A load of bull

I was saying recently to [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 and [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v (who agree with me that astrology is illogical rubbish) that I was the opposite of what I'm supposed to be. I was pretty much right too.

You are 20% Taurus

I agree about astrology. Apart from anything else, my sign changes depending on the publication I'm looking at. So I did the quiz for both my supposed star signs, and came out 60% one and 73% the other. Which adds up to more than 100%. What does that tell you?

That by sheer chance you're a little like those profiles?

I heard about a uni lecturer here who asked his psychology class for their signs, then handed each student a small handout describing them. They were all, "Oh, that is so me!" but it turned out each one had the same handout. It was so general and true of most people, they were able to see themselves in it.

I'd like to see how results from personality tests like Myers-Briggs are distributed across the star signs. I bet each type is spread evenly across each.

The only time I believe in astrology is when it says something good for me and even then I take it with a very large pinch of salt.

Having said that i turn out to be 53% Libra.

Very sensible! Memes have more validity, and that's not much.

I was 33% Taurus. That is, not very!

Which proves my point. :-D

But (to play devil's advocate) a proper astrologer would say that the simple 12-sign division is pretty much rubbish anyway, and you can't draw up a proper chart without precise date/time/place of birth so that you can plot the positions of all the different planets - you could have the Sun in Taurus, but a whole lot of other planets in other houses. A friend did that for me once, as I may have mentioned, and I remember two things about his chart (1) he tried to conceal the bits he didn't agree with (Pluto in somewhere or other signified that I had no sense of humour, apparently), and (2) he said I had a peculiarly high concentration of planets in Aquarius. Which is why it tickled me that that other astrologer knew straight off that I was Aquarian. So on the one hand I don't believe a word of it; on the other, I like the idea that those who do can tell who I am. And I got 53 per cent, but hey, these yes-or-no and no none-of-the-above quizzes are no more reliable than astrology, in my opinion!

Well, they can't tell with me! And I'm not even sure when I was born (10:30 or 11:30 at night, I think) so I can't test that. Actually, what's the thing with birth anyway? If planets and stars have an influence, surely it would be during conception, or when the foetus is forming. And what about Caesarean and induced births, she asks sceptically.

I have a theory that you are more influenced by the season you were born in, than the "star sign". Whilst I think it is all rubbish, I also think I am quite typical for my star sign (leo). But is this because I always celebrated my birthday during summer holidays, was made to feel more special by being abroad and day trips, parties etc, than my brother who with his spring birthday was usually at school on his birthday?
For me my birthday is the highlight of me year, I've never worked on it and my celebrations usually last several days. How typically leo is that?

Lucky you! Mine's in late autumn, not much fun, and I never do much for it, just go out for a meal.

You felt your birthday was special cos you were on holiday? Mine is also August and I felt my birthday was ignored. We were away so no cards or presents from friends or relations on the day and it was too late for them to bother when we returned. I wonder if that's why I can never remember when people's birthdays are?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's mean. I hope you didn't give them presents. I have a friend born on 26 December and he only ever got one present from his rellies, so one year he gave his cousins one jandal (flip-flop / thong) each for Christmas and said they'd get the other one on their birthdays. That cured 'em.

And I think having a birthday on holiday would be lovely: lunch or dinner somewhere exotic, unusual foods, beautiful locations! Much better than sitting a maths exam on it like I did once.
