Day 26 - Necklace

Today's entry for the [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo National Art Making Month challenge is a necklace because I did have the supplies for that, having bought the beads back in March on holiday in Taupo. The central bead has aqua, amber, purple, and a dash of black in it, so I used those colours in the other beads. I have two of each of the main colours left over so I can make matching earrings when I get the headpins and ear pieces I need.

Necklace

My NaArMaMo 2007 Gallery is here.

Why the icon? Because Tessa has come to sit on me and it's time for one.

I should hire you to make jewelry for me.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Let me know what you like (colours, styles, materials etc)! A necklace and/or erarrings wouldn't weigh that much to post either.

We have a lot of dichroic glass (http://images.google.co.nz/images?hl=en&cr=countryNZ&pwst=1&resnum=0&q=%22dichroic%20glass%22&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi) here which looks amazing on simple tigertail. I have a pendant very like this one (http://www.boneart.co.nz/custom/dichroic/317.jpg) and just bought a bead a bit like the one on the right of the page banner (http://www.kimzart.co.nz/c/124339/1/pendants.html) (blues and greens) to put on tigertail.

Oh, how awesome! I shall get back to you when I'm a bit less frantic. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Let me know the sort of thing you like and I'll see what I can find. I won't send you anything without a picture first. :-)

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, I don't even like jewelry, and I find that really cool.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, thanks! The purple of the smaller beads hasn't shown up that well; it matches that in the central one.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Huh! This'll amuse you: I just looked up dichroic glass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dichroic_glass) which is what the central bead is and it was developed by NASA!

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
High-tech and spiffy! :)

Lovely!

I feel quite drawn to the centre bead - it looks like a satisfying shape to hold :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
It is! It's very rounded and about the size of the top joint of my thumb. I like teardrop shapes.

This is just beautiful. I'd never heard of dichroic glass before, but it's gorgeous. I love the way the colours on the pendant recur on the - beads? - around the necklace.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I love dichroic glass. I just looked it up (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dichroic_glass) and it was developed by NASA!

Many of the dichroic pendants are too beautiful to share a necklace with anything else. I would post an example but because all I did is string one onto tigertail and add clasps, it's not really that creative. This one I at least matched beads to, designed, and spaced out. :-)

I'm not much for jewelry either, but this one is nice.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! It'll go with a few of my outfits with the aqua, purple, and black.

Oooh, I like how the beads match the pendant, and how it is sparse and clean.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! That is extra satisfying coming from an expert jewellery maker.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
That is a lovely necklace, so well designed. I love all types of jewelry and it galls me that I can only wear gold or silver if it is likely to touch my skin, I would have been asking you to do one for me when you first started making jewelry.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

That's a pity. I'm not likely to learn how to make brooches, except for the ones that are like kilt pins with beads on them; they'd be easy.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
Very pretty... :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

Who's that in your icon? Looks a bit like Fuchsia from Gormenghast.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2007-08-27 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well spotted! Yes, it was. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-27 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, go me!

[identity profile] matildabj.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
Lovely. You've got such a good eye for what will look nice.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I started with the central pendant and worked from there. I saw a lot of other lovely ones on Saturday for future projects.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
OOh sparkly pretty!
I love it, I don't wear jewellery just love looking at it. Much to the despair of my husband!
The pendant is gorgeous and in the picture the centre bead looks like it has a leafless tree in sandy soil against a clear blue sky.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that image! What looks like branches in the picture is just texture though. It could however be a black reed in the sand with rocks either side.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds just as good.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's very classy. The way the highlights show on the pendant, it looks like a sailboat to me. I hope someday you show us a photo of you wearing it.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo, yes, a pic of yuo wearing it ! You've chosen the colours very well, and I love dichroic glass. I got the lovliest pair of earrings about three weeks ago. Must wear them out sometime.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
What colours are they? They always looks so rich and deep.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2007-08-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
The earrings are round nuggests of deep blue and red, with a gold wash overlay. I got them from a seller on ebay.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-27 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
They sound gorgeous. I love how rich the colours are, all shimmery and metallic.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
beautiful :0)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-26 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!
