Other people's icons

Doing that icon meme yesterday reminded me of some excellent ones I've seen in my LJ travels. None of them are mine, so I can't offer them to anyone, sorry. Warning: most are animated, but they're there because I think the animation's really well done.

Escher, Che Groucho, a twisty maze, and Hello Cthulhu

Trying to give a damn. I've seen this one around a lot, but I still think it's clever.

Two grey cats I'd like to nick (they both remind me of Claudia) but my ethics prevent me. Maybe I'll draw her, or take a picture of the plate I painted her and Tessa on last year and iconise it.
OTOH I found these two separately and about six months apart, yet they seem to be by the same artist and of the same cat. Is it a well-known fictional character and therefore available for me to find and make my own icons of?

Planets! I found this one recently and I love it for being about astronomy (well, planetonomy) and having excellent timing.

Those are some cool icons. I'm especially impressed by the Escher one.

I have an Escher book and that one's in it.

Ditto. I adore Escher. It's very cool to see him animated.

Yeah, I saved the Escher and the planet ones - along with a heap of others I'll never use - simply for the joy of looking at them :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-03-04 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I save them too. :-)

Oh, these are fantastic.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-03-04 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
They are. I've been seriously tempted to use them, but I feel I ought to have only icons I've made or taken from someone who offered them.

Yep, me too. I've saved at least one somewhere that I'd never use cuz it wouldn't be right. It's an animated one where a little stick figure guy notices the 'x' of a non-working icon and prods it with a long stick until the picture appears. Wonder where I put it...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-03-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Post it in a comment; I'd like to see that.

If I could find it, I would. I had saved it to ORmAC, but she's dying and I've pulled data from her in random chunks of assorted folders. It's going to take a while to sort out what I can transfer to the new mac later.

I especially love the Escher and the Hellow Cthulhu. That Escher one makes me wonder what kind of art we would have seen if he'd lived in the age of CGI.

I love his stuff, including those that aren't patterns or optical illusions. I particularly like the ones of watery reflections I have in a book of his work. [googles] Here they are (http://www.mathartfun.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/EscherPosters3.html). Scroll down for 'three worlds' and 'puddle', even though they're small versions.

Thanks for the link. I love Escher too. I actually have the top (waterfall) image as a completed puzzle. I also have a puzzle of "Metamorphose" that's been through about three moves with me, but I somehow lost track of it in my latest move. I hope it's at my parents' house somewhere...

These are what I aspire to be able to do and probably never will. The planet one is the one I would grab and use if I could quiet my conscience sufficiently.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-03-04 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too, but I can't.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2007-03-04 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh. The maze is impressive; I hadn't realized you could do that much within the file size limitation. And I just realized that the planet one is based on the llama song, which makes it all the funnier. And hypnotic. Must... look... away... now...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-03-04 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you have to sing along with it. :-)

The maze one has lots of frames but they're very simple and in B&W. So effective though.
