DVD purchases

I was just saying to [livejournal.com profile] executrix that I have so many DVDs piled up to watch, I haven't managed to get back to the Buffy ones I bought a while ago second hand. And we have just acquired more.

Greg bought the entire Jeeves and Wooster (Fry and Laurie! I loved that when I saw it years ago) and some classic SF like Forbidden Planet and Blade Runner (a set of five, yes, five different cuts; he's not obsessed) in the Amazon sales, and today we just got The Great Escape and--wait for it, [livejournal.com profile] sallymn--The Magnificent Seven collection today. Greg held it up at the video store and said, "Want this? It has an excellent cast," and I said, "Yes!"

Not sure when I'll get to it though.

Ooh, Forbidden Planet is one of my favorite SF movies of all time.

Mine too--along with 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' (as you may be able to tell from my LJ subtitle). And Greg's never even seen it!

Heh, I used Robbie the Robot for that Man or Iron script cover.

I do love that subtitle. :)

You'll like Jeeves & Wooster! We watch them a lot. Best screen version I know of.

Oh, I saw them on TV here years ago and they were the highlight of my week! I already love them. [hums theme tune]

Oooh, was the M7 the film collection or the TV series?

And Jeeves and Wooster was great fun - no, not up to Plum himself (but then who is?) but the nearest any adaptation ever got...

Oh, bum. I might have guessed there was more to it. The films.

And I have seen Jeeves and Wooster years ago and loved it. I should edit my post.

I believe the movie is wonderful though, (the pilot of the TV series is based on it, and it certainly is :) and the movie has Yul Brynner, which is always a plus.

I'm the same: much better at buying DVDs than getting around to watching them.

I said to Greg yesterday that we need to have a system: an ep a week of the series, and Friday night and maybe Saturday nights in are film nights.

Oooh, Jeeves and Wooster! For some reason, I rarely think of putting it on, but I always love it when I do.

That sounds like the same set of Blade Runner that I got for Christmas! I can't see myself rewatching (and comparing and contrasting) all of the previous versions, but I'm hoping for good things from the new, digitally restored 'final cut'.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-30 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
If I know Greg, he'll watch all five DVDs. I'll watch the final one and be in here for the others. :-) I believe one of them was terribly long.

Laurie is a perfect chinless wonder, and though Fry doesn't look the way I imagine Jeeves, he is absolutely wonderful. Maybe an ep tonight after Wind in the Willows.

Right there with you re buying v. watching. There are several piles of DVDs atop my tv, waiting to be watched.

Jeeves and Wooster - such good value. Such dry, understated wit.

'Jeeves and Wooster' were the viewing highlight of my week when it was on here years ago. I want one tonight.

'The Great Escape' and 'The Magnificent Seven' - all you need now is 'The Dirty Dozen' and you've got the complete Charles Bronson Fabulous Ensemble Movie Collexion.

Which, as you might guess, I already have.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-30 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
We should get 'The Dirty Dozen'! It's a pre-runner of B7 after all, and it will add to our classic war collection. I have seen it years ago and don't remember it that well.

I see they're remaking it in 2010. This is probably not a good idea.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh - remaking a movie considered a classic of its kind, with an iconic cast. That always works well. /sarcasm

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly. I'm a bit sick of remakes; they're never as good as the originals.
