President Obama!

The inauguration and speech was definitely worth getting up at 5am for!

We're going out for dinner tonight to celebrate. :-)

It definitely was a historic event. They had it broadcasting on a TV in the lunchroom at work. Let's hope that all our hopes are proven correct. It would be nice for something to go right.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
He's got a hard task ahead, but at least he's going to try to do some good, and that will be a real change.

I really liked his speech. Especially this part:

"As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake."

As you know I have a special place of infamy in my heart for people who think the ends justifies any means. So this part really made me sit up.

I liked that too. I'm looking forward to a lot of changes.

5 am ! Damn inconsiderate of them to hold it at such a ridiculous hour. :)

We're used to that sort of thing by now.

"...by the dawn's early light..."

Kind of symbolic, really :)

It was, come to think of it!

I missed the swearing-in, but tuned in only a few seconds into the speech. He does speak rather well, our President, doesn't he? :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
He does! I'm not much for speeches, but that was a very good one, and makes me feel hopeful. I'd rather lost that.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
You, me, and a good chunk of the United States, at the very least. :)

It feels strange, and good, to hope again, doen't it? Ad YES, he's amazing at speeches. They're deep and affecting - he's going to go down like JFK, I bet.

In history, I mean. GOD FORBID anything else....

[identity profile] nautile26.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
I thoroughly agree. We were up at 3:30am and it was well worth it. The new President was very impressive. I do wish him well.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! That was even earlier than us! I was surprised I didn't see more lights on when I got up.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations. I have seen an inauguration for the first time. Amazing. I so hope this president will be good for you and us!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen one live before either (never really felt the interest). I couldn't miss this one though!

I hope some good filters down to us too.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It was teatime here. I'm old enough to remember the hope when JFK came in and this is a similar feeling.

Though there was no live coverage in those days, we had to wait for the film to be flown over to see any of it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't the first time I've thought about JFK and the hope he brought: his youth and enthusiasm, and inspiring things like the Peace Corps and the space program. Wasn't he also the first non-WASP, being a Catholic?

This is the first inauguration I've watched (or wanted to watch) live, though it may in fact be the first one they've shown live here.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't he also the first non-WASP, being a Catholic?

I think so. I know they were very suspicious of a Catholic, worried the Pope would be running the country.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I never heard that! I can't even get my head around anything thinking a filthy rich family like the Kennedys wasn't quite establishment.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
But it wasn't old money. The family had only been in the US for three or four generations. And it was his father who made the fortune in business.

Apparently JFK was the first president born in the 20th century. And Obama is the first to be too young to have his response to the draft questioned.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The family had only been in the US for three or four generations,

That's a long time here!

Obama is even young enough to know how to use new tech, and give Leonard Nimoy a Vulcan salute when he passed him in a corridor. :-) The first geek President!

Praise, joy, hope!

NOw, the hard work starts.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah. And he's getting right into it too.
