it always surprises me when I hear people talk about planning to get a cat. In my experience, cats are things that just happen to you. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
My first two did, and so did Vic. Claudia and Tessa were intended as friends for Petra and Claudia respectively, and that worked, so we're hoping the new one will get on well with both her and Vic.

People steal cats? That's horrible. Stealing someone's car or their DVD player is bad enough, but taking their pet? *hates humanity sometimes*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard of it, with unusual cat or dog breeds. It's never happened to anyone I know, I'm glad to say. I did hear about someone whose cat was taken by mistake with her car. I hate a lot of people too, but the ones who abandon animals are even worse. I'd leave those shits in the bush to find their way out without dying.

EEE, kittie! Looking forward to kitpics.

I didn't get that many--more of her adult cats--but they were so cute!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE KITTEN PICSPAM!!!

...I am not allowed pets where I live so I live vicariously through other people's kittens on the internet.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's going to be bedlam here when she arrives! I remember Claudia wanting to bite everything whether it was food or not, and Tessa rewiring the TV and VCR. but kitten!

She will have an icon of her own.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Aww kittie. Looking forward to the pics.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'll have to see how they came out--it was raining so the light wasn't good.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I look forward to teh kitteh pics. :)

I don't know who thought equinox gales would be a good idea, but they aren't. :(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
It started raining once we were over the Bombays: not down but at about 45 degrees. :-P I am still a bit damp from opening farm gates.

That's a great name for a cat charity.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Greg got some of the cats there as well. I'll try to load them up tomorrow.

The Lonely Miaow is a wonderful Auckland organisation which rescues kittens and abandoned cats, fosters them out, and finds homes for them through its website and newspapers. I want just about all of them, but they have hardly any kittens at this time of year and I'm sure Claudia and Vic would more readily welcome a young one then another adult--as it is, Claudia just tolerates Vic who arrived as a grown cat.

Mmmmmmmmmmm, KITTEN!

I had forgotten how adorable those little purr machines are, until ours arrived. I hope all goes well and that Claudia and Vic like her.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Aren't they just adorable!

Me too! I don't want any of them to feel lonely, and I've got a fairly good record of introducing new kittens. Vic was an adult, or I think Claudia might have made friends.

[identity profile] jthijsen.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, I remember how my older cats reacted to my current kittens. There were clear "youth of today, no respect for their elders" expressions on those faces. Fortunately there are two of them so they can take their overabundance of energy out on each other. The oldsters, meanwhile, have all grown quite tolerant and even show some affection sometimes. And that's quite something, because I'm fairly sure that most of them were confirmed only cats before I adopted them.

I hope Claudia and Vic get along great with your new little fuzzball.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think the more cats you have, the easier it is for new ones to be accepted. At Patsy's today, she had about ten adult cats of differing ages roaming about, very friendly with each other, and all of them eager to get to know us. :-) I think it's like the boarding cattery: they're a lot less territorial together.

I'll just have to hope the kitten gets on with both cats and see how it goes. Otherwise we might have to get another kitten for her; always a possibility, though I'm really hoping it all works out.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I remember when we got Lacey - Jassy, older and rather set in her ways, was NOT impressed by a little bundle of fur that wanted to play GERONIMO!!!!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Jassy? Ours will be Jasmin, the only name in a long list I made that Greg also liked. [worries a bit] I do hope she gets on with both of the adults. We're getting her now because Claudia misses Tessa so much.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
how exciting :0)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
And worrying. What if Claudia doesn't like her? :-P

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
The best of luck integrating them, Claudia should have some maternal instinct and not actively attack a kitten, she may even mother it, and Vic will either totally ignore it or take it to his bosom and love it and hug it and probably call it George. I'm going by Sue's experience as a foster parent for the Cats Protection League. She ended up with 11 cats before she gave up , she had a wonderful success rate with raising very young kittens and taming down wild cats but she never really mastered the giving them back to the League for re-homing. All except one settled down nicely together and that one decided he would rather be an only cat and moved in with an elderly couple 4 doors down the street from her and was as happy as Larry .

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! ONe of the seven cats I found homes for was called Larry, and he did just that--moved a few doors away from my friend after she got a dog.

I'm hoping Claudia will love her as she did Tessa. I'm also worried she'll resent us for getting a kitten, but we wouldn't be doing it if she didn't cry so much with loneliness, and despite the number of cuddles she gets.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Bengals are beautiful - a couple of people on my f'list have them, but Burmese are lovely, as well, and that sounds like a good decision for a cat joining your household right now. I'm looking forward to news of the kitten, and pictures, too!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen the Bengals: solid and lovely, and one had the most amazing blue-green eyes like opals. Patsy told me they don't like being picked up or sitting on laps, but that they're very affectionate (the ones I met were certainly very friendly) and like sitting by one's feet.

Occicats are beautiful creatures too; do you know any? I'll be happy with a tabby rescue kitten next time; I do love tabby markings and spots are really only a subset. :-)

I'm a bit worried after some of the comments that Claudia not be very welcoming, but we're getting the kitten because she's missing Tessa so much despite all the extra cuddles and attention.

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, kittenage!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm nervous, hoping the other two will like her. But Claudia is still missing Tessa a lot, so I'm hoping she'll mother this little one as she did with Tessa.

Good luck with your new little friend! I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures. Presumably she's a bit too little to leave her mother for a few weeks? I hope she brings out Claudia's maternal instinct.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
They have to be a certain age and have two lots of shots before they can leave, but her eyes have already turned golden (which surprised Patsy when I pointed it out as it's early for that). I think Tessa's were still fairly blueish.

I hope so too. I'm filled with both anticipation and nervousness, as if Claudia hadn't been so lonely, we'd have waited a while yet.
