Yay, holidays!

Here most companies close for two weeks' summer break, so both Greg and I are on holiday from now. It was so hot in here (32C) when I got home, I had to sit outside with a book and a chilled glass of water. At least we won't have to shut the house up most days.

I forgot to say, I heard the first cicada of the summer last week and now they're starting up in earnest; I love that sound. However tropical cyclone Evan is on its way so this weather isn't going to last.

Anyway, happy solstice (whether summer or winter)!

I chose to be on duty this Xmas - and so not unexpectedly, I'm actually going like the clappers because there are the folks who did take their time off. I plan a long weekend some time in Jan or early Feb to make up for it. Enjoy your Xmas break. :-)

Enjoy your time off! It's been hot here too and we're having to pull in any wide-open windows on the side the sudden showers come from, then open them afterwards.

enjoy the weather while it lasts then :0)

Yay! Happy and lovely holidays! mmmmmm...warmth...leaking from a screen a little:-)
No snow here, something between winter and autumn, some freezing. Quite chilly and unpleasant. I have an extra day off, I do my best to warm this big house.
Have a nice day!

It'll be wet enough in a couple of days but I'm hoping for sunshine and cicadas till then. :-)

Hi! It's interesting and nice to hear about your summer now when it is the beginning of mid-winter here! Enjoy your summer holidays!

We always stay home (and maybe take day trips) because almost everyone else goes away and the roads and accommodation (and crowds of kids) are a nightmare. Actually a quiet and much emptier city is rather nice! We'll take a week in March or April when children are back at school and maybe another week later in the year.

Happy solstice to you, too! Man, I think I could use a little summer right now. Or two weeks' off... :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-12-21 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Because most people (and all their kids) are off it's mainly a stay-at-home time for us with occasional day trips, but it's lovely and relaxing with books and hammock and all the seasonal goodies to snack on. I'm about to start Major Pettigrew on your rec. :-)

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2012-12-21 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The idea of things basically shutting down for everybody for two whole weeks is so bizarre and alien to me, America being the workoholic country it is. But, man, that sounds nice.

And, yay, I hope you like Major Pettigrew as much as I did!

I'm sure I will! It looks charming and an impressive first novel, they say. After that I have SF, fantasy, and 20s detection waiting for me.

I don't mind it being the minimum two weeks as there are 4 statutory holidays in there so I only use 6 of my 20 days vacation, and frankly, after learning one role (production analyst) at the huge global drink company then going straight into another (social and digital media, IT support, and now apparently all the orders and accounting stuff as that person is unexpectedly retiring in two weeks) I am so ready for a break!

\0/ Yay! We finished off the work year yesterday too, with a very pleasant lunch at a restaurant at The Rocks. Back up the coast now and we have until January 2 before we start again. The weather's a little grey, but it's warm and not too humid, so that's good. Enjoy your break. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-12-22 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's grey and humid here too and I suspect the rain's on its way. I don't go back till the 7th which is a nice break. And I need it!

Enjoy your holiday!

Two weeks? Two weeks? Drat. I knew NZ was more civilised in many ways, but not in that one. (I'm on two weeks holiday now because I asked for the second week, not because the bosses were sensible.)

Merry whathaveyou to you also.

Actually some places (factories, many lawyers(!) and accountants) close for longer which I'd hate. I like the break but I prefer my real holidays when I want to take them, when the weather is a lot more settled and kids are back in school.

My bosses are lawyers, but I can't see them closing for longer, no. I take the point about the kids, although school holidays tend to make my bus commute to work less exasperating, especially if I miss my preferred bus and have to catch the next one (which seems to be a de facto school bus for some parts of its route).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-12-25 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, exactly! Education-related traffic make up about 40% of Auckland's traffic, so I'd rather work and take advantage of that and go away at other times.

I don't know why some places close for so long. It seems traditional in some professions but I've noticed most retail businesses and cafes etc keep going to my relief.

Sorry, double post. LJ glitched, and when I refreshed the screen I found I'd repeated myself.
