Tragic comment

And here's a snippet from today's NZ Herald.

church

The language might be a bit yoof but I applaud the church and hope a lot of people saw the piece which was on the back page of section 1. What I can't believe is the bloody tragedy that this sort of statement is even necessary. Isn't it obvious? After all, no-one believes that slavery is a good thing any more despite it being in the Bible. I really get depressed about people sometimes.

What gets about people who say "it's condemned in the Bible" is how selective they are. So, I seem to recall, is lending money at interest, failing to marry your brother's widow and quite a lot of common dietary habits, but people have no trouble deciding the world's moved on from that...

Exactly.

Even though I still won't eat pork.

how selective they are

Absolutely. And not only selective in terms of particular passages, but also in terms of interpretations of those passages. Many of the famous 'condemnations' can easily be argued to be nothing of the kind.

Greater than my anger caused by such bigotry is my sadness at the pain caused to the many many people who find themselves rejected because of it.

Cool banner! Obviously, I approve of the sentiment, but I also applaud those responsible - sticking your head above this particular parapet at the moment isn't always a comfortable thing to do.

I certainly intend to call them up tomorrow and tell them how glad I am that they're doing so.

Good on you. And I agree with everything you said in your post, too.

Oooh, and if you go to this page, the vicar's email address is right there.

Thanks, and hey--he might be an SF fan! The White Hart Inn was Arthur C Clark, wasn't it?

Gosh, I hope they get their banner back. Shall write wee e-mail, yes. Ho hum.

I wrote an e-mail at the time but didn't get a reply. That paper has a huge circulation so I suppose they were inundated.
