Who walks into a bar?

I took so long to think up anything, anything at all, to write for my last [community profile] trope_bingo entry that I missed the deadline by a couple of hours. Oh well, I wasn't thinking of asking for another bingo card anyway as I've already written so many of the tropes that appealed.

I'm going to sign up again for [community profile] intoabar / [livejournal.com profile] intoabar (even though it isn't spring 2013 here, dammit) but here's the thing: who walks into the bar? I've twice picked Vila since bars feature among his favourite places, and he's so easy to write interacting with the random character picked for him to meet (so far Acastus Kolya and Aeryn Sun).

But should it be someone else this time? I've considered a few other characters I'm not as confident about writing, and there are different sorts of bars they could walk into if they're not that keen on the ones serving alcohol.

Suggestions are welcome; often they can spark off some sort of inspiration, even if at a tangent. If not, I'll release Vila into the cross-fandom bizarreness again.

Travis -I think there are times when he definitely needs a drink.

*huggles Vila* I've just met Vila (starting to watch B7 for the first time, yay!) and I am very happy to read about him even though I hardly know him yet. I have also met Blake, Jenna, and some people who got killed. Soon I'll be able to read B7 fic and know what's going on, exciting!!

Anyway, write about whoever you like and I'll look forward to it :)

Oh, a currently running rewatch? I wish I'd jumped in a little earlier! It was several fics turning up in a row on my reading page, none of which I could fully appreciate, that made me decide to finally start watching.

I am intending to share my reactions. I've seen two episodes and finished a post about the first one tonight. Vila appears very endearing in the first and even better in the second - I loved him dropping the gun!

no bars held

A lawyer walks into the bar . . .

A ballerina walks into a barre . . .

A trapeze artist . . .

A Martian warrior from Barsoom . . .

A dog walks into a bark . . .

Bartholomew (from Dr. Seuss) . . .

The vicar of Barchester . . .

Bartleby the Scrivener . . .

(time for me to go to bed!!)

Ha! Ziva David walks into a bar mitzvah.
Jack Aubrey sails into a sandbar.
The Barmy Army lurch into a bar...

[thinks about SG1 and SGA] I could do Rodney McKay. He's always fun.

Jack Aubrey sails into a sandbar.

Whoops! And whoops of laughter!

And there are, as mentioned, chocolate bars. Mmm.

'into a bar mitzvah' is a joke so brilliant it deserves a fic, surely.

also - i agree vila is a good choice :) but i also offer soolin.

I'm unlikely to get a random character who'd go to a bar mitzvah, but I'll keep it in mind! Perhaps I could use Ivanova.

Soolin would be good. Hmm, now I'm thinking about reviving Jenna Stannis PI. Would that be too strange though?

I also considered Miranda because she'd be so funny first-person but then thought not enough people would know her. Sadly.

It's very hard to decide, isn't it? I changed my mind about ten times.

Violet Crawley could walk into a bar tea shop? ;-)

Not that there's anything wrong with Vila walking into a bar. (Vila! ♥) Well, unless he's supposed to be somewhere else, of course, which he probably is...

I do adore Violet! [thinks about it] Did you read the Downton Abbey/Sherlock/DW crossover I once perpetrated?

I really do need a Violet icon.

I'm glad there are still people who'd read a Vila story though.

I did read your crossover - I think I was cheering you along somewhere early in the process, too. :-)

I had a Violet icon, once. I should get my Downton one back, really. And of course there are always people who'll read Vila-fic!

I have not stopped loving Vila! And now that I've finally seen Downton Abbey -- where do I find this crossover of yours? Must read!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-05-04 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad. I certainly haven't.

It's on AO3, here (http://archiveofourown.org/works/428023).

There are coffee bars and milk bars (and Milky Bars) for the non-drinker.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-05-04 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly, and hamburger bars. I plan to use the sort of bar that will match my character though, as suggested below, it might be funnier not to.

The fictional (and perhaps comedic) potential is even greater if circumstances impel someone into an establishment ze does not normally frequent--so Violet in a workingman's pub could be comedy GOLD. (Or tragedy gold.)

Personally, I was going to sign up with my darlingest Simon, but a simple shift to my other darling Nolan Ross gave me lots of ideas when I felt that I would run (heh) into a brick wall. Which is not a statement that there are not many more stories about Vila to be told and many happy readers for them.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-05-04 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
An excellent point! (And I really must acquire a Violet icon.)

I had to look up Nolan Ross. I'm not sure that I'm ready for another fandom at this point but that does sound interesting.

It's hard to connect anything that happens on Revenge with anything that might, under any circumstances, actually happen, but I think it's high-grade silly nonsense and continue to be astonished that it isn't a big fandom. I'm really enjoying S2, but the conventional wisdom is that quality fell off after S1.

Death walks into a bar,,,, (Terry Pratchett's)

Vimes would walk into a bar too, but he'd cause less of a stir.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-05-04 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
They both rock and I love them both, but I'm uncertain of my ability to write them well. I have read some brilliant Death fanfic.
