Damn good show!

Well done, GB! I was very impressed with the Olympics opening ceremony with its green idyllic land replaced by dark satanic mills (and matching dark satanic capitalists), Mr Bond and the Queen, Mr Bean and his Chariots of Fire dream, and that wonderful run down the Thames complete with Ratty, Mole, and Toad and a flying pig over Battersea Power Station, EastEnders (and probably lots of other references I missed).

The copper bowls for each team making up the Olympic cauldron was genius.

I have to say though, [livejournal.com profile] sallymn is right: far too many teams dress like flight attendants in boring blazers and ties or scarves, and what were the US team thinking with their little 50s air hostess hats? I do love seeing the smaller nations in their bright national dress but there wasn't much sartorial interest otherwise.

Anyway, well done, London!

Oh, and it's Jasmin's 4th birthday today which makes it much better than the opening day of the last summer Olympics on which our Tessa died. There was tuna for all three to their great pleasure.

Happy birthday, Jasmine!

I thought the US berets were dreadful. Much too martial-looking. I was relieved to see the NZ team didn't wear their formal uniform for the march-in, as it would have been just one more set of air hostesses to add to the collection. The German pink/blue colour coding made me grumpy.

Did you spot the Czech team's wellies? Hilarious! I liked the Ukrainian women's '70s inspired smocks, although they were apparently designed and made in Russia, which did not go down well.

I thoroughly enjoyed it all. I really enjoyed the music section but it was a little too long imo. The Industrial Revolution was incredible.

Some of the teams were dressed in very boring attire weren't they? Like you I love seeing the smaller nations who very often wear something bright and original. Thank you for not mentioning our awful Elvis outfits ;)

Awww, Happy Birthday to Jasmin!

Hmm, and 'flight attendants' was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the Australian Team; and Ansett Airlines flight attendants, at that.

I liked the Volleys, and, not that you can see it, but the lining of the blazers had all the names of previous Olympics and Australian Gold medalists.

There was so much to love in the opening ceremony however, it made up for the disappointment at seeing those uniforms.

Dunlop Volleys. On their feet. :D

I agree with everything you said about the opening ceremony, it was magnificent. We do some things very well in the UK and ceremony is one of them, what really amazes me is that not one iota of detail about what it was going to be got out before hand.
And it is the first Olympics ever that had women in every team

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
I was surprised that so many Muslim teams had women, but every one? That's very cool and so encouraging.

Happy Birthday, little Jasmin--a much more important festivity than the opening of the Olympics.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
There was tuna and of course many cuddles. I was going to get a photo of her ignoring the Olympics but she jumped down when she saw the camera.

Is she shy or just contrary?

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I love that! It's probably one of the reasons I am so enamored of all things feline.

Happy birthday to Jasmin.

I thought that the opening ceremony was very well done. I have to admit that Mr Bean was the highlight for me. It was also good to see Sir Tim Berners-Lee given a leading role. I missed the parade of the teams, as it was after my bedtime. The ceremony didn't begin till 9pm local time, because understandably Danny Boyle thought that it would be more impressive after dark, and it wasn't due to finish till 12:30am.

I think it was about quarter to one by the time Sir Paul turned up to sing "And, in the end..." (though it wasn't the end, because he went on to conduct a singalong "Hey Jude".

Sorry you missed the bit with the torches, because that was very spectacular, but I'm sure it will be repeated.

I made a big mistake in switching off just before the tribute to the victims of 7/7, with Emeli Sande singing "Abide With Me". I wouldn't have done that if I'd known that she would be singing, as she has an amazing voice and that is my favourite hymn (it's almost enough to convert me from athewism to Christianity). Fortunately I managed to track it down online, at deadspin.com - both her performance and the accompanying dancers were remarkable.

(I understand that American viewers didn't get to see her performance, as NBC cut away to an interview with someone or other.)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
It was good seeing Sir Tim! I should have mentioned him too; he must have been so chuffed at his reception.

And ha! For once our timezone was an advantage!

I had a great time watching too, I loved all the movie references and the music in the digital era salute! And the National Health Service, I mean it doesn't get better :)
Unfortunately here in the US everything was interrupted by ads every five minutes, and we also had to endure the clueless commentary of the NBC celebrity hosts who didn't seem to get it.

And happy birthday Jasmine, a happy event all around!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
We had ads too, but not as many (and we usually record ahead on the TiVo so we can zap them). I'm sure I missed a lot of references even though we went back and watched the river tour again.

Jasmin loved her tuna and all the extra cuddles (not that she doesn't get a lot anyway). I think she's still asleep wrapped up in our duvet since this afternoon. She does like her comfort. :-)

Happy birthday to puss!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Jasmin thanks you! She had a lovely day of tuna, extra cuddles, and sunshine (which is more than I can say of the miserable weather we're getting today). Right now she's fast asleep wrapped in our duvet. :-)

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2012-07-28 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy birthday, Jasmin! Mrrr!
And yes, the ceremony was really excellent, very clever and witty and touching too. Of course the Queen and her Bond were a brilliant surprise:-)
In the meantime, our team are not doing well...I do hope it will get better.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2012-07-28 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
But your team has lovely blue wellies to cope with the rain.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
Jasmin thanks you and Tygr!

It was a great surprise!

We're doing well in the rowing (we usually do) but so far no finals. As for swimming and other sports, we do well just to show up.

Were your team's gumboots made be Bata? :-)

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2012-07-28 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It worked a lot better than I expected, and Boyle was right not to try competing against the big set pieces of Beijing. I loved the way they formed the cauldron from the individual petals that had come in with each nation. And I loved this story (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-19027569) which I read today.

(and matching dark satanic capitalists),

Who were Isembard Kingdom Brunel according to part of our commentary.

little 50s air hostess hats

The commentator referred to them as berets, so I assumed they were being military.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
I thought only Branagh was Brunel (whom I admire greatly BTW). The others seemed so arrogant and approving of the factories, I figured they had to be capitalist bosses.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2012-07-28 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy Birthday Jasmin!

Ah, I thought air stewardesses, too.

The American berets made it more like a military uniform.

As for Team GB - Bring on the Chavs in white and gold Hoodies!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
Bwahahaha, chavs! Hey, they were more inventive than most!
