It definitely was a historic event. They had it broadcasting on a TV in the lunchroom at work. Let's hope that all our hopes are proven correct. It would be nice for something to go right.

I really liked his speech. Especially this part:

"As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake."

As you know I have a special place of infamy in my heart for people who think the ends justifies any means. So this part really made me sit up.

I missed the swearing-in, but tuned in only a few seconds into the speech. He does speak rather well, our President, doesn't he? :)

It was teatime here. I'm old enough to remember the hope when JFK came in and this is a similar feeling.

Though there was no live coverage in those days, we had to wait for the film to be flown over to see any of it.

This isn't the first time I've thought about JFK and the hope he brought: his youth and enthusiasm, and inspiring things like the Peace Corps and the space program. Wasn't he also the first non-WASP, being a Catholic?

This is the first inauguration I've watched (or wanted to watch) live, though it may in fact be the first one they've shown live here.

I think so. I know they were very suspicious of a Catholic, worried the Pope would be running the country.

Really? I never heard that! I can't even get my head around anything thinking a filthy rich family like the Kennedys wasn't quite establishment.

But it wasn't old money. The family had only been in the US for three or four generations. And it was his father who made the fortune in business.

Apparently JFK was the first president born in the 20th century. And Obama is the first to be too young to have his response to the draft questioned.

Obama is even young enough to know how to use new tech, and give Leonard Nimoy a Vulcan salute when he passed him in a corridor. :-) The first geek President!

It feels strange, and good, to hope again, doen't it? Ad YES, he's amazing at speeches. They're deep and affecting - he's going to go down like JFK, I bet.

In history, I mean. GOD FORBID anything else....
