Doctor Who: Gridlock

And for once I'm not the last one on my flist to see it. That? Was an excellent and joy-making ep.

Speaking of flists, I loved the motorway people having friends lists. Since I can't think of anything I didn't like, here's all the stuff I did:

  • Cats! And an adorable Irish one played by Ardal O'Hanlon (Dougal in Father Ted).
  • Kittens! I wonder when they become sentient, but they were only two months old.
  • The motorway people, a wonderfully eccentric lot undefeated by their lives, esp the two old ladies and their book.
  • Martha being stroppy and brave and intelligent and making the Doctor talk to her at the end.
  • The Doctor telling her about Gallifrey (but not--yet--that he was the cause).
  • Novice Hame redeeming herself by tending the Face of Boe and saving the undercity. Oh and having the gun for pirates.
  • The plot not being about the callous disregard of the undercity's people, but the saving of them.
  • It wasn't on Earth (well, the old one)!
I think this is the best of this season so far. I hope they keep the quality up--and Don't Mention the Rose.

I loved this episode too, Irish cat and wife were excellent, and their babies were adorable. In fact i agree with everything you said, I even liked the monsters living in the fast lane, they were reasonably believable, not every species in the universe would be oxygen breathers.

True. I believe they were in a previous story going by someone's remark.

I actually honestly felt scared when the crab caught Martha's car and was pinchering it. I feel like a dork for admitting it, but I did. As Gratuitious Doctor Who monsters go, they were excellent. :)

The Doctor telling her about Gallifrey (but not--yet--that he was the cause).

Mind you, I don't think he even told Rose that he was the cause. We only found out because we as viewers were able to watch his conversation with the Dalek in "Dalek". On all other occasions the Doctor said that the Daleks were the cause.

But, yes, I loved his descriptions of Gallifrey.

I'm not sure why I'm not squeeing like everyone else on my flist, though I did enjoy it.
Well, I suppose I'm low with this cold (which I seem to be getting over, at least).

Or huge relief because it was so much better then many other eps he's written, including the dire original New Earth one? ;-)

I think that the two RTD-written episodes in this series have been better than anything he managed in the first two series, which is encouraging. He is (presumably) an intelligent man, so perhaps he has listened to some of the criticisms of his episodes in the first two series.

Given how much he sneers at fans, I somehow doubt it was from that quarter then.

How many two month old human babies are that sentient? Besides one said "Mama!" what more do you want! (Admittedly I couldn't help but think of Baby Milo in Planet of The Apes).
Yay to more cat people.
There is something essentially British about that Motorway. People waiting endlessly in line for years stoically assuming there would be a journey's end.

As for the rest of New New York, what sort of virus travels that fast? I can understand them being so caught up in the patches that they simply "stopped".

Poor face of Bo! Does that mean we are going to have the Master returning?

As for the Doctor being the cause? The Timelords and the Daleks have been trying to wipe each other out since "Genesis of The Daleks". He might have played his part but he was hardly the sole cause of the Time War.

How many two month old human babies are that sentient?

This was my point.

Besides one said "Mama!"

Neither I nor Greg heard that. How cute!

Yeah, 7 minutes is a bit steep. I thought at first that they had just stayed in their bliss state till they starved, but I suppose RTD wanted something so fast that the undercity couldn't be warned.

Apparently John Simms is to play the Master.

The Doctor said he was the cause when he was talking to the captured Dalek in S1.

Re the Master, I found this report (http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2001320029-2007040780,00.html) but it is the Sun. :-P

I have yet to see anyone do "The Master" as well as Roger Delgardo.

Caught the Dr Who Confidential afterwards. David Tennant SERIOUSLY loved the kittens especially one he bonded with. A certain mostly tortie with touches of white. So much so he wanted to acquire ?her?.
I had a mental image of him trying to sidle out with a kitten in his pocket!
The run down on it was fairly good except for some of them couldn't say enough in praise of Russel T - a bit too sycophantic.
Other than that it was entertaining.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-04-15 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, they should have let him!

I imagine never arguing with RTD would be a job requisite.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2007-04-15 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm watching it at the moment, love the kittens :0)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-04-15 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
So did Tennant; he wanted to adopt one. :-)

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2007-04-16 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
And for once I'm not the last one on my flist to see it.

Definitely not; I didn't get the chance to watch it until just now. I thought I was going to die of impatience. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-04-16 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
And wasn't it fun? I'm not sure why New (New New New New New...) York is full of British eccentrics, but they were wonderful.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2007-04-16 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
It was, indeed, fun, and they were, indeed, wonderful. :)

I didn't see it until the early hours of Monday, and I'm not sure I really did then, as I kept falling asleep every few minutes, then waking up and having to rewind until I got to something that seemed vaguely familiar. I was just about awake enough to realise that the Macra were vaguely familiar too, though it wasn't until daylight that I realised [livejournal.com profile] altariel had helpfully briefed us on The Macra Terror (http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/macraterror/) a fortnight earlier.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-04-16 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
And did I hear it right: the motorway AI was called Sally Kalypso? :-)
