Happy birthday!

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen!

And I finally found out how other people know these things--on the very useful LJ summary page which shows birthdays, your memories, common FAQs, and you can update your journal from it. People who don't like the usual update page might prefer this one.

I just go by the complete list of Friends' Birthdays here (http://www.livejournal.com/birthdays.bml). I only update via the webportal when I'm away from home.

I don't have a client, but I don't mind the update page myself.

What are the advantages of a client?

Not that it's an issue for you anymore, but I understand it's lower-bandwidth than using a webpage.

I don't use one either, but I'm considering playing with one.

You might like that summary page as the update box is quite narrow, and you can customise the page. I quite like using the web to update as I often edit what I post. Anyway, I wouldn't know which client to get. Let me know what you find out.

I don't use Windows, so I suspect you and I would be looking at different clients, in any case...

Which non-windows thing do you use -- Mac or Linux? (or *BSD or...?)

The client is simple and uncluttered. It allows spellcheck and editing of your last entry, as well as choice of user pic, and posting restrictions, but it doesn't have all the crap like the sidebar that I don't need to see everytime I update.

I don't like webmail either.

I use this page (http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml) to update from. There isn't a sidebar and it's fairly uncluttered. Perhaps I see a different page from other people (though it looks the same in Firefox and IE6) as I never had any trouble with the recent changes unlike others.

I've used that one occasionally, but I still prefer my client. Just what I'm used to, I suppose.

I shall give Semagic a try this weekend; [livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse recommends it. Which one do you use?

Visions. Old in LJ terms, but it works.

I think I prefer my birthday list as it shows the next one at the top. You can customise what you have on the page, so I set the number to show as being greater than my friends count so I see them all.

I like the birthday list, but sadly there is no direct link to that page from the sidebar.

No, I only found out about it because someone posted a link. I've bookmarked it.
