What sort of nerd am I?

Because I haven't done one of these things for a while, and the results weren't bad. Though acting is nerdy, and 60 books are a lot for a lifetime? I read a lot more than that in a year.

Well, maybe you aren't this extreme, but you're in league with the crazy scientists/mathematicians of today. Very few people have a talent for math, and science is something that takes a lot of brains as well. Thank whichever God you worship, or don't worship, for you people! Most of us would have died off without your help.

And with our help too, sadly. I thought art would score higher though, but then it's not as important to me as writing.

It bothers me that all the "Do you sew" questions are like "ANIME or regular clothes only." Because while I used to do anime costumes, I haven't done any anime costume in years. But I still costume. I hate that that gives me a disporportionately high anime score. XD Ah well.

My math score barely even registered though. You've totally got me beat there. I wish I was remotely good at math. Sigh.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, some of the questions were hard to answer; I wanted a 'none of the above' option. What, cosplay is all about anime? And they think 60+ books is a huge number to read in a lifetime. :-P

Being good at physics and maths (and writing) has got me nowhere, so don't envy me. :-(

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was like, I read about 60 books a year give or take. It also felt fairly younger-generation oriented, despite the age question. Like, there was a band question, but it was either "I'm in high school band/local band" or nothing. No "I was in a band in high school but have since grown up and gotten a day job" sort of answer. Ah well.

And, well, I got kicked out of my first university for being unable to pass Alegebra II. (I took, and failed it, five times.) It would have saved me a lot of heartache and money if I'd been at least not completely retarded at it. It is utterly humiliating to show up daily, spend hours tutoring and studying and still fail a basis math class when the slackers who show up just for the finals and exams and listen to their ipods and sleep through the lecturse do better than you.

Everyone's brain works differently! I knew a girl who could add up four columns of figures (i.e. arithmetic) just looking at them but had no grasp of pure maths at all. I once spent an evening trying to prove to her that a negative negative is a positive--she needed one statistics paper for her history degree.

It seems odd that you were required to do algebra. What was your degree? Arts students here don't have to go near it.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Algebra II is required in California (or at least was when I graduated, I don't know about now) to graduate high school. I eventually got a D+ or something and thus technically "passed." It was pretty ridiculous.

My degree was in English, but I had to take a few "core" math classes, as do all English/Art majors. It's a real problem for a lot of students, too. I have another friend who had to drop out of college because she couldn't pass a basic math class (she was in film, and has moved to Las Vegas to do what I had to do--go to school there becasue we were kicked out of California schools). I know [livejournal.com profile] babel is struggling with her required math class right now too. She's a Classics Latin/Greek major, etc.

It's ridiculous they make people getting out types of degrees take math courses. It's ridiculous that I can't pass the "Math Class for English Majors" which is supposedly REALLY EASY. I can't do it. My brain just does not work that way. And even if I DO get it that night, there's no way I'll remember which formula to use on a test, let alone a cumulative midterm/final exam. Ugh.

It's all about money though, I think. Math teachers get paid nicely for teaching these remedial math courses. It's just really ridiculous that they'll force a brilliant English student to drop out of college because s/he can't pass a math class. I don't cry very much, but I broke down in my advisor's office once, begging him to let me take four more 400-level/senior-level English courses if he'd just waive the math requirement. UGh. It makes me stomach go in knots just thinking about it.

I'm sorry it worked out so badly for you. That's so harsh, and odd too. Why would English or Classics students need maths? At high school, all students have to do core math till year 11. For 12 and 13, people can specialise and just do the subjects they want to. Though English is meant to be compulsory, I managed to get out of it in year 13. :-D I love reading and writing, but not what they taught, and studying books kills them for me.

At uni, people just do the subjects in their area. I did maths, phsyics, chemistry, engineering, and a year of Science (ie simple) German because I spoke it already and only needed to turn up for the exam to get an A+.

Anyway, my degree counts for zip now, so take heart. There's such a thing as being over-qualified for crap jobs, which I seem to be.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've experience the same "over qualifications" for crap jobs myself. It's a real bummer.

And, that sounds a lot better than what we have. I'm fairly sure all degrees have to take basic courses. My best friend is getting a Vocal Performance degree right now and is struggling through English 101 and such. Not because it's HARD but because she has so much other stuff on her plate that is actually REQUIRED. I hate the way the system is set up right now. It's so horrible here. I'm sure that there are Math and Science students forced to take basic English courses who are struggling with those too.

It's just a bit unfair, because a badly written essay still shows an amount of work/research and effort put into it. A wrong math problem is a wrong math problem. Ah well. I did eventually get my degree fat load of good it's done me.

And they think 60+ books is a huge number to read in a lifetime.

Yeah, that was completely baffling. I mean, when I was a teenager I owned more than 200 books, let alone all the other ones I'd borrowed from the library.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
[nods] I used to read 4-6 books a week (it's now 1-3) and ran out of material at the school library early on, so used to go to the public one at least once a week. I wasn't exactly average, but lots of other students read a lot too.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Having read their illiterate mish-mashes for literature nerds and science/math nerds, I've decided that I'm a spelling and grammar nerd and proud of it. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to correct and edit mine before I posted it. I have standards that must be met, even if I'm a maths and science nerd.

There are still a couple of things that slipped through:

"scientists/mathmeticians"

"...and science is something takes a lot of brains as well."

Fixed! Hard to see amongst all the Americanisms.

Wow ... what a load of stereotypes there!

Still, I won't be able to resist doing now.

I suspect it was written by a high-school student (and not a very good one) who hardly reads and thinks fandom = animé.
