Catch up with stuff

I don't think I've posted for weeks, but hey, I haven't had much to say.

We have a relative staying with us for what was meant to be a few days till she found a flat, but she's very picky and is still here almost two months later. She's not that much trouble, being a fellow introvert, but it means I have to cook a decent meal each night, no heating up samosas or having soup and toast more than once a week, and I have to do more housework than usual. Which is probably a good thing. But damn, I miss being able to come home and just blob out.

I haven't been much good at writing for picowrimo either and I've just realised that next month is art month and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to manage it what with a full-time job and a boarder.

I've also been meaning to post photos but I have to find somewhere other than LJ's crapbook to host them. Maybe Photobucket for photos and Flickr for art?

At least we're past the shortest day, yay, but just in the last week we've had one of the frighteningly intense tropical rainstorms we get here with flash flooding, two days of the worst fog in 20 years, and an earthquake centred in Taranaki which we didn't feel here, but Wellington certainly did (as a colleague down there on the 21st floor in his hotel discovered - his very first).

And oh joy, the single lift at work is out once again (this is the third time in the last month) meaning we have to walk up the stairs to the 4th floor (5th for those who count sensible from the ground). And that's after slogging up the hill from where I park in the first place.

I have some links. I will put those in another post.

I like Flick'r. I use it for both photos and art -- it's organizing system is fairly straight forward, and lets you organize your pictures into different sets as you choose.

The free version has got some ads, but it's not nearly as ad heavy or visually cluttered as Photobucket (which is just a mess, as far as I'm concerned, and hurts my eyes. I admit: I just won't click a thumbnail for a closer look if I know it leads to Photobucket).

I wonder why the relative hasn't offered to do her share of the cooking?

I use picasa for posting photos here on DW.

I can imagine it must be exhausting, having a boarder for that long, no matter how unobtrusive. But is there a reason why she can't cook for herself? It sounds like a somewhat one-sided arrangement...

the worst fog in 20 years

In terms of visibility? *curious*

It's always good to hear from you.

I hope that the lift soon gets fixed - permanently this time.

Are you sure that the relative really intends to find a flat and isn't banking on staying with you long term?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

They said that the lift outage this week has a completely different cause from the last big outage; they have to replace a gearbox that makes the lift shudder, something I did feel on one trip. [rolls eyes] Why they didn't catch that last time I don't know.

I don't think so; she needs a place far closer to her work than here (Auckland being one of the biggest cities by area on the planet) and people her own age to do things with. Besides, does she really want to eat my cooking for months? ;-)

Aw, that sounds like a lot of things to be going on with. I do hope they at least fix that lift, and that your relative finds somewhere soon!

It's nice to hear from you, though, anyway.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
The lift thing really annoys me but I suspect that my annoyance threshold is a bit low right now.

I feel a bit guilty about the not-writing things for pico but I'm also a bit stuck with what to do with some of the characters and I do tend to write linearly.

Thank you! :-) And also thanks for stepping in with b7friday!

Well, sometimes rl does get in the way and there's not much we can do. It's rubbish when it happens, though. :-/

And no problems about [livejournal.com profile] b7friday! I'll just have to remember now I'm not allowed to post every week... Heh.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
It is, indeed, good to hear from you, even if it's just that you're busy and that annoying things are annoying. :) Here's hoping your boarder finds herself a place before too much longer.

I've been using Picasa for picture hosting. It seems to work pretty well.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I won't hold my breath. At least she goes home most weekends.

What are Picasa's online album features like? I want to be able to direct people to say artwork or UK holiday photos.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
You can organize pictures into albums. Mine are very, very unorganized, though. I tend to just let it shove whatever I'm uploading into default albums, which it labels with the upload date.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's good to hear from you again, even if it is just cheaking in to prove you still exist.

I don't know how you're managing to live with a long term visitor, I feel relieved when visitors go after a long week-end.

Linda Joyce and I both use Photobucket for pictures.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, so it hasn't been easy. She usually goes home for the weekend which gives me a break though.

Can you order pictures in Photobucket? I like mine to be chronological within album.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I've never bothered doing it so I had to look. You can order by newest or oldest, file name, title and best from your point of view, Choose where you can re-order as you please. It didn't warn me about broken links when I rearranged an album just and it does warn if you move a picture to another album or delete it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Reordering breaks links? That may just break the deal for me. I will need to experiment with it and Picasa.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No, moving to a different album breaks links. I think reordering keeps them, but I haven't tried it.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I glad to have you back! but dear, you were busy-I hope the things have calmed down for you.
Ehem - any thought of a long-term-visiting relative makes me crouch...sorry, this is my bad experince...
The main thing is - you are all right. I can see you also have weather problems...stay safe, you and yours!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
She's a lot easier than my or Greg's sister so it could be a lot worse. She's quiet as a mouse, but it's things like now having to shower in the evening because she and Greg take the mornings and there's only one working shower.

The last three days have been stunning: those rare (for us) clear, sunny, still, crisp, cloudless winter days. I hope we get more. I should be outside in this one, not at the office.

[identity profile] stevie-carroll.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't your relative cook (or order in) for you some nights? I'd definitely be offering to do so if I'd stayed longer than intended, along with being quite hapy to eat whatever was going even if it wasn't a 'proper' meal some nights.

[identity profile] threeoutside.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I second this. If I was depending on the kindness of a relative for my lodging, I would sure as hell be making sure I didn't add to her work load.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
She pays board; I should have said. It's just that we can't totally relax with someone else there.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
She's paying board so I'm happy that she does her own laundry (at home in the weekends) and keeps her room tidy. It's just... knowing there's someone else there, not being able to slob about, not being able to watch the very sweary Veep because she's young and sweet and not at all sweary...

Agreed: two meals this week will be soup and toast, and fish and chips. :-)

I haven't found any photo hosting service that has the key features of the old Scrapbook: the ability to tag and create galleries that organize by tag, the ability to put images in order in an album, and (especially) the ability to move and re-organize without breaking every link to every posted image. If I ever do, I'll be all over it.

Photobucket does have tagging, album creation and sub-albums. It's easy to load stuff in, but not as easy to keep it organized over time.

LJ finally migrated me, and the shrieks of agony were intense. I damn near gave up. (I lost five years of work there -- over 1500 images that used to be organized and cross-tagged.)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I have almost 4000 images on Crapbook and don't even want to open that can of worms. I felt like crying when they screwed that up so comprehensively.

Can you order within albums in Photobucket? I'm also considering Picasa but they don't say much about their features. I suppose I'd have to join both and check them out to see which I like best. I already have Flickr for art and craft stuff but I don't really like how it works.

I need to experiment and I haven't really had the time or inclination.

FOUR THOUSAND?!? OMG, and I thought I'd been hit bad.

I did cry.

I don't think you can set a custom order in Photobucket, the way you could in the old Scrapbook. I gather from one of your other commenters that there are some options for ordering, but not at the same level.

I've been too crushed to explore other options, although I intend to do so. Are you up for sharing information as we stagger along?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-11 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I am, though I haven't done any experimenting yet. I'm a bit distracted right now plus I have to get my pico challenge done. [sighs, overcome with sever laziness]

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
being able to blob out is very important at the end of the day

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It so is! I sometimes get an hour or so if I don't go food-shopping because I start work at 7:30am to get some time at the end of the day (and avoid the horrendous traffic).

[identity profile] samantha-vimes.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
A 2 month houseguest relative is enough of a member of the household to take care of cooking the dinner a few times a week, doing some laundry etc, so you get some blob out time. If you do all the housework, moving out is less inviting to her.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-07-08 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I should add that she pays board and does her own laundry. There will be at least one soup meal a week too. :-) It's just not being able to relax and blob out. Vacuuming more often etc is a good thing really because I am slack.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2012-07-13 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I hope life gets easier soon (and that the lift gets fixed quickly!).
