Day 29 - Travis 2

Today's entry for the [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo National Art Making Month challenge is the last of the B7 portraits.

Travis 2

Just for a change, he's monochrome. I hadn't done any B&W this month and it seems to suit him.

My NaArMaMo 2008 Gallery is here.

I like this one. The monochrome does work very well. I love how you've brought out the texture of his uniform.

He looks a bit soft and thoughtul for Travis, but you've definitely caught something about him. The hair in particular is good, and the overall shape of the face is correct. Good work.

Strangely, if you look at stills of Travis 2, he is soft and thoughtful.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right! In all of the caps I looked at using, he looked thoughtful and not at all hard like Travis 1 did.

[looks at your icon. And wow, I think that was the one I used!

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It is very similar, maybe a still from the same scene, I thought.

That's one of the bizarre things I love about Travis 2. He should be the petulant, sort of psycho one, and he is, but there's something unexpectedly introspective about him, too. It doesn't work out real well for him, but in a lot of ways, he's the more cerebral Travis.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
He is, especially from 'Trial' onwards. I like him best in 'Gambit', where he shows a lot more of himself than Travis 1 ever did. I almost decided on a still with him in his hat (such a great outfit on him) but went for a more usual shot.

It would have been so interesting had he joined the crew in 'Hostage'.

Thanks! And as Red pointed out, not of his screencaps do look thoughtful. :-)

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's very much him, if looking startlingly benign... :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of his screencaps do!

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
That you've managed to pull off the texture of his uniform with such stark colors is impressive! It looks great and is so "simply" done! Very nice. His hair is also especially nice, the way it catches the light. I wish you'd give the shadows around his face and neck the same softness you gave his hair and eye patch, but this is still quite well done. I quite like it! And considering how much I dislike T2, that says a lot!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is a mix of styles. I was going for the same look (but in mono) as the Blake one (http://pics.livejournal.com/vilakins/pic/001k03r2), with soft hair and hard shading, but here are tw more versions I've just done: one all soft, and one all hard. I think I like the second one better.

Mmm, I like them both, though I do like the softeness, too. But Travis is a hard character so that works too.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah well, I'll leave all three up so people can have a choice of Traves (the accepted plural).

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
This is very good--I think I like it better than the one of the first Travis.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I like it too: more impact.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh great - black and white suits him in all aspects! Thanks!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the impact of B&W and I thought it would make him stand out instead of just being another Travis. :-)

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
And this is defifitely true!

[identity profile] hafren.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that is good!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :-D

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, the eye! Eeeee! *runs away* He's excellent.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! And this one doesn't even have a white dot (because there wasn't one in the screencap).

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, the B&W suits him!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It does! I should do more B&W.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
He's great!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :-D

[identity profile] crycraven.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh bw Travis - you skilfully avoid having to find a colour named 'crazy-arse blue'.

For his crazy-arse blue eye.

[identity profile] lizamanynames.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow. I think this might actually be my favourite one - and i'm not even that fond of Travis as a character. But this one is just so visually striking.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
B&W is, which is why I used it when I realised I had done one this month. Last time I did a Jeeves and a James Mason.
