Amazing dreams of a white Christmas

I didn't realise that the SF mag Amazing still existed. After buying several from the 50s at the local pawn shop (along with a lot of others of the same vintage) I went back today to see if they had anything else in. I found two modern Amazings from 1999 and 2000, and they look pretty good too, packed with good stories and reviews of SF novels. One has a cover featuring a lovely painting of Lyta and G'Kar which matches a story about them by JMS; among the others, there's also a Heechee novella by Frederik Pohl. The other has Captain Proton on the cover and a story about him; how geeky is that--a story about a fictional character's favourite fictional character?. One of the other stories is a Harry Harrison alternate history. Pretty good reading for $5 each.

And here's a different look at a White Christmas that a friend sent me. Vila would approve.

White Christmas

In fact I've already started. Cheers, Avon!

*sigh* One of us ought to stay sober. *Lifts glass of vitamin solution in salute* Cheers, Vila.

Love the picture, lol. I know that 'Amazing' was cancelled a few years ago for a while, then it started up again and you could even find it in a few shops here (now that is amazing!). However, I haven't seen it for a while now...hmmm...

Well, the two I have are over 5 years old so I suppose that's no guarantee it still exists. I was quite impressed with the quality though.

That's very Vila! Tell Avon to go easy; in my fanon he's got no head for it.

It's all right; he's on vitamin solution (see above).

Yep, that's a Restal Family Saying all right :)

Cheers, mate!

I'd have thought red would be more festive...?

It certainly is in winter. White seems more popular here in summer and I've been given a couple of bottles of champers. It's certainly more refreshing in the heat and I like rosé too; it has a bad rep it's just shaking off. However if the weather's like today (cool, windy, wet), a good robust red'll do the trick!

Yeah, the later Amazings got into licenced fiction (aka profesional fanfic *grin*) and it was stunning stuff.

And yes, A very red and white christmas to Vila! Cheers!!

Cheersh to you too!

I shall certainly keep an eye out for more Amazings. I had quite a friendly chat with the Russian who runs it so I can probably get him to keep me any.

I'm a "red" man myself. :)

Interesting that Pohl and Harrison should feature in the 1999/2000 Amazing issues, as they could well have featured in the 1950s issues. They are two of the SF authors with exceptional longevity, along with Bradbury and Clarke. I'd like to think that they are still going strong, since I don't think that I've seen an obituary for either of them.

I was quite surprised to see their names. I have a lot of good reading for the holidays, including one of the few Hal Clements available in the library system.

I think Vila's with you on the red. He certainly favoured it on Xenon base.
