Earthquake!

Yeah, on top of everything else! I'd just sat down with a cup of tea and the house started shaking and all the tchatchkes and my cup rattling. Greg looked it up and it seems to be a 3.8 not far off, under Mototapu Island.

OK, Christchurch gets more and worse than that, but we're supposed to be volcano country here. Though long may they all lie dormant.

Ack, nobody needs that! I hope it's just a one-off.

Yeah, I still remember the "simulation" at the museum, of what it would be like if there was an eruption.

*hugs*

Wow, the world seems intent on rattling you around lately... o_O

It seems against nature for Auckland to get earthquakes - although admittedly if you ever do get a proper volcano, earthquakes would be one of the first signs.... *insert 'dum-de-dum' sound of doom here*

Many years ago now, Wgtn had a run of quite substantial 5 pointers within a month or so of each other. I was under my desk with great alacrity when one of them happened at work, and I still remember some staff visiting from Ak expressing their heartfelt desire to be back home on relatively stable ground.

Eeek! *fingers crossed the volcanoes continue to sleep*

Eeep! You really are in the wars...

I have to say, I am glad I live in an area where there are almost no natural disasters and even when we get brushed by them (last years fires and floods) they're relatively easy to escape from.

(OTOH, I shouldn't feel too smug, given our spiders and snakes and whatnot...)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-03-21 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'd rather risk those! I could do without the bish fires though.

I felt it too... we don't need quakes in Auckland. :(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-03-21 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
I have to say, who does need 'em?

The universe seems determined to rattle your nerves!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-03-21 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
It can stop now. I'm nervous enough about the international webinar I'm hosting (for the first time) tomorrow.

That's two, as a family we always said things come in threes bad and good. Your bads seem to be getting less personal, the last will probably be a bad thunderstorm.%)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-03-21 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm saying the demise of the aircon is the third one. Fujitsu are replacing it with a better model so that's not so bad, and it's been a bit cooler this week after the rain.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2013-03-17 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's alarming, but I'm glad that there was no real harm done.

"tchatchkes" - that looks like what might happen to a word if all its letters got shaken around by an earthquake and finished up in the wrong order, :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-03-21 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
[grin] It's Yiddish for knick-knacks. They say to blue-tack them down in case but I've never bothered.

Wow. NZ is beautiful but potentially dangerous thanks to its volcanic origin, isn´t it? I hope there won´t be more.
Stay safe!!!!

Well, I'll try!

You're certainly having a time of it! Let's hope there's nothing more now. :-/

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-03-21 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
The aircon broke down a week ago but they're putting in a better model next week (due to a manufacturing fault) so that one;s not that bad.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2013-03-17 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You are really not having a good weekend. I'll be looking out for reports of volcanoes now.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-03-21 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
The paper assured us that we don't have to worry. Auckland has a lot of sensors for early warnings, but I do worry that they'll be early enough for people to actually leave the area, given that there are so few roads out of town. The problems of living on a narrow isthmus.

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2013-03-18 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hope you and the kits are okay. We have a lot of earthquakes, but haven't had one close in a while.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-03-21 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
One of Greg's colleagues said his cat left the house very hurriedly just before, but ours didn't seem to notice. Great warning devices they are! Jasmin needed extra reassurance afterwards though - and after the accident the day before too, oddly enough.
