Another five topics

And once again, by commenting on a post, I have five more topics. Sorry it took a few days to get round to it. :-P

Comment on this post asking for topics and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

[livejournal.com profile] lizamanynames gave me art, Stark, kitties, Tiggers, and Romans.

Art
I only feel qualified to talk about mine. I've always drawn, as long as I can remember, so much so that my father once devastated me by throwing my sketch pad in the bin in an attempt to make me spend more time outside playing like a normal child. I retrieved it later when he wasn't there, but food had been put on top of it and it was ruined. I even drew without pencil or paper, sketching in the air with my finger and rubbing it out with a hand-wave if it was wrong. People must have pitied my parents for having such a weird child. I won a few prizes at school, then just drew for my own pleasure till I got a graphics pad and discovered layers and Ctrl-Z to undo: win! I know my limits. I'll never be a real artist, but I can still have fun with it.

Stark
They only showed season1 of Farscape here, so I didn't get to see the whole series till much later, well after I met [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 who convinced me I needed to. I remember discussing it with her, and asking if her beloved Stark was "that guy filled with light" which she thought was weirdly prescient. Actually, I think I saw his light when he lifted his mask to cross Gilina over. If not, then I'm not sure where I got the idea from. Anyway, I loved him too, right from his first ep, and there should have been a lot more Starkness in the series. I think he's like Vila in B7: for me the tragic heart and soul of the show, but unlike Vila, he does end with some healing and hope.

Kitties
Or cats as we call 'em here. "Kitty" is only ever used in conjunction with "litter". Baby cats are kittens, and remain so till they're about one year old according to the food manufacturers, but my so-called kittens are too big for the name now. Teens? Kids? Cubs!

Anyway, I loved cats from the very beginning, even though the one we got when I was three was a bad-tempered and unaffectionate beast: a grey half-Persian originally named Fluffy (very trite) but renamed Beethoven due to her resemblance to that grumpy bust of him: same look and same wild grey hair. Every time I saw a kitten, I'd say I wanted one, and my parents would point out the fact that we had a cat at home, even though the main interaction I had with old grumpy-guts was her habit of laying on whatever I was trying to read.

The next family cat was Sam (another common cat name, bestowed by my little brother). I was a teenager old enough to stay home while he and my parents were visiting friends in Hamilton, and a scrawny little tabby kitten followed them down the street from their car, crying piteously. They went to see their friends, and a couple of hours later when they left, the kitten was sitting outside waiting for them. "Persistence must be rewarded," said my father (a comment that became a family saying) and they brought him home, a rat-like little thing who grew into the most delightful, playful little kitten who would snuggle up with my brother and me and try to put his head in front of ours while we were watching TV, telling us "I'm much more interesting!" He became a large and magnificent large tabby (this icon looks just him) who never realised that he was too heavy to lie on our chests and shoulders as he used to.

I had two cats when I was in Israel (Bissel and Koshka) whom I had to leave behind with friends when I left for Europe, then when I came back to NZ, I rescued a little stray tabby kitten, Sigi, and Petra, another tabby whom a bankrupt pet-shop who only had the one pet left was going to put down. They were so intelligent and sweet and loving, and I still miss them, just as I do my Tessa. The others since you know about. :-)

Tiggers
Tiggers are bouncy. Tiggers like water. Tiggers don't like honey, to Pooh's great relief. I have two Tiggers because Greg bought me two from Malaysia once; one is in the TV room and the other is in here somewhere among the other plushies.

If you meant tigers, see my posts about the time I played with white tiger cubs and fed them.
Birthday surprise!
More photos from old camera, including adorable last one

Romans
Another early love which I think grew from my father's books about history and Roman and Greek myths which I used to nick from his study to read. We did Roman history in the third form (now Year 9) and I still remember getting bonus points for my drawing of the Emperor Augustus. The next year I went to a new town and high school, and because I had to have done Latin to be in the top stream, my father taught me a whole year's worth over the summer holidays, and I was totally hooked. I find the history, society, and the eccentricity of the major players fascinating. And yes, I adore I, Claudius, in book and TV form.

I do Roman re-enactment with the Second Legion Augusta here, and I'm the vexillarius (standard bearer). There's a pic of me doing so in this post, and more of the legion plus added pearlies (but not me as I was taking the pictures) in this one. Come on, you knew I was a nerd!

Irascible cats always liked me when I was a kid too. My grandmother had a very smart Siamese whom my aunt rescued from a testing lab. This cat would hide from all the other children who came anywhere near her but not me. She'd lie across my lap, head and front feet off one side, tail and back feet off the other, and purr. Seemed the only reason for my existence, in her opinion, was to make a lap for her.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember discussing it with her, and asking if her beloved Stark was "that guy filled with light"

That's cool. I don't remember that at all. :)

The next family cat was Sam (another common cat name, bestowed by my little brother).

Why is Sam such a common name for a cat, anyway? I knew a Siamese called Sam once.

who never realised that he was too heavy to lie on our chests and shoulders as he used to.

Boy, do I know how that is! I keep trying to point out to Vir that he weighs twenty-five freakin' pounds, but he never seems to get the message. :)

Ahahahaa, I love the thing about cat/kittens. I mean, obviously a kitten is only a baby cat, but I call a lot of cats kitten/kitty too, including my huge, fat 6 year old ginger. It's really more of a name of affection though. I'll just walk down the hall and see her and go "Kitty!" I just love her reactions, ahhaha.

I watched the first four episodes of Farscape before giving up on it, and don't remember Stark at all--was he introduced later?

And you can pick five things for me if you want.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Kitties" just isn't a word used in my dialect! OTOH I do sometimes call them pussy-cats which would make some people choke. :-P

You gave up too soon! It took a while to get going, but really got into its stride later in the season, though even the early eps have things that are important, or characters you meet again. Stark was introduced near the end of S1; you'd remember him if you'd seen him! This is him in the icon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
And your five topics are:
the Beatles
Leela
roleplaying
Wash
clay figures

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, the poor thing! I'm so glad she was rescued and had a good life from then on, and loved someone.

Cats do usually like me; I always let a strange cat sniff my hand before I touch them and they appreciate the courtesy. :-)

Beethoven wouldn't sit on anyone, but I figured she lay on my books and papers because it was where I was looking and she wanted attention. Once I got into my brother's play pen to read a book on the floor in peace, and she came through the bars to me. I didn't think she'd fit, but she was nearly all fur. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know why Sam's so common. Morphic resonance? ;-) We thought we were fairly original, but I've come across so many Sams since then. Stray cats I have found homes for include Luke, Larry, Grigina (little grey one), and Cammie, none of which I've heard as a cat name since. Once though, when we took Claudia and Tessa to the boarding cattery, there was another Claudia and Tessa there. They could have seen ours earlier though and decided they were nice names, I dunno.

Vic is a big guy now; in fact Greg says he's the Hurley of the household. He was lying on my chest in bed yesterday and I could hardly breathe, but he was so smoochy and purry I didn't have the heart to roll him off.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I never touch a cat without the cat's permission. Sometimes all they do is sniff your hand, and sometimes they don't even do that for a while until they're used to you being there.

I remember meeting a very mean old lady once with a very fat white Persian who was much nicer than she was. I opened a book and the cat set on top of it. We became fast friends, although her person never took a liking to me.

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Eek, that was idiotic and horrible of your dad. How awful:O *shudders* Gah, that reminds me of too many crappy experiences like that with my maternal unit. But it's been interesting reading your answers. Interesting that you managed to become such a big cat fan despite having to have a grumpy one around for so long!

And you can give me topics if you want to. I'm bored anyway and trying to avoid writing a Redemption con report or typing up my Photoshop panel notes. *procrastinates hard*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Eek, that was idiotic and horrible of your dad.

It was. I was upset for days. He looked a little like Avon, and was even snarkier and meaner than the S4 version (except for actually using a pump-action shotgun). I lived in fear of him except when we had something in common like Latin, classics, and our shared sense of humour. I loved those Latin lessons with him--and I came top of the class at the new school. :-P

And you can give me topics if you want to. I'm bored anyway and trying to avoid writing a Redemption con report or typing up my Photoshop panel notes.

Oh, but I want to read both of those! Sorry, I was out, but here you go:
Brian Blessed
The Prisoner
Chiana
Finnish countryside
yoga

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
And I hadn't noticed your icon when I set those topics!

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Eep. Scary. *rubs* I'm sorry your parents were so unpleasant.

HAHAHAHAHAAAA, BLESSED. *ships him and Chiana now*

I'll try and do my best.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
YES! And the perfect icon. I love it!

My father was fine when we were being geeky together. Otherwise he was best avoided. At least he didn't constantly run me down like my mother did.

[identity profile] lizamanynames.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I didn't know that about the use of "kitties" that's interesting.

"That guy filled with light" - what a beautiful way to put it! :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
He was intriguing and mysterious, and I think I may have been thinking of the first appearance of Kosh on B5. Or he really did shine his ever-lovin' light on Gilina. :-)

[identity profile] sorsha-khan.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Roman re-enactment?! Love it! Love the way you make being a nerd cool ;-) Have just started reading Lindsey Davis' Didius Falco books and am falling in love (again) with ancient Rome.
Need to go to work now :-( Wanna give me topics to ramble about later?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
I love Marcus Didius Falco! I even named our Roman soldier statue in the garden after him.

OK, here you go:
parrots
natural medicine / remedies
Jimmy Nail (yay for Oz and his wonderful voice)
St Trinians (see my Searle-type icon)
Christianity

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, "pussy cat" is a lot less commonly used around here, though not entirely unheard of, especially amongst the older generation. I've called mine "puss puss" before. I think double "ss" sound catches her attention well. Interesting though, how words don't carry over sometimes.

Maybe I'll give Farscape another try sometime. I just didn't like any of the characters even in the first four episodes, so it was hard to keep going. Generally I like or think I'll like at least someone by then.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Tell you what, give it the first season and see what you think. I think you'll like Chiana (thief and sexy with it) and Stark (a nutter, but vulnerable and sweet); Chiana at least is a regular character once she arrives. There are two eps you can miss out altogether: 102: I ET, and 114: Jeremiah Crichton (soooo boring). Chiana is introduced in 115: Durka Returns, and Stark in 119: Nerve and 120: The Hidden Memory. A lot of the other eps have characters who come back, or plot points that are important later, some really, really important.

If you still don't like it after a season, give up because you won't. :-) But really, I did find it very slow starting, and I came to love most of them, even Rygel who starts off an annoying little bastard. :-)

Good night!

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
Night!

Maybe I'll look into Farscape again, one of these days. I have to finish DS9 first!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
And that'll take a while!

Night!

[identity profile] crycraven.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, you ARE a real artist!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. But I could be an illustrator! :-)
ext_166: Over a Canadian flag: "No, don't you get it? If you die in Canada, you die in real life!" (Shine On)

[identity profile] lizamanynames.livejournal.com 2009-03-12 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
He did! He did; it was beautiful.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Then that was where I got the idea that he was filled with light!
