Oh now look!

Since so many people are telling me I'm being negative, I want to emphasise that it's B7E I'm negative about. They've changed the characters and universe (come on, a populated galaxy in 200 years?) in their audio series and will do the same in a TV series.

If someone else were remaking B7 with say Martin Freeman as Vila and Dylan Moran as Avon, I'd be very excited. I even thought the head girl in St Trinian's would make a brilliant Servalan.

And if anyone thinks I'm a reactionary who hates remakes per se, I was almost alone in enjoying the HHGTTG film (in which Martin Freeman was Arthur) and am looking forward to the new Get Smart film when I was very dubious before I saw the excellent trailer. And why was it? Because the people playing Smart and 99 acted like them.

Filter? I didn't know you could do that.
I just love how people can say all kinds of negative things about Avon but the moment someone mentions something negative about Blake, they're all over you like you don't have a right to have your own opinion. Which gives me a perfect illustration to why I detest Blake.

It depends on your browser.

Oh, I've been flamed for saying Avon might have been a Beta promoted to Alpha which wasn't even an insult, and then there was the rabid Tarrant fan who hates anyone to write Tarrant as anything but perfect (and my story was actually sympathetic to him). But yes, I did get jumped on recently by two fans for criticising Blake for Star One. I'll have to be edit when I post my review of that ep there.

I use Internet Explorer. I'm guessing you don't?

hehe...I think I'll refrain from saying anything about Blake in Star One. I don't have anything positive to say about him at all in that one.

I use Firefox, but sorry, I meant your e-mail software. If it's Outlook, (I mainly use GMail) I know there are ways to redirect mail from certain people to other folders. I filter Jackie Speel and Carol the Tarrant fan out by sending them straight to the bin.

Neither do I. It's a pity the others didn't object much earlier.

Yes because we're all wary of the Blake fans jumping down our throats making us feel like we don't have a right to our opinions...and dare I say again, thereby illustrating exactly why I....hehe

Well Kal, after tonight, I don't feel like I have a right to any of my opinions.
Since there is so much debate about who to hate or love (at least that is how it seems to me) Avon or Blake, that's why I started thinking of writing my own fanfic.
An AU or AR or whatever that would make all of them political prisoners from the beginning.
I had this notion of a moral Avon for those who hated Avon and loved Blake. A Blake who isn't bossy or manipulative for those for who hated Blake and loved Avon.
And, I wonder if some people didn't like either of them?

And no, I was not thinking of making them be all sweet with each other like the Star Trek crew. I'd find some other reason for them to bicker.
I just get tired of the two different views of Avon and Blake.

Especially this debate:
1)Avon really cared after all. He never thought of spacing anyone on the London.
2) Avon's skin came first. He was thinking about spacing the London crew.
and:
1) Blake was a hero, he could do no wrong.
2)Blake was bossy and manipulative.

Right now though? I've been a B7 fan for over 22 years and I wish I'd never heard of it.
I think I hooked up with fandom too late in the day and there are too many fans out there with their version of fanon.

1) Blake was a hero, he could do no wrong.
2)Blake was bossy and manipulative.

Actually (argueth one of his greatest fans) he's a bossy manipulative hero who does plenty both right and wrong. Which is why I love him...

Everyone is entitled to their own personal opinion, its ramming it down other people's throats and refusing to accept any other view that is annoying.

Avon and Blake are both complex characters and it is fun to experiment with them. Trying to straitjacket them into a 2-D cut out is not doing either of them any justice.

Avon is perfectly capable of being caring AND a right bastard. Blake definitely was heroic, idealistic, bossy and manipulative!

Thanks. I use gmail. I guess I should set up a filter for some people. I really didn't want to though because I really do think that everyone is entitled to love or hate characters according to their own choice. And I genuinely am interested in the different opinions and how people arrived at them.

I filter Jackie because she's so annoying, and Carol for flaming. Nataca is a massive Blake fan, but she doesn't post enough for me to bother, and besides she's often very interesting if she's not replying.

Avon might have been a Beta promoted to Alpha

Oh, that makes perfect sense to me - it would explain his desire to have lots of cash, so that his social status would be unassailable. I can see him as a bored scion of an aristocratic family too. The great thing about B7 is that we know so little about what's going on that pretty much any interpretation can be made to work!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
He's also overly concerned with grade unlike the others; he's the only one who needles Vila about his. The comment in 'Space Fall' that others had the same chances he did also seems to show that he made the best of his. But yes, I can also see him as a bored aristo.

The people who were affronted at the suggestion thought that being a Beta implied that Avon was inherently inferior to an Alpha. I pointed out that one of the most brilliant mathematicians comes from a small Indian village and has illiterate parents but they weren't buying it; I suspect class-consciousness. [stab]
