Stargate SG1 news

You probably knew this but I just saw on an SF mailing lists here that:

SCI FI Channel confirmed that Farscape star Ben Browder will join the cast of Stargate SG-1 in the show's upcoming ninth season; no information on Browder's role was available. Meanwhile, the show's producer, MGM, is still working on a deal to bring back SG-1 star Richard Dean Anderson (General O'Neill) in some capacity.
Eh? That's a massive spoiler. They got rid of O'Neill? Last I saw of him, he was frozen in the Lost City, and he was still a colonel. We've only had up to the end of season 7 here--please don't tell me what happens. Damn. I'll miss his humour--that's what sucked me in.

John Crichton at SG1 would be a lot of fun, but I'm sure Ben Browder will make an effort play his new character differently.

If he stays frozen they CAN bring him back in some capacity...drinks dispenser.

I hate to think what they'd be dispensed from!

I'm missing a whole season here; I hope they show it soon so I can catch up.

They didn't get rid of O'Neill. I suspect this is a deal so they don't have to - it sounds from that like he wants to move on.

Oh? I don't follow the fandom at all, just watch the show and enjoy it when it's on here. I hope they show season 8 soon. There's almost nothing decent on TV now, esp SF. Well, except for Firefly reruns but I'd rather watch my DVDs in the right order.

I don't really follow SG1, either - I watched re-runs in Ireland, but that's about it. But my impression is just that it's his company's show, and, as the Big-Name Stars do, he's sort of thinking of minimizing involvement to production.

I wouldn't count on it. They imported another Farscape lead for a guest role last night, and basically imported the Farscape character in toto - they hardly even bothered to change the costume. (You can probably deduce from that that it wasn't Rygel or D'Argo.)

My contempt for this show grows by the week, and I really think I'll have to stop watching.

I've only seen up to the end of S7 but I still like it. However a large part of that is O'Neill's humour. It annoys me a lot that when they meet a culture that has evolved separately for centuries or even millennia that they all speak English.

Um ... I'm guessing Claudia Black? who was it? [looks at your icon] Surely not Chiana! Chiana has such a distinctive way of speaking and moving, it would break any suspension of disbelief of Gigi Edglely did that on another show.

It was indeed Claudia. But I've either 49 or 50 icons at present, so blowing one on Aeryn for a one-off comment seemed a bit extravagant.

O'Neill apparently said he wanted to put in fewer days a week, so they've rejigged things this season so he has less to do. In recent weeks, however, everyone seems to be getting time off; Claudia's episode had a little O'Neill but no Carter or Teal'c, whereas last week's had a little O'Neill but no Jackson. This may be to do with guesting on Atlantis - something was said about sending Daniel there, so maybe the two episodes were supposed to be happening at the same time. But I no longer concentrate very hard on what's happening and, as the first few weeks of Atlantis clashed with The West Wing, I haven't even bothered to start watching that.

Yeah, I thought Claudia Black was the most likely to be her FS character yet still fit in.

I don't even know what 'Atlantis' is!

It's a spin-off. At the end of the last season you've seen, they got some clue or other about the Lost City, and I think it had something to do with that, though as I haven't been watching I'm a bit vague. Basically, they sent off an expedition, including that blonde diplomat they brought in to replace Hammond in the season finale, except that she's now been recast as a brunette, to look for the Lost City somewhere or other, with a new set of friendly aliens (or maybe they're more friendly humans moved centuries earlier, I don't know) and a new set of alien baddies. At first, they lost contact with the base on Earth (I think they may be in another galaxy they can't reach except by Stargate even in their souped up ship), but now they seem to have re-established the link so they can go and guest a bit. I remember there was some talk of Adam Baldwin getting a part in it, and I suppose I would have watched if he had, but he didn't.

Ah. Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for it then. There's nothing on TV right now but Firefly reruns and I prefer my DVDs.

And the DVDs for Farscape S4 came today!

Hurrah! So you've almost caught up with us!

We're pretty short of anything to watch just now, too. Friends tell me I should have been watching the remake of Battlestar Galactica. I did catch an episode when I was staying with a friend in London last week, who gave me a running commentary on who everyone was. It looked quite interesting so maybe I'll watch out for a repeat showing.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] nickeyb says The Lost is wonderful, but it hasn't turned up on UK television yet.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-22 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
What's that about?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-22 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Battlestar Galactica! It would have to be better than the original, but I have heard good things about it. Mind you, the only bits of the original I saw were unintentionally funny. (As a ship is about to crash, "Do you realise the gravity of the situation?") That same ep was enlivened by a NY taxi-driver who looked like Ronald Reagan. :-P

My understanding is that they've made the characters more complex, and some of them have changed genders. I don't think I ever saw the original, but it sounded a bit tacky... This looked OK on my brief viewing.

The Lost... Um, I've forgotten most of what she said. I had a vague impression of some people who were, well, lost...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-22 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
From the bits I saw once, the original BG was definitely tacky. I must look out for the remake. As I never really watched it, I won't mind any changes they've made.

I do hope we get something new, esp SF, on TV soon.
