Lost!

Well, I've seen the first ep of Lost. It was very good, though I was a bit worried it was going to be horror rather than SF till near the end. Horror I don't go for.

Firstly, I think some outside agent is responsible for their crash, and their survival. Planes don't break up in mid-air like that, and they certainly don't end up in large and relatively intact chunks on a convenient island with 40-odd of the passengers almost unhurt. The pilot said his radio was out well before the crash, so it looks like a planned event. Also, Jack would not have survived a fall through those trees. He was put there. Charlie straps himself into a first-class seat but he's on the beach with the others instead of dead in the front section. Were certain passengers chosen to survive?

Another question: why didn't the pilot either continue on his course or return to Australia? Diverting to Fiji seems an odd choice if he was out of contact, but hey, maybe it's standard procedure to go to the nearest airport.

Jack has a thing about the number 5. He talks about the 5 seconds it took to conquer his fear as a surgeon, and he has a tat with a 5 and what look like 5 seconds marked out in an arc under it. I'm not sure what the rest of the picture is. A coiled snake?

That thing that's big enough to knock down palm trees in its path either hasn't been there very long, or it's a mistake: there wouldn't be much jungle still standing if it had.

When Kate took the handcuffs off, she left them unlocked. They're found locked.

Sayid said the batteries in the transceiver would last only a few hours. They hear a looping message with an incremental count that has been transmitting for 16 years. Either it's using some other power source, plus the count must be computer-generated, or it was created that day just for them to hear.

And then there's the polar bear.

And the title sequence which reminds me of things floating in space.

I am intrigued.

Oooh, yay! It gets much better as you get to know the characters (although Kate and Jack remain forever bland) and the mysteries just keep on coming. Don't expect much resolution any time soon.

I can't believe the UK isn't getting it till July. *rages a bit*

I know almost nothing about this show, beyond the content of the first episode, so this is all speculation.

Charlie straps himself into a first-class seat but he's on the beach with the others instead of dead in the front section.

I wrote that off as a plot hole. But I'm expecting future events to prove me wrong ;)

When Kate took the handcuffs off, she left them unlocked. They're found locked.

We noticed that. But I think we only got a brief glimpse of them lying on the ground, and they may have just looked like they were closed. I think (I don't have extensive experience of handcuffs, ahem) that if you close them, but they're not around something, you can just push the swingy bit all the way back through. Otherwise, a prop-hand goofed, or future events may prove me wrong.

Do you think that Kate really doesn't know how to unload a gun, or was that an act to divert the others' attention from the possibility that she was the criminal? Not that any fingers were pointing at her, yet, but maybe she thought that proficiency with firearms would draw attention to her.

Either it's using some other power source...,

Very likely, as it's coming from another transmitter nearby. I'd pick solar-power if I were writing the script. Except I don't know how good a solar panel made sixteen years ago would be, and if it would have lasted this long. Hmm.

My first thought when they identified the transmission was that they should try and find the other transmitter and use that for their distress call.

...the count must be computer-generated...

Definitely.

...or it was created that day just for them to hear.

Also a very real possibility!

So far, the show feels to me like an extended episode of The Twilight Zone.

I think they took such care with the intersecting shots of Charlie and Jack on the plane that they must have meant it. They also rubbed it in with the bimbo crying because not being allowed into first class saved her. I'm just trying to note all the things that may have significance later. I've been told that you gradually come to fit things together as you learn more. My theory right now is that they were chosen to survive (perhaps even manipulated to get on the plane in the first place) and they're no longer on earth. Tractor beams to an artificial zoo-type environment perhaps?

I think (I don't have extensive experience of handcuffs, ahem) that if you close them, but they're not around something, you can just push the swingy bit all the way back through.

Greg (who knows all sorts of weird things from his non-fic reading like Oceanic being the 555 of airlines) says you can just swing a locked pair around and they'll open. Still, that would explain why they're open after being left locked, not vice versa.

Do you think that Kate really doesn't know how to unload a gun

Hey, that's a good thought. I don't think anyone's what they seem (perhaps why they were selected?) esp the heroic and altruistic Jack. I think he's driven to help, perhaps by guilt and the need to make up for past deeds?

We're both looking forward to the next ep. If I hadn't heard about the show here, I probably wouldn't have watched it. I don't go for disaster, horror, or survival stuff, but I'm enjoying it. Objections are: did you need a dog for me to worry about, and why the hell does there always have to be a pregnant woman? I also didn't think airlines let them on that late.

And hey, if we're both watching it, we can discuss it each week! Cool!

We certainly plan to keep watching it, and it will be great to have someone to discuss it with! I'm really trying not to get spoiled.

I'm also trying not to draw firm conclusions about plot and characters yet, as we're only in the set-up stage.

Yeah, we didn't like the presence of the dog. Or the kid - usually foreshadows trouble, usually involving death or serious injury to some altruistic adult. Or the kid+dog combination - even more opportunities for trouble. Or the pregnant woman - yeah, I thought eight months was way too late!

Oh, hey, I'm just having fun speculating; I haven't made my mind up about anything except that I loath the Korean guy or whatever he is and hope the monster fancies a bit of Asian food. I suppose he'll turn out to be not as horrible as he seems and the woman with him not as innocent and downtrodden as she looks. I hope so anyway. My favourite after one ep is Hurley.

I've avoided spoilers for it and the other new shows too, so I know nothing but what I've seen and someone's comment that all the pieces start to fit together as you see more. I hate spoilers so much I FF through the 'next week' trailers for shows that they've taken to showing at the end of the current ep, as they did with this, grrr. Look guys, I don't want to know till I've seen it; and I don't need appetisers to make me watch next week. That annoys me almost as much as the bastard they pay to talk over the credits of each program and ruin the music someone went to trouble to choose. Stab.

Yeah, I'm just speculating, too :) And I hate spoily ads and spoily blurbs in listings.

We occasionally see a groups of the BoT's friends, and one of them just loves spoilers. She gave away some of B5 when we were first watching it, which got her a (polite) telling-off, and she frequently needs reminding. They're probably watching Lost as well, so we'll probably need to monitor where the conversation goes if it comes up.

And the yakyak over end credits is another big peeve of mine. And shrinking them to illegiblity so they can use them as free ad time. Do these people not understand that the credits are part of the show? Just shush and let me ease out, okay!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-02-05 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. If I want to read the credits I now hit the mute button. And I've so far avoided most spoilers except for a PKW one about Sikozu which is colouring how I see her now. Don't tell me any more--I'm still in S4 and falling behind what with good programs coming on TV at last.

I see in the Listener that 'Deadwood' (was it you who mentioned it?) starts on Prime on Monday 14 Feb at 9:45pm (I don't really fancy a misogynist Western though) and 'Green Wing' on Friday 18 Feb at 9:40 on One. I'm looking forward to that (Tamsin Greig and weirdness!). I hope those times are right; I got Greg to yell them downstairs. He's taken the Listener upstairs to read.

I'm trying to be careful about Farscape - fortunately I don't have a lot to say at the moment!

Deadwood isn't a misogynist show, per se. It's partly that life is hard, and unscrupulous people will do anything to stay in a comfortable situation, and mainly that Ian McShane's character is physically and verbally abusive to anyone he thinks he can push around. Some of his scenes with one particular character really made me wince. Also, many of the female characters on the show are prostitutes, and they're pretty low status. I suppose the situation is about what one would expect in a lawless frontier town of the period, but that doesn't excuse it. Anyway, it's a large cast, with lots of plot threads going on at once, so it isn't all about how nasty Al Swearengen is. Brad Dourif plays a cool doctor, and William Sanderson is also in it.

I'm looking forward to Green Wing - it was on in the UK, and many of my friends liked it, but we never picked it up for some reason. Cold Case is also starting up on One that week - we saw a series of that in the UK and enjoyed it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-02-05 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I noticed 'Cold Case' is coming on. I may watch, I don't know; 'Silent Witness' often got too graphic for me. Hey, the morgue scenes in 'Six Feet under' did too.

[personal profile] trixieleitz 2005-02-05 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't find Cold Case terribly graphic (YMMV). CSI is much more so, especially in the later series.

I thought Six Feet Under looked good when it was first advertised. For some reason we never started watching it, and I'm loathe to pick it up halfway.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-02-05 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's a pity as it's a very good series. It would be hard to pick up now without all the character history. Another one I liked was 'Teachers' even though I missed the first couple of eps.

Eep. All these new shows after such a long draught and I have a pile of DVDs probably as tall as me to watch too. I haven't even seen Farscape S4 for a week. There are also films I want to see.

I've just seen that the BSG miniseries is coming on 3 next Saturday. The series must be on soon; one of my friends said so.

In the UK, the BSG series followed straight on from the miniseries. But there's no accounting for broadcasters....
