Slightly poorly Vic

Vic hasn't been eating his evening treat of soft food for the last few days, but I wasn't that worried till I saw him doing that weird mouth-opening and licking thing Claudia did when she had sore teeth, so we took him to the vet today. He needs a scale, but that's not the problem; he has a sore throat! I didn't know cats got sore throats. So he got a painkiller and an antibiotic injection, and some liquid antibiotic for the next week. We also bought him some extra-soft food and he seems a lot more keen on that, though he's been eating his Hill's dry food. Not that he couldn't stand to lose a little weight anyway; he's a prosperous-looking cat, as a friend would say.

Aw, poor baby. How fortunate you were on the watch and got him the right treatment promptly.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Greg thinks he has a temperature too; his ears are hotter than usual. Apart from not eating and doing the mouth thing once, he's seemed very much his normal self. He looks a bit tired tonight though; probably the antibiotic. He's a strong fellow; he'll be fine. :-)

*huggles Vic* Poor thing. *offers tuna flavoured strepsils*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
He'll be fine. He ate up his extra-soft food and he has a lovely warm bed (a basket with my old sleeping bag over a pet electric blanket) to sleep in. :-)

Poo kitty, but I'm glad he's going to get better :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just an infection. I hope the girls don't get it too.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
Get well soon Vic, you have to keep those young lionesses in order.%)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
He's become more playful since they came! Tessa was nervous of him and didn't like being chased, and Claudia kept him firmly in his place.

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, love a Vic. Hope he's all well soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure he will be. He's just had a good breakfast.

[personal profile] kernezelda 2009-10-17 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
Poor Vic! Duchess just had her own visit to the vet yesterday for sneezing and sniffling. I knew cats could get colds, because she had one last year, but I didn't realize that cats and humans could pass upper respiratory infections back and forth. The vet told me that since I had a cold, Duchess might well have caught it from me. Or, me from her! She's on anti-biotics, too.

Hopefully, they will both convalesce fully.

*pats Vic*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Claudia had a cold when she was about 6 months old--lots of sneezing and sniffling and clogged-up purring, but none of them have had one since. I don't know how Vic caught it. None of us here have anything. He spends a lot of time in the garden and inside, not wandering much, in the daytime anyway.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor kitty! I don't blame him. I hate eating when I have a sore throat, too.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He's liking the really soft stuff better. I've been giving them food with real recognisable bits of meat and they love it, but it needs to be chewed and I suspect he doesn't.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Here, Vic, Tygr is sending his Mrrrrrr to you!
I hope Vic will get well soon!
*Hugs*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, Tygr! I think those two would get on well. :-)

I love that icon!

Hugs to you too, and I hope the weather and George are improving.

*huggles to Vic* He is fortunate to have you to look after him.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
He is! He was such a wild and starving young stray when we found him, too afraid even to eat in the carport if he could see us through a window. Since then he's tamed right down, and learned to purr and play and curl up on our laps. It took him two or three years to get to that stage, but it really began when he got an abscessed paw and allowed us to catch him.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw poor Vic. Hope he gets better soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure he will. He's strong and healthy and has good antibiotics I've used before on cats.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor thing! You did well to spot it: cats are *so* bad at telling us that something is wrong.... I'm glad you were able to take him in, and I hope that the antibiotics will do the trick soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure they will. The vet didn't seem to think it was too bad, and Vic wanted to eat. He's had two good meals of really soft food since then, and his first dose of antibiotic from us.

He's being well looked after. :-) [hugs back]

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, poor Vic! Give his poor throat a kiss from me.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
:-) He's getting lots of attention here--and round the world.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never had a cat with a sore throat - poor fella. Give him a scritch from me.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't either, but perhaps Claudia did once since she did that odd mouth thing too; she might have got hers from the infected teeth she had out.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, poor baby. Hope he feels better soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think he does already. :-) He's had two good meals since.

Aww poor Vic.
Hope he gets better soon.
We ended up using a hand blender on cat food when Kitsune had a sore mouth. She couldn't eat solids but that went down a treat.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I blended tuna (her favourite) with water that way for Tessa after she had a tooth out. Vic seems to be liking the food we got him, and after a week he can go back to the ones with real bit of meat in them.

[identity profile] merrymaia.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, poor Vic! I hope he feels better soon!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
He's curled up asleep on the couch and he ate quite well so I think he'll recover very well.

I'm glad Vic let you know something wasn't right, and I hope the new food and the meds have him back to his old self soon :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-18 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure they will. He's a tough lad. He's been eating better and is having a good sleep.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2009-10-18 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
poor Vic, I hope he is feeling much better now. I didn't know they could get sore throats either!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-18 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
He's fine. He's being a furry bastard about letting us get a squirt of antibiotic down him though.
