What's My Personality Type?

Quel surprise. ;-)

You Are An INTP
The Thinker

You are analytical and logical - and on a quest to learn everything you can.
Smart and complex, you always love a new intellectual challenge.
Your biggest pet peeve is people who slow you down with trivial chit chat.
A quiet maverick, you tend to ignore rules and authority whenever you feel like it.

In love, you are an easy person to fall for. But you're not an easy person to stay in love with.
Although you are quite flexible, you often come off as aloof or argumentative.

At work, you are both a logical and creative thinker. You are great at solving problems.
You would make an excellent mathematician, programmer, or professor.

How you see yourself: Creative, fair, and tough-minded

When other people don't get you, they see you as: arrogant, cold, and robotic

Quel surprise.
Indeed.

When other people don't get you, they see you as: arrogant, cold, and robotic

Hm. And what dark Byronic anti-hero does this remind you of? ::cough::

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
I've always thought Avon was an INTP but others think he's INTJ.

I don't think I've ever been seen as robotic though; just geeky and weird. I can however do robotic things with my arms. :-P

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
This is one of the more flattering descriptions of us I've seen. I wonder what the Type of the person who wrote it is.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've always liked the descriptions!

I can be argumentative in RL as they say, but I've learned to back away and modify my language to be softer and more indirect on LJ and mailing lists and people often think I'm too blunt when they can't see my expression.

[identity profile] thetisonline.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an INTP too. We are rare and beautiful! Logical and creative. Feelings ... what feelings?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, we have feelings! They come to the fore when we're stressed, and because we're not used to them, we might not be able to deal well with them.

Like me being more then usually defeated and depressed lately. However I deal with it by reading and immersing myself in other worlds; distraction works very well.

[identity profile] thetisonline.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I wonder if that is why I overeat when I'm stressed, or even when I feel things strongly ... it converts it into a physical thing with which I at least know how to deal.

Sometimes, it takes me a while to even realise that I'm feeling someting!

I understand using distraction. I tend to do that too. Although sometimes it's a bit like running away ... but I honestly don't know how else to deal with stuff. I wonder sometimes if I ever deal with stuff.

Perhaps INTPs are the world's greatest experts at "denial"? I mean given enough time, it will just go away. I hope.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I overeat too when stressed. I used both strategies yesterday: chocolate, marshmallow Easter eggs, and a book. When I'm really bad, I also sleep, and I did feel tired yesterday now I think of it.

I know there's a lot more to MBTI and how the less dominant bits work, but I do panic and get emotional when things go badly wrong. OTOH Feeling types may get very calm and matter-of-fact in bad situations. I think it depends on whether one is I or E, or what the T or F is paired with, but I haven't really gone into it that deeply.

[identity profile] thetisonline.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
You're right ... I use sleep as well.

There probably is more to it. I found this article (http://www.intp.org/intprofile.html) about the less dominant bits, but that is as detailed as I have ever read. I'm sure expert psychologists would know more.

What worries me is the similarity to actual depression. I have been a sufferer on and off for years. Steve once said that he wondered whether all INTPs were candidates for it, due to their unique personalities.

Sorry: forgot my HTML.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's a very interesting article, and close to what I'm like, Yeah, I prefer to design and plan rather than actually carry out, I'm often fatalistic instead of hoping, and I love SF.

Examples of fictional characters who INTPs have a natural affinity for are Avon (Blake's Seven), Data (Star Trek: TNG) and Seven of Nine (Voyager).
They're spot-on with Data and Seven of Nine, but I never liked Avon much. It was always Vila, as a child and now. Odd really, as I usually go for the geeks, androids, or aliens. I'm not sure why Vila got to me, and so deeply I had to write for him.

INTPs are usually oblivious to external details unless something forces them to take notice.
I'm always acutely aware of faces and expressions, and words used, but I rarely notice anything like clothes. I couldn't tell you what the By lot wore till I started to draw them. I'm aware that others notice this sort of thing though and try to wear different clothes each weekday. :-P

There are some things that don't apply to me--but do to Greg, like needing music. But that's one of the better articles I've read.

I wondered if I was depressed and took a test, but it seems I'm not, because I can get out of that frame of mind by reading or watching TV and taking my mind off it all. I have a suspicion that all introverts are regarded as Not Quite Right by the vast extrovert majority (75%).

[identity profile] thetisonline.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Must admit that I was a dedicated Avon fan when the series was first aired, and he is still the one I most identify with. I've only been a Tarrant fan since the DVDs were released, and that is just a lust-factor thing. It is odd that you chose Vila ... but I have read somewhere that ENFPs are favoured by us, as being our complement.

I really related to the section about being oblivious to detail. I do tend to pick up "atmospherics" rather than the detail of a place when I'm travelling. I also relly related to the messiness described ... I do get domestic blindness after a while.

I am really aware of words rather than expressions and faces. I have noticed that the kids at school take notice of what I'm wearing, and jewellery and things, that I don't give a second thought to.

I'm not a great music lover, but the part about choosing music to reflect my mood rather than to change my mood resonated. I'll often find words from songs that are a perfect description of how I'm feeling, or what I'm thinking float into my consciousness without warning ... often something that I haven't heard for years.

I thought the vast majority of people were introverts ... must check that up.

Interesting, isn't it?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
ENFPs are favoured by us, as being our complement.

Really? That might explain it. Otherwise I'm not sure how Vila fits in with Spock, Data, Seven of Nine, Garak, Stark, Londo, and G'Kar, all androids or aliens. Maybe with the adorable Vir Cotto; though he's an alien too, he has so much in common with Vila (including two letters), and I think he was be based on him--JMS was a B7 fan after all, which is why he named Anna that.

I am really aware of words rather than expressions and faces.

Maybe you're more verbal than me. I'm very visual and will remember a face over a name any day. I do however have a good ear for dialogue and whether it's right. I do make an effort to dress nicely with matching or contrasting jewellery etc (even if I don't notice others' clothes unless they're stunning) but I think that's my artistic side. How things look matter a lot to me. I can be domestically blind too, but my sense of aesthetics kicks in when things get too messy. Or is if we;'re expecting a visitor.

I love music, but mainly orchestral, or without lyrics. I can't even think straight if someone's talking or I can hear a song; others' words interfere with mine. However I love intelligent lyrics that aren't repetitive and "lurve ya behbeh" which is why I enjoy Al Stewart so much.

Nope, the majority are extrovert which is why we're so misunderstood by colleagues and management. Sigh.

It is interesting! Some people really hate the whole idea of MBTI though; it must be our analytical natures,

[identity profile] thetisonline.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
You're right ... the world is ruled by extroverts. But I found this consoling ...

"Over 60% of gifted people are introverted compared with 30% of the general
population. Over 75% of highly gifted people are introverted. (The percentage of
introverts seems to increase with IQ (Silverman).) "
http://www.sidis.net/HighQStacey.htm

"there is a known statistical correlation between introversion, giftedness, PhDs and Phi Beta Kappas. It would seem that the higher you go in education and IQ intelligence, the ratio of introverts to extroverts reverses itself with a majority of Rhodes Scholars being introverts, for example."
http://www.hsc-reading.com/readingskills/

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
This would be fine if I worked in academia. :-P However most jobs seem to require "bubbly" extroverts. Bah.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
*Laughs* Robotic...YOU robotic...hahaha and love you discussion about feelings!
Your beautiful pictures are the best mirror of your personality!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have never been considered robotic! Reserved and geeky and involved in my work, maybe. But OTOH if something interests me--a conversation topic, fooling around being silly, fandoms--then I'm totally into it. There are even been people who think I'm extrovert!

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, being silly is more and more attractive for me - it may be the age :-)
Ha - extrovert? Thud.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because I like acting, telling jokes, and doing accents. But those things are easy because I'm not being me: I'm being someone else.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You? Really? hehe.

What do you think Vila would be?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think he's an ENFP! Most people make him ESFP, but though he's very hedonistic, he's also extremely intuitive. ENFPs are chatty and playful and mischievous, so I think it suits him well.

[identity profile] thetisonline.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think Vila is more an ENFP too.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! This meme seems pretty good. I'd better go now and not bother you with trivial chit chat. :^)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually I enjoy discussion about topics that interest me; that's why I'm on LJ! You guys are my friends! However it's on my terms; I don't have to reply straight away, and I can choose to walk away from an argument. IM though I find rather stressful, esp if it is trivial chitchat. It's like the phone in its immediacy and I find that even harder.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* On LJ you've got plenty of time to ponder and delete. On the phone one wrong inflection--- eeep.

[identity profile] the-summoning-d.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Y helo thar Avon XD
I'm ENTP. So close and yet so far...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that one difference is a big one! I've seen you and me described as Inventor and Architect elsewhere. I like ENTPs. I think they have a lot more fun, and really, my I isn't anywhere near as pronounced as my N.

[identity profile] the-summoning-d.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer 'engineer', but that works too ;) I test as ENFP sometimes as well, and I used to be INTP before some of my louder friends adopted me.
