I'm back!

I'm back. Yeah, I was one of those with madcow disease.

Good: My LJ is back and, as far as I can tell, intact.
Bad: I didn't realise just how addicted I was to it.

Bad: The cut on my leg I kept hoping would get better got so infected I had to see a doctor and go onto antibiotics.
Good: Blake's 7 season 2, The Peacekeeper Wars, and Julius Caesar are on their way from two different countries.
Bad: I don't have a job and I lust after Red Dwarf season five and a Corgi Starbug
Good: I have a 2-3 week contract starting on Friday.
Bad: It's on the other side of the Harbour Bridge again--Albany. Oh joy. 45-minute commutes if there are no traffic problems.
Good: [livejournal.com profile] quarryquest rang me this morning and told me about the B7 cast reunion in the weekend. Michael Keating remembered me and asked after me(!!!) and [livejournal.com profile] quarryquest took a picture of him raising his glass to me! Eee! Can't wait to see it.

[Edit]: More that's good: I got a Blakathon assignment which looks just my thing! Yay!

Eeee!:) Joy on the new job and Mike! Eee!

...madcow disease.

Hee! LJD!

Yay for the job. Boo for the commute. The sooner we get viable matter transporters, the better.

But then no one would ever manage their 10,000 paces a day! If I have a really productive day's work here, I'm struggling to reach 2,000.

Ah, but by that time, Science will have eliminated the need to exercise ;)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I know! Eee!

Oh, I so wish I could see him again. I wanted to meet him originally because he played Vila, but now I have, it's because he's such a lovely, sweet, and utterly charming man.

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
The squeeness:). I have the same thing with Tufty, *sigh*:). I bet MK would sweep me off my feet as well, though:).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
No, the idea of those terrifies me. What if it kills you the first time, and for ever afterwards you're just a copy? Small flaws would creep in as you get copes of copies of copies. Hmm, could explain the distorted Avon and Vila in season 4!

Why do we have to work in offices anyway? It plays havoc with traffic, you're often forced into close proximity with unpleasant people, parking's a nightmare, and there's always someone spreading something infectious. I could do a lot of my work from home if suits thought a bit more laterally. Well, there is the lure of LJ.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he would! He'd be irresistible, and a perfect gentleman with it!

I dare you to write that :) (Douglas Adams did come up with the idea that being teleported was "unpleasantly like being drunk.")

Yeah, I'd much rather work from home. Tricky to set up a fully featured biochem lab in the spare bedroom, though, which is another reason why I'm looking for a new direction.

Anyway, in the Bright New Future where we do have matter transporters, nobody will need to work ;)

I dare you to write that

I've considered it, but I don't like them all being dead. :-( I have another version in which Servalan gets hold of Slave PGP (they escaped) and she reconstructs Avon from the last time the teleport was used, except that he doesn't have a soul. (Not that S4 Avon's one was much to write home about.) But I didn't know where to go with golem-Avon.

And I love that 'drunk' line--like a glass of water.

nobody will need to work

In the past, that's what they thought now would be like, and look--we work longer and longer hours. Not me though. I jumped that ship so now I work regular hours and have gaps between contracts (though the last one was a bit too long). [sigh] I don't see a time when people won't have to work. They're cheaper than robots.

Meep! Who did he have the Moment of Perfect Happiness with?

Yay for the goods ultimately outweighing the bads!

Me, I love the idea of matter transmission, just because I love going places but hate travelling, if you know what I mean. But I'd have to be convinced it was 100% accurate. The thing about "small errors" in copying actually makes me think of Farscape's "Eat Me." Yikes!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I had to google that to understand it--I'm still in Buffy season 1. :-( Is Avon capable of one? Hmm, maybe while contemplating a very large bank balance.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, true! That wasn't an influence though: I had the teleport-as-copier conversation a couple of years ago with another friend. I'll never use the idea though, so go ahead if you want to play with it.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, I'd rather see your take on it, to be honest. :) Writing about "transporter" effects always feels too Trekkish to me, somehow, for my brain to want to apply it to other universes, even when it's appropriate.

Yeah, the more we can do, the more they expect us to do. I've seen a few books and articles about that discuss this trend, so maybe there will be a backlash.

Which reminds me. I must do my crack_van rec and apparently it's meant to be a crossover this time. B7/ST:TOS!

(Third time lucky.)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry about the reposts. I have a hell of a headache (not a migraine) and I really want to be asleep.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Aww. Can you go and get some sleep? Sleep is a good thing.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I did have a nap but Claudia (AKA the thug) jumped on me and woke me up.

I remember reading a really creepy SF story about teleport-as-copier-with-small-errors, and all the nay-sayers had been ignored as telephobics, and by the time the errors were gross enough to be noticed, civilization collapsed.
Very sad story.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch. And if the people were copies, they got killed first time though. :-( I would be a telephobe.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Is this a good time to mention that my Vila is afraid of cows? :-D

And how cool is it that MK remembered you! And you were worried about meeting him, you silly.

I will join you in the Red Dwarf lust, and hope that your leg heals quickly. And yay for everybody being back on LJ.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-17 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect Vila's afraid of anything large that doesn't also look cuddly; I can imagine him trying to make friends with a tiger. But why cows in particular?

Everyone was right--MK was just lovely.

And my leg already looks better. :-)

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2005-01-18 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
But why cows in particular?

Oh, you know, some times you're just writing away and something pops out that you don't expect. Actually, it's my BtVS crossover Vila, and it stems from a conversation he had with Xander, followed by a traumatic encounter with a vampire; now he has nightmares about vampire cows trying to eat him, poor baby.

And my leg already looks better.

Excellent! I hope the trend continues. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-18 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, poor Vila. I just started watching Buffy (we possess S1 and S2 and have bids on S3-S6) but I'll be able to enjoy those crossovers soon.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2005-01-19 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
And to write some, I hope. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2005-01-19 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
[whimper] I have so many B7 stories queued up to be written!
