Accident

It's hardly rained this year. but it did today (and it's greatly needed). However Greg and I were over on the North Shore taking the bicycle he's had for a month back for an adjustment (which is often needed) when it started raining fairly heavily. We were driving down a hill and I was about to say that the road would be really slippery after such a long draught when BANG!

An old guy in a Cadillac coming the other way had oversteered coming round the corner, lost control, crossed the road, hit us on the driver side, and spun us round so we were on the other side of the road facing uphill. I thought someone else would hit us but the people behind the old chap acted quickly and drove between us--and were kind enough to stay till the police arrived and act as witnesses. There was also an ambulance though Greg and I were just shaken; the old guy was still in it when we left. His big heavy car was hardly damaged--just a slightly damaged bumper, not even a light broken--but he was pretty shocked. He also admitted losing control and we both have the same insurance company so that's good, but...

The whole driver's side of Greg's car is smashed in and the window shattered, putting glass right over on my side; though I didn't feel any hitting me, it must have. I'm grateful modern glass shatters into little bits rather than shards. So that's the second car Greg's had written off (as I suspect this one is) after someone else ran into him. I'm not sure he's going to replace it yet, probably continuing to bike to work, which he's been doing, or taking a bus.

Anyway the tow guy dropped us and the bike off at the cycle place and I tested a couple of cycles there though I was still feeing a bit shaky. I'm meant to get tax back next month so I may order one then, a smaller one than the model Greg has, then I can bike to work too, buses not being an option.

Then we got a taxi back, driven by a very nice Macedonian guy who used to be in IT; Greg and he had a great East European convo.

Man, I still feel a bit odd. It was all so sudden.

Not surprised you're feeling shaky.
Relieved that you're unhurt.

Hug.

Oh, my goodness! Yes, that would be a shock - take care of yourselves.

Relieved that you're both safe and that the insurance should be OK, but it's still not an experience you'd wish on anyone. I suppose this is when they recommend hot sweet drinks... I like the sound of the helpful drivers who acted to protect you. Hope you can get a good rest on Sunday.

Hugs! I'm so glad you're both all right! That sounded absolutely terrifying.

I'd like to hear about your bike if you get one :o)

!

So glad to hear you escaped and are able to walk. It's such a horrendous experience to have.

Please, please get yourself to someone who can give you a thorough medical asap. In my experience ambulances tend to concentrate on the immediate injuries and may miss things that create problems for you later down the line.

Take some time to take care of yourself.

I'm glad you weren't hurt.

Auckland isn't exactly flat - how do you find biking in all the hills?

*HUGS* I'm having sympathetic shakes just reading about it! Take it easy! I'm glad you and Greg were only shaken, not stirred!

Late to the news, but very glad that you guys are okay.

Eeep!

That sort of thing always leaves you feeling a bit shaken, I find, even if the damage is a lot more minor than that. I'm just glad you're both OK; it sounds like it could have been a lot worse.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that. How horrible for you both!

Am glad you weren't injured. It's a shame about the car. :(

oh wow, I hope you are recovering! That's the thing with accidents, one moment everything is okay and then wham...it's not! I guess on the positive side you'll get more exercise, but also summer is departing and winter will be slowly descending.

[identity profile] quabazaa.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Omg I'm just glad you guys are ok. It is so so scary how fast it can happen. It makes me a little shaky just thinking about it, so I'm sure you'll feel a bit odd for a while. My brother had a similar incident with a bus running into him and caving in his driver door the other month, and it's rather terrifying to think it could have been much worse. Crashes, even when they don't result in injuries, are always super shocking. <3 *hugs*

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yikes, that's so scary. So SO glad you're all okay, though. Hope there isn't any soreness or anything tomorrow, etc. from whiplash. So scary and unreal. D:

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's very nasty, but I'm relieved that it wasn't any worse. I guess that you could do with some *hugs*

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
I feel for you, I have had a similar, accident though not nearly so bad, the van was going at walking pace and all I ended up with was a dented side door. The van was pulling out of a side road on to the main road I was driving on, slowly as I was about to turn off into a friends drive. He said he didn't see me, so his insurance paid for the repairs.

Oh, I'm so glad you're okay–hope the old man is okay, too. Take care.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's awful, but thank goodness you are both okay.

{hugs}

Take it easy for a while, though...

Take care of yourself! *hugs*

[identity profile] ideealisme.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my. I am glad you are both safe and well after that experience. Must have been frightening. Take it easy now.

[identity profile] katriona-s.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, no... it sounds so horrible. But I'm really glad that both of you are OK. Please have a good rest and relax!

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks gods you escaped unharmed! I am sorry about your damaged car but of course you and Greg are the most important!
Poor you, I can imagine that shock, it is admirable you were able to think clearly after the accident!
I hope you will be able to deal with a temporary "carless" time.
Biking to work is good, it saves money a lot and keeps you fit. So...I hope all will be well soon again.
*Hugs*

wow, I'm glad you're both OK. It must have been as awful feeling when it happened, no wonder you're still shaken up. Relax as much as you can this weekend.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that you're both fundamentally unhurt. That kind of thing really is a shock though. Hug your cats and eat chocolate.

[identity profile] threeoutside.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! You're not hurt! Boo! The shock, fear, and *damned inconvenience*!!!

I couldn't read your post fast enough after the heading - I was so scared you or Greg were hurt! I'm so glad you're not. I think hugging cats and eating chocolate is ENTIRELY called for! And hot baths for any undetected muscle strain.

Aw, I'm sorry - very glad you're okay though! And it does shake you up; even the smallest accident really does seem to result in shock, so take care of yuourselves. ♥

[identity profile] green-maia.livejournal.com 2013-03-16 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That kind of thing leaves you deeply shaken. Please take good care of yourselves.

I am so glad you both are okay, and I hope the old man is okay too.

I'm glad you and Greg are okay! I hope the old man wasn't too seriously hurt either.

Watch out for whiplash, sometimes the symptoms take time to develop. Though hopefully the "shaky feel" is just shock.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2013-03-17 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Apart from being shaken, at least you are all ok
