vilakins: Vila with a party hat and a glass of wine (xmas)

Tree!

There was a power cut last night (right in the middle of Eureka as they were firing up a massive magnetic field generator which was strangely disconcerting) and I found it hard to sleep with no fan so I've felt pretty knackered today. However I have put up my Christmas tree tree of light tree of glassy planets and model spaceships, though I mourn the purple gas giant I broke when I dropped it onto the side of a plant pot.

I meant to have posted my latest B7 review by now but hmm. Tomorrow is another day (and a fast approaching one).

shame about the purple gas giant :0( Hope you sleep well tonight

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I did, actually! Apart from the alarm going off at midnight because the power cut reset it. :-P I bought some valerian from the health shop on the way home to try and I think it helped.

Ooh. Will we get a peek at the not-a-christmas-tree?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks pretty much like last year's (http://vilakins.livejournal.com/246392.html): fairly standard till you actually take a closer look. Starbug's at the top this year.

We put a tree up in our school common room today.
Well, I say 'tree'. It might be more accurate to say 'traffic cone covered in wrapping paper with a branch stuck in the top, which is itself covered with cheap tinsel and fairy lights'
It actually looks quite good...if you don't look too closely.

They put up two trees at work yesterday which look pretty good actually: nice decorations and little lights. I don't have lights. They said my office needs to be 'festive' though and there isn't room for a tree. I suppose I'll have to let them drape some tinsel. I am not fond of tinsel.

Bah! to people who say one's office "needs" to be anything other than conducive to work! Maybe some stars?

Look, I have a plastic holly, pine, and berries thingy the accountant found in the street outside sitting by one of my pot plants. It's the right colours. What more do they want? ;-)

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh Noes you broke the purple swirly thing in space.
Very canny timing of the powercut.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
It was quite freaky: the lights went out and the lights on the various electronics (Greg's PC, the Tivos, the TV, the DVD player etc) stayed on for about a second, blinking with surprise like us in the dark. :-P

I'll put up my tree and decorations next week. My friends longhairedhippie and soul-rider come over every year to help, and now bring their little girl with them. I have a 6' fake tree and smother it with all sorts of decorations. I've only bought three this year, including a large glass bauble from Radio City Music Hall, with the Rockettes dancing around it, and a little resin wreath with the Empire State Building in the centre and yellow taxicabs in the foliage.

I'm also planning to find some festive decoration for Pudding, the round terracotta cat that sits on the front doorstep of the house.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Are your other decorations from around the world too?

I like the idea of a festive Christmas Pudding.

Aw! Poor purple gas giant!

That's something the Macmouses need to do at some point. We haven't got around to putting the plastic green thing up yet.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
I know! And I'm so careful. :-(

I do mine on the 6th and take it down on the 6th so it's up a month. Not that all that many people are likely to see it.

Being the thought that counts, yes. Alas, purple gas giant. I take it we shall not see its like again, except in photographs?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a blue one like it. It was the first one I put on too, admiring it greatly, then it fell when I was attaching one of the last.

The shop that sold them no longer exists but I could see if anyone else sells balls like that. They're incredibly beautiful and delicate and the reason I bought a tree: to have something to put them on. I've heard of people just stringing decorations on their walls, and I do have three hanging in the long window beside the front door (on floss), but a tree is easy.

[identity profile] jomacmouse.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not only easy, but somehow right too. That's probably habit as much as anything else, though...

I see Vila is ready for the season again :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes!

And I see you have one of those cute chick pics too!

[identity profile] bramblyhedge.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I LOVELOVELOVE your tree! I've never even thought of doing a SF tree myself, may have to steal your idea...*getting out action figures & hatching evil plots*

Meanwhile, my 12-year-old self wants to steal your Liberator. ;D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
:-D I bought that second-hand; it's an original Corgi one. I also have little B7 pipecleaner figures a friend made but I didn't put them in the tree. They're on the shelf above me with the Daleks and stuffed Cybermat and Red Dwarf crew.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2007-12-08 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh boo, I'm sorry about the purple gas giant. Maybe you'll be able to find a new planet, for them to have new adventures around?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-08 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
The Liberator's orbiting a blue one. :-)

I'm going to see if the local Christmas shop sells anything like that, but I think they seem to prefer fake Victoriana.

[identity profile] satan-pingu.livejournal.com 2007-12-08 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I like your tree! Shame about the purple gas giant. You could always gut Orac for a replacement :D

When I was somewhat smaller I foolishly chewed the pointy things off my Dad's corgi liberator. If only Servalan had employed the services of a giant space toddler...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-08 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Nooo! You ate the prongs! Poor Liberator! I bet your dad was a bit annoyed.
