I finally got round to making a Hiro icon. :-)

I'm not sure how I'd do a "Save the bounty hunter; save the galaxy" icon. I'd need to do a scene or two from Blake in Isaac's style, and I'm not sure I can manage that. Does anyone know where there are good screencaps of his paintings?

Can you get to nbc.com? (I'm not sure you can from outside the US.) They have comics which are supposed to be supplementary to the show; they may be similar to Isaac's.

I can get in! They're by different graphic artists, so they vary in style. I'd love to read them but the text boxes are too small. Maybe I'll try again later with IE.

There is a 'zoom' at the bottom of the page, but it's very annoying to use. However, if you select 'printable version' on the page before the comic, it gives you a .pdf file, which is much easier to read, IMO. Which I've only just discovered, so now I may read them myself. :)

I used the zoom when I first went to look, but it only zoomed part of the page and wouldn't let me see the rest. I'll try the PDF versions too because they look interesting.

Mmmm, very nice :)

From an icon artist too! Thanks!

Ahh, but you're a real artist too :)

Thank you! I like making comic book icons, and Hiro is one in canon!

Oh, that icon's adorable too! :)

Cuteness rules!! (wonders if she should find a Hiro icon too... even though she has no spaces and six more she wants to upload...)

Adorable icon :)

This Wikipedia entry has a list (scroll to the bottom) of links to images of Isaac's paintings.

Just what I need; thanks! I'll have to draw the picture(s) myself rather than just play with screencaps.

I have no screencaps for you, but, yay, Hiro icon! :)

(Man, I still totally need one.)

Everyone should have one! ;-)

Icon help?

[identity profile] ahavah-ehyeh.livejournal.com 2008-04-06 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hi there! A long while back, I found an icon tutorial on [livejournal.com profile] gimp_tutorial, which linked to a post on [livejournal.com profile] galadhir's journal that explained how to make cartoons from pictures. I enjoyed the effect very much and made this icon from it. Now I'd like to do more, only the fellow seems to have deleted his journal, and now the tut is lost to me. He gave credit to you, and I came a-hunting in hopes that you might have the tutorial somewhere. I'd really love to create more like this, if you could help me out. Thanks so much!

The tutorial I used when I started was this Photoshop one (http://not-a-painter.livejournal.com/5352.html), but you can translate it to GIMP.

- copy layer and set to screen if the image is dark, repeating if necessary
- flatten image
- copy background layer
- instead of poster edges, use the 'cartoon' filter
- layer -> color -> desaturate
- layer -> color -> threshold, then fiddle with the outer two pointers till you like the effect
- select the white and delete (edit -> clear)
- clean up the black by deleting or drawing over lines to make them clearer
-go to the bottom layers and paint under the black

I like two layers under the cartoon one: one for painting the colours in, and the bottom one for doing a background of some sort like this icon, the first one I ever made with this method.

I hope that's clear. I've never done a proper tut with screencaps etc.

You're my hero! Thank you so much! I'll try it out properly later, but it looks fairly straightforward. It's been so long since I found the original tutorial that I didn't remember a single step. I appreciate your passing it on. It's quite a fun one.

Thanks again!
