Earthquake in Wellington

There's been a strong earthquake centred in Cook Strait which has shaken Wellington pretty badly and done some damage. A cluster of quakes have hit in the last few days but this one is the strongest so far. A bit of a worry after Christchurch.

Wellington is a lovely and very liveable city. When I lived there though I experienced quite a few quakes, and that was the main reason I decided to come to Auckland when I got back from overseas. Let's just hope the dormant volcano field doesn't fire up.

I hope there's nothing more serious to come in the chain, but I'm glad you're well away from it.

We were on the tail end of it, and I spent the evening texting and calling family and friends closer to the business. Here's hoping that it's done its dash now. I ended up changing an appt rather than driving in to the city. With no trains, the roads may well be a madhouse, and I don't fancy being stuck there if the cycle isn't quite finished yet.

Oh, hate to hear that.

We're fine but I'm worried about Wellington. We always expected The Big One to hit there (and I used to work right on the fault line) but hopefully this is relieving the pressure.

I hope you and everyone there remain safe!

We're fine; we didn't feel a thing up here. We get the occasional quake but it's a whole other system.

Dear, this is not good news. I take it you and yours are all right? Living on an unstable ground is scary...go back to sleep, volcano!!!!

No worries; we're fine; we didn't feel a thing up here. We get the occasional quake but it's a different system.

I hope there were no casualties. Keep safe!

I heard four people were injured, two of them fairly slightly. People were evacuated from badly damaged homes though.

A lot of a worry...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-07-22 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Wellington's where we always expected the Big One to hit; hopefully the pressure's being relieved by all these quakes.

Stay safe, you.

We're fine! We get the occasional quake but it's a whole other system up here and we're way too far away to feel anything.

[Edit] I love your icon! Though I hear it's pretty tropical here right now. :-)

Here's hoping there aren't any more...

A colleague was there today (her course was cancelled) and she emailed back from "shaky Wellington" so I suppose the shocks were still continuing.

Constant aftershocks would stress me out. :( I have a cousin who works in the CBD who had the day off.

Me too.

I'm sort of wishing now that I bought one of the GrabOne deals for emergency packs. Next time I see one, I will.

My best wishes are with Wellington. I loved it there when I visited, and I have a friend who works there. Wishing everyone well.

It's a lovely city!

The damage is nowhere near as bad as Christchurch; most buildings just need some cleaning up. A friend lost all her glass and pottery jugs off her room divider; that sort of thing is quite common/

May the volcanoes long remain dormant.

Ugh, yeah, a bit worrying. As long as it's the Cook St fault and none of the ones under Welly..... after Chch it really makes me anxious thinking about it. I so do not have the fortitude to live through something like that twice in my lifetime. I just hate the not-knowing, that it could happen at ANY time. Enough to drive you mad!
Fingers crosed for Orcland's volcanoes staying dormant too!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-08-07 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! I used to tell people I was from Orcland!
