Cool links

Brrrr. It's gone from hot and muggy summer back to early spring: wet and cold.

Anyway, here are a couple of links I liked which are a different sort of cool.

This guy colours in his kids' drawings while on business flights. It's amazing what he can do with them. I'd love to see more.

And here are the 12 types of Doctor Who fan. I'm not so certain about this one. I don't recognise the first type, but number 2 and 3, the Tennant and Smith fans, made me laugh. As for the fanfic writer, I wouldn't be surprised if there are several stories like that out there. But what have people got against Martha Jones? I know I'm missing out on the Capaldi sweary jokes because I've never seen The Thick of It.

Finally, building guides for Lego tree ornaments; scroll down a little for the SF ones which include a TARDIS, Death Star, Millennium Falcon, and tie fighter. Click on them to see the building guides if you're likely to have the Lego to make one. :-)

OOoh, the colored in children's drawings are amazing.

Yay to all of those!

I like Martha. I feel like more could have been done with her and I'm not entirely happy with the story she did get but she was wonderful at times. I was inclined to support her from the start when she was not only intelligent and useful, but constantly being made aware that no matter what she did she would never be a substitute for <3!!!ROSE!!!<3

The "12 types" seem a bit nerd-bashing to me (i.e. getting too involved, in whatever way, is "not cool"), but still, playing with stereotypes can be fun ("fan theorist" is probably the closest one to me...) I can certainly think of a few B7 ones as well: the B/A romantic; the moral theorist ("Terrorists or freedom fighters!?"); the Avon objectifier; the overprotective Vila fan... ;-)

The coloured drawings are ingenious!

Talking of cool links, have you seen the warp drive news?

Yeah, maybe the Avon one is more of a fanfiction pet peeve, really... I'm the Vila fan too, and also the theorist (always the theorist!) and probably others that I don't realise. While I tend to be very critical of Blake I hope I don't quite qualify as a "hater" (I do find him one of the most fascinating characters of the show after all, and I think the show's downward turn after S2 had a lot to do with GT leaving.) But yeah, the anti-B/A fan should probably be a category as well...

Come to think of it, "fans that prefer S4" could be yet another (if somewhat mysterious to me.)

Yes! What does happen to objects in the warped zone!? Even though I know that all the hyped "science fiction come true" science news like that are usually very, very far from becoming realised (not in my lifetime, if at all) I always find it heartening that someone is actually working on them, nonetheless...

Those drawings made me totally smile :)

They're fantastic aren't they!

That Doctor Who fan thing is kind of hilarious. I think I qualify as a few of those. The good ones, obviously. :)

I thought I was the Matt Smith girl. Not the person with all the TARDIS graphics, were you?

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2013-12-04 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not remotely capable of drawing up those kinds of graphics, but I am that sort of fan, a little bit. Also the Classic Who fan, although I try not to be too obnoxious about it. And, of course, I actually did like Martha Jones!

I can't be a classic fan; I don't even know what Zarbi are!

Me too!

I suppose they are one of the more obscure classic series aliens. :)

Those drawings are superb.

They are! It's amazing how adding colour and 3D effects changes them!

Wow, I LOVE the drawings!

The DW piece -- well, frankly, this is how it comes across to me: "Doctor Who is for children. Always has been, always will be. Everyone else who gets passionate about it is ridiculous and self-delusional, and I'm going to show how clever I am by mocking them." Possibly with a subtext of: "After all this stupid fuss about the annversary, all the other Intelligent Adults who are just as tired of it as I am have earned a really good, well-deserved cruel laugh at their expense. Maybe then all these annoying, childish fans will learn their lesson and STFU about this kids' show."

As you can see, I've gotten rather tired of fandom-bashing, especially by people who actually live in (and make money from) one section of fandom but are still snotty about other segments.

So I've closed that tab and gone back to enjoying the amazing artwork!

I also enjoyed Martha. I think the Martha-hate was probably a reflex from Rose fans, and the rawness had faded with time. It's reminiscent of the Jonas-hating Daniel fans from Stargate.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-12-04 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the end bit's annoying, but I had to smile at some of them, esp the Tennant fan. [ducks] Myself, I don't think it's for children at all these days; too complex and sometimes dark. though I'm sure they enjoy it too.

Oy, really? Poor Martha. I think she was great.

The childrens“ coloured drawings are fantastic! These Cats in Love I love!!!!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-12-04 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! I love how they hover so joyfully.

[identity profile] nautile26.livejournal.com 2013-12-04 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, those drawings! What a great way to use up travel time. Certainly some artistic talent in that family. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-12-04 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree; the kids did some very good artwork for their ages.
