Gender meme

From [livejournal.com profile] sorsha_khan, a quick survey thingy, basically about gender stereotypes. Because I'm bored and don't want to go to bed because I know I won't be able to sleep.

Of course, this is based on shocking stereotypes, but I suppose it shows how little I conform to them. Actually I believe there are more differences between individuals than between the averaged-out genders, but maybe that's because I tend to know other geeky types.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I appear to score 7 male points and 2 female ones. *is wearing baggy sweatpants and a hoodie right now*

at some point in life you wanted to be a fire-fighter

I didn't, but I got to wield a fire hose once, and it was very cool. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
Only 7? I like sweatshirts, but not with hoods; they annoy me. And which were the female ones--apart from the cats one, anyway?

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:22 am (UTC)(link)

I find a hoodie is ideal for the weather here a lot of the time, as it's often chilly but not cold enough for an actual coat, and windy enough that you want something over your ears. Also, they're comfy.

And which were the female ones--apart from the cats one, anyway?

Cats and chocolate. Two excellent things in life. :)

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
My total scores were very similar to yours (though I wear neither baggy sweatpants nor hoodies).
Incidentally, wouldn't anyone who laughed more than they breathed be dead? :)

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose it's theoretically possible to laugh while inhaling... :)

Does this make me neuter? :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Just a nonconformist to the stereotypes too. :-)

Yay for women who don't like shopping! I hate people assuming that I do.

[identity profile] miss-next.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
I swear I would have gone insane from it now if it weren't for the Internet. The Internet is great. You can find what you want quickly, you don't have to trog round a whole lot of shops, you avoid the crowds and the noise (including the shops' idea of music). I do occasionally make a trip to John Lewis for haberdashery because I know they stand a fair chance of having what I want, but normally the only physical shopping I do these days is the Saturday morning grocery run, and that's only because having groceries delivered from an online order is uneconomic and you can't choose your own substitute if they don't have the specific thing you want.

I've even found a brand of shoes that fits me that I can order online. Oh, how I completely fail to miss shoe shops... :-D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
I order all my clothes on-line, but not shoes as they fit so differently. This probably explains why I own so many Crocs (comfortable and easy fits) and trainers, and a few pairs of ageing other shoes.

I'll put up with grocery shopping only until they drop the delivery fee for shopping on-line. I make up for it by buying a coffee at the cafe in the mall.

I think they missed a whole heap of criteria! But it's all fun.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'd never have guessed! :-)

My favourite colours are green and blue, and I wear a lot of black. I suspect that one of the things that marks me as odd in the work environment is not smiling as much as people expect women to. OTOH I've mainly worked with guys.

[identity profile] thetisonline.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
Now, my secret girliness is out. I'll never live it down.

Sometimes I realise I'm sitting there with a smile plastered to my face ... and there's no-one around. It's like a default. :(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I know one woman who smiles constantly--really, all the time--but she stands out (to me anyway). I sometimes wonder if she trained herself to.

[identity profile] thetisonline.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
At least I (rightly) hate shopping!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to! I just hate people assuming I love it because I'm female.

[identity profile] azdak.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I score zero on the girl side. What kind of women does the person who made this quiz know?????
kerravonsen: Samantha Carter: Astrogeek (Astrogeek)

[personal profile] kerravonsen 2009-02-01 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously someone has to make a better quiz.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't like chocolate? You do have a heart in your icon, and those make me gag. ;-)

It's full of stereotypes. If they'd put "you love horses" in there, you'd have scored, and that's something people often assume about women. Ponies, anyway. I've never seen the attraction, myself.

[identity profile] azdak.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You do have a heart in your icon

Ah, but that's a Jacobite silver button, so I supect the heart stands for love of Scotland.

You don't like chocolate?

Chocolate's okay, in a take-it-or-leave-it sort of way. I don't dislike it, but I only ever buy it as presents for other people.

If they'd put "you love horses" in there, you'd have scored, and that's something people often assume about women.

Oh, absolutely. And I adore babies, and I'm quite soppy about small children, and I cry at sad films (which is why I don't like watching sad films) and I hate conflict, all of which are also conventionally female characteristics. But that quiz was all about make-up and nail varnish and how many pairs of shoes you own. It was femininity as defined by a drag queen, if you ask me.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Or a teenager from a US high school; most come from them. I had to correct the punctuation and grammar.

Babies bore me, but once children have reached the age when I can tell them stories, I find them interesting. I completely lack any maternal instinct I avoid sad films and books.

Perhaps I should write a proper meme, but my own prejudices might show.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm less of a girl than you.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my make up and jewellery skews it a bit. But it's with jeans and cargoes and shirts or sweaters. I bet you wear skirts though; it's been years since I did.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently it's feminine to repeat yourself in memes.

I score 75% male, 25% female. (12 and 4)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't often do them, actually; those long teenaged American survey things bore me silly.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I mean under the Girl attributes the author repeats the ones about shopping and pink. I should have explained myself.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I should have replaced one with "you love horses and ponies", another one that doesn't apply to me.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't necessarily mean anything either, since a lot of the guys I know own horses and ponies (cavalry reenactors--you can't get much more he-man than that, at least in their minds).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! I did think of that, how it was men who loved horses in the west and the past when they were the cars of the day. I just happen to know a lot of women who are crazy about horses--and don't even own one. There's a pony club down the road though, and I have yet to see a boy riding one. I wonder why, because it's the boys who do the rodeo stuff at country shows (though I once had a go in the kids' section and came off very quickly).

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Because people are silly when it comes to gender differences.

I live right smack in the middle of horse country, here. Everybody, his brother, sister, mother, father, aunt, uncle and second cousin twice removed has horses, and a good many of that number own horse farms.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Girls on ponies is probably an urban thing. Men certainly do a lot of riding in the country here. My grandfather and his sisters even used to ride to school.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
We have photos of the Cavalry Reenactors riding their horses through the Drive-Thru at KFC.

A lot of times guys are better at handling horses just because they're bigger and can use their weight to their advantage. Horse whispering just ain't how it's done.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
How cool! I'm a Roman re-enactor myself, but not cavalry. :-) I've ridden horses as a kid on friends' farms; it just isn't something I really got into.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder...male:10, female:4. Well, I used to be called a tomboy...:-)

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
YES!!!!!:-)

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
As I know an awful lot of cat liking men and dog loving women that is so not a stereotype that flies for me. It's not whether you are a boy or a girl but whether you want companions that are independent or whether you want slavish devotion.

What is it with women and shoes? The only item of clothing I seem to have a thing for is jackets and waistcoats. Shoes are just there as far as I'm concerned.
As for black vs pink its blue for boys, not black. Mind you there is scientific evidence for the preference for both colours
Why girls prefer pink
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/press.office/press.release/item/?ref=1187625608

I've always hated the colour and the only shopping I enjoy is not usually for clothes but for other things like books etc, which presumably satisfies my hunter gatherer instincts.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't write it!

I agree about the dogs and cats, but they're all stereotypes. I've noticed authors seem to go in for cats.

Yeah, I don't get the shoe thing. I don't own any high-heels, but I do have a few of those plastic Crocs, also trainers, and the rest are old and comfortable flats. With me, it's hats. I'd love them to become more accepted.

I don't mind pink as a colour, but I never wear it. It gets a bad rap though from that disgusting baby pink, and baby blue is just as horrible.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I didn't mean it to sound like I'm shooting the memer.

I've noticed the author - cat connection too.

I've got some plastic Croc clones, my work shoes one pair of trainers and that's it. I've never had high heels too - I can't walk in them and don't see why I should.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to buy high heels some years ago for my sister's wedding (I was the bridesmaid) and threw them out a while back as I never wore them again. I hate high heels. I'm sure that's why people think I'm shorter than average when I am in fact exactly average.

My shoes comprise about 5 pairs of Crocs, two jandals (flip-flops?) three trainers, 3 or 4 summer sandals, 3 or 4 slip-on or lace-up winter shoes. And some hiking boots. I haven't bought any shoes but for Crocs for about 3 years.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a Croc convert too, if they ever do a safety shoe version I'm buying them, just so I can wear them at work.

[identity profile] merrymaia.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't identify with almost anything on either list.

-I love both cats and dogs (I love all animals) - but I love cats more.
-While I don't "love" jeans, I do like them, and wear them a lot.
-I like hoodies too.
-I go to both my parents for advice.
-Green has been my favorite color since I was 2 years old.
-I like chocolate.

But other than that - I don't identify with anything on either list.

But that's always been true of me: I don't identify with either
stereotypically-female OR stereotypically-male behaviors and traits.

When I was a child, I felt so alienated from both boy-groups and girl-groups. Boy-groups were always roughhousing and I hated that - but girl-groups were always giggling and I hated that just as much.

Boys would kill spiders (and the cruelty of that horrified and devastated and infuriated me)
- girls would shriek over spiders (and the stupidity of that infuriated me)
- and no one seemed to be like me, who LIKED spiders.

My idea of a good time was to sit watching a spider weave its web, or play very gently with a snake.

I hated sports and also hated clothes. I hated loud and noisy and boorish behavior, but I hated gossip too.

As an adult, I have the same problem.

I hate sports and video-games - but I also hate fashion and shopping.

I never wear high-heeled shoes (and don't understand why anyone in their right might WOULD wear them - they're instruments of torture as far as I'm concerned) and I never wear make-up. And the smell of perfume makes me ill.

I don't feel either female or male. But I don't feel both, either. I feel neither.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I like spiders too, though the amount of webs around here drives me nuts. I always wanted a snake as a pet, but there aren't any here. I did have pythons draped over me in Malaysia, and hundreds of little snakes at the Snake Temple. :-) It was surprising how many men were appalled.

High heels are stupid, and I've been nauseous from perfume sprayed on me in a store before I could say no.

I do like my make up and necklaces though. I don't fit the patterns either.

There's only one kind of shopping I like and that's craft markets. Since the one I liked has closed, that's it for me. :-(

I do stand out, even among other females here, for wearing make up. It's the artistic side of me, I think; I know I can make myself look better, so I do.

Wow, I'm one of the "girliest" people here! Pretty weird, considering that I was a tomboy when I was young, then turned androgynous (people used to think I was a boy and/or a lesbian when I was in high school/early college). I guess it shows I've loosened up a bit in my anti-girlishness rigors. I'm definitely not a girly-girl, though.

I actually like bright pink (and it does look good with orange) but I don't wear either colour as they don't look good with me. Baby pink (and blue) though: ghastly! I go for turquoise, green, blue, purple: what I call stained glass colours. A rich, bright pink would look good with those; pity.
