Serenity

Well, I saw Serenity, not that it was even the same ship. I should have gone with my first instincts.

As soon as I heard there were reavers, I didn't want to go. But people said no, it's not that bad. It's shiny. People leave with smiles on their faces. Huh.

Then I suspected from a careless comment in someone's LJ that they were going to kill at least one crewmember. I was afraid it would be one of my favourites. I was right.

And what's with all the planets and moons being in one solar system, just to name one massive nit-pick? [tears at hair] SF doesn't mean 'make up the science'. Let's have another pick, shall we: fist-fights between severely-wounded people that go on forever? Really, it doesn't take that much to knock out or disable a person. I will give them points for not dropping the operative through the huge SF-cliche fan though.

There were some very good Jaynisms and other witty moments but I'm still feeling let down. I should have just stuck with the series.

aww, sorry it didn't live up :0( no, it wasn't as good as the series, but I found it entertaining enough, and suitably funny.

I alsways find it hard to believe injured people can continue to fight. One small injury and I'd be incapable

I imagine adrenaline can take you some way, but I've read that the violence people walk away from in films is dangerously unrealistic. People can't take that sort of punishment, but young and foolish male viewers are led to believe they can.

Yeah, well, I did think yesterday that it wouldn't have been my first suggestion for your anniversary, but you'd already booked by then, and my saying that would have been even more of a spoiler than my previous remark about whether you should go.

Yeah well, I wavered but certain people's good reviews swayed me. Eh; the food was excellent and we're going out to have Thai on our proper anniversary on Wednesday. :-)

Next film I want to see: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and then there's Harry Potter and Narnia. Yay!

I won't comment on the first two paragraphs cause you're right.

But as to the science being wrong, nothing in the movie contradicts anything in the series and there's loverly additional background in the Roleplaying game (approved by Joss as Canon) that make it all very believable.

I loved the operative and I'm still numb about the death but I felt the movie was a wonderful continuation of the series and one of the best movies I've seen.

Not that I've seen either, film not contradicting series won't make up for contradicting physics, which is what [livejournal.com profile] vilakins appears to be complaining about.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-11-12 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'd have liked it a lot more if I hadn't seen the series. It wasn't a good continuation because it contradicted much that was in the series and the resolution, though satisfying in some ways, disappointed in others. I will do a fuller post.

But people said no, it's not that bad. It's shiny. People leave with smiles on their faces.

Note that I did not say this...

And what's with all the planets and moons being in one solar system, just to name one massive nit-pick?

They sort of implied this in the series, but left enough wiggle room to wave it away, which I most definitely did. It was annoying that they went and made it explicit here, yeah. Joss Whedon is quite forthright about knowing pretty much zip about science and mostly for Firefly, it doesn't really matter because there's not much science in the show, anyway. But...

Anyway, I'm sorry you didn't like it. Not entirely surprised, but sorry. My own weird mixed feelings you already know about, but overall I did enjoy it a lot, taken on its own.

I'd have liked it a lot more as a standalone film as I wouldn't have invested much in the characters and I could have just enjoyed [most of] the action.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2005-11-12 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense to me.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-11-12 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I've posted more thoughts now I've had time to marshal them. Actually, if it had been a standalone film, most of the characters weren't developed enough to mean much to me and I just could have sat back and enjoyed the ride (except for the reaver bits where I couldn't look). :-P

As I believe I mentioned on my blog, the movie really works best for me if I take it, weirdly enough, as a very high-budget piece of fan fiction. This isn't what really happened to those characters, it's just a what-if adventure using them. (Hey, sometimes I gotta come up with creative ways to have my cake and eat it... :))

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-11-12 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can do that. I think. :-)
