Happy St Patrick's Day!

Happy St Patrick's Day to those who celebrate it, whether Irish or not! Vila and I raise a glass of bright green adrenaline and soma to you.

I was amused at the NASA picture of the day. Even though it was dated the 16th, it was already the 17th here.
SPUD IN SPAAAAACE!

Indeed!A nice one.
I would like to join you with the toast. Happy St. Patrick!

Apparently he kept the snakes out of Ireland! We don't have any either, but neither do we have a saint.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
We do have the saint, who has been also a patron of the Czech Lands - St.Václav - Wenceslas, and yes, he is that one from the carol! :-)
Snakes - well, vipers, nothing extremely dangerous.Poor things are frightened only seeing people.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
I like snakes--Beautiful creatures--but we're not allowed to have them here, even in zoos, I think. I have had pythons draped over me in Malaysia though. :-)

So, was St Václav a king like in the carol?

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Václav was actually a prince in the 10th century Czech state and he was a supporter of Christianity from the West against original pagan society. Thus he was also spreading a new feudal system. He was a great diplomat and he wasalso educated - both quite unheard in this time of fights and strong warlords. His opposition (his own brother) had him killed and he became a martyr and lately a patron of the Czech lands.
There is St.Václav´s cult in our history and culture, and there is a legend that Václav and his knights are sleeping inside Blaník mountain and in the worst time for our nation they will wake up and ride to help...

He's very like Arthur. who sleeps with his knights till England needs him! I'm going to have to read up on him now. I had now idea he was from so far back.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, we had real kings of this name, Václav I,II, III and IV.
The first three were of the Czech Přemyslid family, the last was of Lucemburg family. But they are not saints - hahaha, definitely not.
There are old Latin legends about St.Václav, and chorals. There is definitely more about him, the history of the beginning of Czech State is very exciting!

I'd forgotten it was St. Patricks' Day until I saw someone walking down the street in a silly green hat. It's funny how traditions develop and mutate.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
It was big in the offices I worked in: an excuse for a drink after work, I think. I never wore green because I have no Irish in me, but lots did.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
yep, it's a spud ;0)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
It is!

There's a mosque around the corner from me (...used to be a synagogue...) that was draped in green banners on Sunday, and I thought, blimey, that's ecumenical, but I think that's the official color for the Prophet's birthday celebration.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, green is the colour of Islam.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Same to you. :)

There's a definite spud resemblance there...

Slytherins drink A&S! Perfect icon. :-)

nd here (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/5000892/Mystery-condition-leaves-hedgehog-with-no-spines.html) is a different Spud.

Poor little thing.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor little thing!

We found a bald baby hedgehog a while back, but it was just mange; he did really well on treatment and cat food. I used to get e-mails from the vet saying it was time for Edgy's worming pill! Greg is sure he saw him since with a female (a smaller one anyway).
