Hamantaschen!

I only seem to bake for festivals these days so I'm a bit out of practice. As a teenager I used to bake every week for my mother who entertained a lot, but it's probably just as well I don't now as I sample the dough and of course am tempted by the finished product.

These have seriously strong vintage Oxford marmalade and Nutella as fillings--separately, I assure you. I'm taking at least half of them to work tomorrow. And so far I've only eaten one! I did eat some dough while I was rolling them out though. I may have a couple with tea after dinner.

One day you should try them together, just think of Terry's chocolate orange.%) I'm like you I would bake every weekend while my parents were alive but baking for one is a serious danger to my weight.

Chocolate and orange are great together, but chocolate/hazelnut with strong marmalade? Not really sure.

Exactly.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2013-02-24 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yes before I would bake them I would mix a little together on a piece of bread. The Nuttella filling would be my favourite.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-02-26 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
I took them to work and my colleagues liked the marmalade best. They're pretty much equally delicious to me. :-) The marmalade ones go softer; the nutella ones stay crisp; both are yummy.

Those look delicious!

And they were!

Ohhhhhh, yummmmmm! I know you make them every year and every year they look delicious and I drool!!!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-02-26 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
They are indeed, and how rich or sweet they are depends on the filling. :-) I'll post this year's recipe below for someone who asked for it, if you want it.

Yum! It's a pity e-mail doesn't work on physical objects. Do you put the filling in after or before baking?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-02-26 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
Before; here's how I fold them (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__IP6S4qrDTw/Sa1pTCg2okI/AAAAAAAAB_M/q30qQRiKsug/s1600/hamantaschen+montage.jpg). Then it's 10 minutes in the oven. I'm posting the recipe below for [livejournal.com profile] threeoutside.

Thank goodness pictures aren't fattening.

Happy Festival (It can't be Passover cos we're only a quarter of the way through Lent)

Purim: the story of Esther and how she saved the Jews in Persia from the evil vizier Haman who always wore a three-cornered hat. :-) It's a ripping yarn including a beauty contest!

Far too many festivals involve fattening but utterly delicious food. [eyes Easter eggs in supermarkets and remembers the pancakes she made recently]

Those look delicious! They look like maple seed helicopters - are they supposed? IF so, way cool - I've never seen any food meant to emulate those. Any way to get the recipe? I make a batch of cookies to send to my grand-daughter in California every month so I'm always looking for something new & different...

ETA: Ahhh...I looked up Hamantaschen Images on google and I see they're "tri-cornered hats" - those are cool, too! I had not looked closely enough at your photo.

Thanks for the inspiration!

I use a different dough each year but I think I'll stick with this one.

Ingredients
• 2 eggs
• 2/3 cup sugar
• 1/4 cup canola oil
• 1 tsp orange zest (I used lemon as I had lemons)
• 1 tsp vanilla
• 2 1/4 cups flour
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1/4 tsp salt
• 1 to 5 tsp water (if needed)

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, canola oil, zest and vanilla. Slowly stir the dry ingredients into the wet till a crumbly dough begins to form.
Knead until smooth and slightly tacky to the touch. If it's too dry to form a smooth dough, add water slowly, 1 teaspoon at a time.

Roll out and put into circles with a glass. Add 1/2 tsp filling of choice and fold like this (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__IP6S4qrDTw/Sa1pTCg2okI/AAAAAAAAB_M/q30qQRiKsug/s1600/hamantaschen+montage.jpg). Anything goes: jam (jelly to you), poppy-seed/lemon/honey mix, Nutella...

Bake for 10-12 minutes as 190C / 360F and cool on a wirte rack. They last well in a container; I still have a few left.

The x/x numbers are fractions BTW! So it's two-thirds of a cup of sugar, not 2-3 cups! :-)

I got about 32 of them from that with a fairly standard glass.

[identity profile] threeoutside.livejournal.com 2013-02-26 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's how we write them here, too. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2013-02-27 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted to make sure because / is sometimes used for "or".

[identity profile] threeoutside.livejournal.com 2013-02-27 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
True, as in "either/or."

Look wonderful--baking is not my forte, but I admire those who can.

I only bother a few times a year, for festivals or to take to a party or dinner. Hamantaschen are not that hard (recipe in comment above) but some things like making challah go in the too-hard basket; that I buy.
