Garage sale haul, and cat photos
I didn't post about the annual "garage sale" in a local church hall. I didn't get anything terribly exciting, the biggest purchase being one of my canvas tote bags packed with books for $20. These included several Stanislaw Lems, some early Flashmans, which I'll read again, and assorted other stuff like a guy's description of hitch-hiking round Ireland with a small fridge and some weird stuff Greg chose, like an Austrian professor's opinion of England written in the 1930s.
Oh yes, and two ancient Jerrard Tickel books because Greg was amused at the title of one, Villa Mimosa. The other one's Appointment with Venus which I remember reading when I was about 13 and thinking it was both funny and exciting (kidnapping a pregnant cow in the wartime Channel Islands) but which turned out to be more serious than I remembered--and a lot more sexist and racist.
Apart from that, I got a green and blue "looking" cat which was displayed uncomfortably perched on its ends instead of over the edge of a shelf, a hand-painted Italian plate for 50 cents, and a yummy crepe with brown sugar and lemon, a welcome addition to the usual sausage sizzles they have at these things and which I avoid.
The cat is outside on a deck railing where it can keep the terracotta ones company that we found here in the garden when we moved in.
A few days ago I saw Vic sitting right by it, but when I got the camera out, he came towards me and sat on the end. Not a good photo as it was taken through a window on a cold and miserable day. The terracotta cat and kittens are out of shot to the right.
And this is the plate. I don't really need another serving one, but I loved the happy spring colours. Not bad for 50 cents!
And here are the "lion and tiger cubs" in a snuggler. They're really too big to fit in there together now; they have to layer. :-)

Amazingly good cats you have there. If I had a terra cotta cat and potted plants on my deck they'd be destroyed by kitties. :)

I have several small wooden Thai "looking" cats inside (it's a fairly common style) plus a couple of cats that lie on a shelf with their paws and tail dangling over. This particular cat is heavy and quite roughly made, but I loved the colours and the hand-scratched "fur" and it looks great outside. :-)

They are so cute. They keep me in bed in the mornings, snuggling up to me and purring. :-P

And your haul is pretty good - the books I see at garage sales are... {shudder}

It took a while to browse the collection; lots of stuff that didn't appeal at all, then you come across a clump of books by one author that someone is chucking out en masse, like the Falco ones last year. :-)

Based on your description of the books that you got, I beg to differ. :)
Though I'm not really a cat person, yours - both real and teracotta - are undeniably cute.

They are very cute! The looking cat is made of something else though. The terracotta cat and kittens aren't as pretty, but we found them on our first day here so it was like a welcome.
Are you a dog person then?

I haven't read the fridge hitchhiker's book, but my grandad told me about it very excitedly a while ago. It's a very entertaining concept, anyway!

That was a good haul, both for the books and the other things, too. That's a good place for the 'looking' cat! "Can I fit in that space in the corner? Let's try!"

I put the looking cat in the corner of the railing for extra security, though it's quite heavy and I don't think our guys could move it. It does look a bit like Jasmin before she leaps into a space too small for her. :-)

Nice haul of books and that is a cheery plate. Not bad for 50 cents.
That yummy crepe with brown sugar and lemon sounds delicious. I love crepes.

I adore crepes! They made them in the street when I was in Germany and I used to buy them a lot in various flavours: Grand Marnier, sugar and lemon, walnut spread... Mmmmmm.

We have flea markets too, and there's a big one in south Auckland. There was also a craft market in the city that's been closed down to my sorrow; that's the only sort of shopping I like. But no, at those markets, people have a stall each where they sell their own stuff. A proper garage sale is where a houssehold sells from their garage,, so the one I went to has the wrong name. I am a pedant and it annoys me as it was held in a church hall, not a garage. They used to be called church or school fairs, but that term seems to have fallen out of fashion. Anyway, lots of people donate stuff they don't want, and it's all sold for the charity running it.
There's a huge book fair like that soon, but I find it almost frightening to go to: a large hall full of books, but even really sorted into any order, so it's pure luck if I find something good--which I have in the past--but five books from such a huge fair isn't really a good haul.
