Day 24 - Art Deco Dayna and Soolin

Today's [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo drawing is another Art Deco Blake's 7 one.

Art Deco Dayna and Soolin

They're checking out Dayna's latest remote-controlled bomb. :-) I didn't have much choice of costumes for poor Soolin, and though Dayna's Greek huntress dress would have looked very cool, I wanted some colour to contrast with Soolin so I went for her green pantsuit. So they're both in those wide pleated 30s trousers.

My NaArMaMo 2009 Gallery is here.

Did Soolin ever wear anything else? These look great, especially Dayna.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Soolin had two main outfits: the one in this icon and the one I drew here, plus some grey overalls. Very colourless. Dayna fared much better in season 3 too; they all had boring grey in S4 except for Avon (whose grey was separated into black and white).

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I never noticed that; of course, I haven't watched S4 in years.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you!

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I have somewhere some notes I wrote on how the costumes - the changes in style - could be fitted into a wider social history of the B7 universe :) Total nonsense, probably, but fun.

[identity profile] miss-next.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
Very beautiful and dangerous. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
They are! The women always seemed tougher and scarier than the men, except for Avon, of course.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
hahahaa, I really love these. I wonder if the boys will lend themselves so easily to the 30s style?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
For guys it was all pleated trousers, little waistcoats, and big coats! I'm not sure how I'd transform their outfits, but I suppose I could use real 30s fashions with some B7 touches, e.g. the colours and the motifs on the knitted waistcoats. I dunno. Maybe a fun idea for next year. :-)

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha, yeah, well, a fun idea to contemplate. I think Vila could go over fairly well, and probably Tarrant. Avon, Blake, Gan and especially Travis would be harder. Well, maybe you could do Travis in one of those gangster suits, all black with a black shirt/tie combo, and the fedora-hat tipped low over his eyepatch eye, ahahaah.

[identity profile] executrix.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Chevrons are an Art Avon motif!

In the 30s, Travis could, not inappropriately, be dressed as a Storm Trooper.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
Both ladies are stunning! Including their make-up. The trousers are superb for them! The bomb is "very Art Deco"! :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think she did have a bomb a bit like that. Oh yes, here it is (http://www.framecaplib.com/b7lib/html/chars/images/cityedge/group/city185.htm). It has three white chevrons instead of one red one. Never mind. :-)

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
:-) I haven´t seen season 3 and 4 ( only that depressing end)...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't bother with season 4. You'll miss Soolin, and I like her, but on the whole it's just too depressing and doesn't have the same look and feel as the rest of B7. It feels tacked on--and it was.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
Season 4 does have some excellent stories, mainly in the second half of the season. Games is fun (though there's a big hole in logic/continuity at the end), plus Gold and Orbit.

It's also important for seeing how the story comes to its end. It's the ending of the character arcs for Blake and Avon and shows the changes that both men have been through. Blake now finds it hard to trust, and hard to know who to trust. Avon used to trust mostly himself, but now doubts himself, and only really trusts Blake. But neither man knows how much the other has changed...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Did you mean this for me, or for [livejournal.com profile] vjezkova? :-) I admit that Gold and Games have good moments, but in general it's a mess that succeeds in being both bleak and OTT.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's worth watching even S4 if you can- if you hate it, at least you'll know what you're hating when people discuss things. And there are innumerable things that led to great fanfic (Avon being sold, Avon being knocked unconscious a billion times, Servalan as Sleer is even more evil, Tarrant and Servalan in bed, etc). And it really does help to make sense of the last episode to know what led up to it.

And you may not hate it. It's very different from S1 and S2, but it seemed a logical progression to me and I like most of the episodes for different reasons (sometimes *because* they go so over the top, sometimes because they had really good ideas.)

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for that, I will work on it:-)

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
They both suit the Art Deco style very well and as has been said, even the bomb is the right period in design.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's a bit like one she had, and chevrons are an Art Deco motif.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
Another excellent job, especially in adapting Soolin's outfit into a more Deco style. I forgotten that outfit of Dayna's.

The subtle shading you do to mould the flow of the fabrics is very good. And clever use of Dayna's bomb (She'd acually have room to hide it in that outfit, unlike the one she wore in 'City...'.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I like the colour on Dayna. I prefer some of her other outfits but I didn't think they'd convert as well.

True! Where she hid it has caused a lot of discussion. ;-)

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, you've got the Art Deco slink and style down perfectly. :^)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I might do one more: Cally in her coat.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. She deserved a better coat than that one. It was really just an anorak.
kerravonsen: Soolin with a half-smile: impress me (Soolin-impress-me)

[personal profile] kerravonsen 2009-08-24 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I particularly like Soolin; her hair is lovely.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I'm pleased, esp since I changed it at the last minute from a bun.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Lovely. Now want to see Avon in a Zoot suit!

Travis I would make a good 30s gangster, he suits that style of suit.
Mind you pics 1 and 3 here would do for Art Deco Travis. :¬D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Or Travis in his cloak and hat in "Gambit"! I think I'll leave the guys for next year. I'm always casting about for subjects, and they'll take care of a week or so.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
That is extremely elegant - much moreso than the originals :) Lovely.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
They could both look stunning, Dayna especially, being lucky enough to get some colour in her outfits. Thank you. :-)

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
She did - mind you, her taste in clothes was extremely... variable :)
