Two things found on [livejournal.com profile] linguaphiles today:

Someone asked why only certain colours turn up in surnames (because they're usually based on personal appearance or where an ancestor lived) but this answer was interesting. I see that Blake comes up under both 'black' and 'white'. [snigger] How appropriate.
