Nerd alert

A pity they didn't ask about how the very term 'friends' affects people's reactions to friending and de-friending. I think 'reads' and 'read by' would be so much better.

And [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v wanted to see a picture of me in my pilot's hat (I hesitate to call it a flying helmet as it's so soft), so here it is if anyone else is interested.

as I am very keen on the connections made by the wonderful world of the internet, I would rather they called it something less emotive like connected or linked to/by etc. I too think friends is the wrong word. There are people on my list I do count as friends, but there are others that are just connections I've made.

I love the hat, btw. It's very you

[identity profile] hafren.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
what she said.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Greg said I look like a flapper.

'Friends' is just so emotively charged. I don't mind who reads my LJ; I think it's strange when people object to others 'friending' / reading them.

Oooh, what a nifty hat!

...I owe you a picspam!

Heck, why don't I do that now...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Go on then!

Off to bed now though.

I'm stalled on it through technichal difficulties, sadly. Soon, dammit, soon. Soon as I can get windows explorer to STOP CRASHING...

Percussive maintenance!

Ooooh, trust me, if I thought that would work....

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
[laughs] Is that 'cool' or a Doctor's companion?

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Intended as in cool, but I dare say that the other might fit too. :)
ext_6322: (Ace)

[identity profile] kalypso-v.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I thought it was combining cool with a flying ace!

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
If it was, it was only subconsciously.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You should have claimed a triple hit!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought so too, hence the ace Tarrant icon I used. It was a very appropriate comment that hit multiple targets.

Is yours from 'The Curse of Fenrick' if I've got the title right? It's where they're outside leaning against the hut, right? Apparently it was freezing cold and they had to pretend it was summer.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I think that not asking about the terminology was a missed opportunity.

Nice hat!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

And there were a lot of questions to which the answer was "not applicable" if you'd never defriended anyone, so I wasn't quite sure how to answer those. I went for Neutral in the end.

[identity profile] neneithel.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. I think I've only ever defriended one person. I like the term friend though. I do get very fond of all the brilliant people whose journals I read. I only took a defriending personally when a friend pretty much cut me off altogether and being removed from her friend list felt like the final end to our friendship. Fortunately, it wasn't. Mostly I'm just very grateful that people want to read my journals. I regard being on anyone's friend list as a great compliment and I understand that I may get removed because of lack of space or simply because the reader has lost interest in the journal.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I regard most of my flist as friends too, but communities are different.

I love your B7 character LJs! I've friended them all as Vila because I read all the in-character stuff as him (we're logged into different browsers) so he can answer in character. He can't respond to ones like Anna and Carnell because he shouldn't know about them, but I do read them and enjoy them very much.

Avon was extra good about Horizon. You do them all well. More Gan, she asks hopefully? ;-)

[identity profile] matildabj.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Great hat! It really suits you.

And yes, for a long time I had issues with the term 'friend' and 'defriend'. I think I've mostly got over it now.

That's a cute hat. I'm glad you survived the friend's visit. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I don't know how mothers do it, but I knew I wasn't cut out for that.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Aviator's cap? It's definitely you. Now you need the goggles, and a silk scarf imprinted with a map of the terrain you'll be flying over, and you'll be all set. :^) Captain Nico!! Sounds good to me. :^)

[identity profile] kerr-avon.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
it's a flying helmet! I remembered a catalog I used to receive and looked them up on the web.

This Flying Helmet is quite similar to yours.

And here's the Scarf that would make it even cooler.

Oh, boy. Thunder. Bye!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a white silk scarf! And big sunglasses, go me!

Yes, mine is almost exactly like that flying helmet, and it's even distressed leather. It seems odd to call something so soft a helmet though.

You are Jayne!

[identity profile] communicator.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry, I was so excited I forgot to say - agree about the friends - and you look cute :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, and LOL at the Jayne bit. His has a peak though; I think it's a US humter's hat. An American deerstalker.

I agree with you about the "friends" term. I have not met anyone on my friends list in the flesh. Judging by your posts, some of you I feel I would get on with quite well if we met, others I feel would be an irritation (and I would irritate them), others I'm not sure about. All are on my list because you have interesting things to say, even when I disagree with it.

And the hat looks warm and comfy.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly: it's a reading list. Those I have met in the flesh I've liked a lot; all of them B7 fans I encountered at or after Star One 2004.

I may wear it today. It's very windy outside and the barometer says rain, a combo I loathe.

[identity profile] neneithel.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That hat is so perfect for you. Looks like it was made for you.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I knew it was mine as soon as I saw it. :-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2005-09-28 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Lovely hat - now where's your plane? (or spaceship) ;-)

That's a very cozy looking hat :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
It is! Lovely soft leather lined with sheepskin. Pity it's got warm again.
