Update

I haven't done a proper post for a while; it's been hard with an unexpected boarder (a young relative who got a job in Auckland but hasn't found any accommodation yet--and isn't likely to in a hurry as she's very picky) as I have to do more stuff like housekeeping and cooking and entertaining. We're used to having scrappy meals during the week as Greg gets home any time between 6 and 8pm but now I have to be a lot more organised; no more soup and toast. I used the slow cooker today and that's going to be a good option provided I'm organised enough the night before to cut all the stuff up and put it in the fridge ready to transfer in the morning. Tonight was Greek lemon chicken with chickpeas.

And damn, it's raining again. I hate winter. I think you knew that.

Greg is in Christchurch, combining training some new clients with seeing how his mother in the red zone is. He already fixed her hot water. He was meant to fly down on Saturday and I took him to the airport in fog, doubting he'd be able to fly out. "Nah," he said confidently, "those big planes fly in all weathers." Well, they do if their flight crews managed to get to the airport. I had to go back and get him and he drove himself out there Sunday morning at quarter-to-ridiculous o'clock.

What else is there? Work is going pretty well. I have a review next week and I'm hoping for a raise since I've been told I've exceeded their expectations. You never know your luck. After all, I'm not earning anywhere near what I did several years ago and the cost of living's gone up heaps in that time. This country is Not Doing Well, but at least I'm working for a company that's growing which is rare these days.

I watched some Leverage tonight and was a bit puzzled but realised later that I've skipped a whole season. Oy.

I should really be writing my finishathon story but I feel too tired at the end of the day. I think I'll start using my lunch hour.

no more soup and toast
There's nothing wrong with soup and toast!

but realised later that I've skipped a whole season

Oh dear. That would indeed be confusing.

Can maybe the young relative help out with dinner -- chopping veggies ahead of time, perhaps? Good practice for when she's in her own kitchen...

Yes, I'm being a snark.

A slow cooker is one of the best inventions EVER! I bought one for my #1 son when he went to uni years ago (and a microwave) He would prepare stuff the night before (or morning if he had time) and just switch it on before he went out and he'd have a smashing meal ready when he got home after a tiring day!

Good luck with your review!

Tonight was Greek lemon chicken with chickpeas.

Sounds yummy. Can I come and board with you too? :)

To be serious, have you suggested to your boarder that she should take a turn with doing the cooking? It sounds rather as if she's creating extra work for you without contributing at all herself.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, she's quite good at helping (and she's paying board)! It's mainly figuring out what to eat each night and also not being able to just blob out when I get home. I only get a little down time now once she's gone up to her room to text or chat to her friends. At least she goes home for weekends which gives us introvert time.

It's nice to hear from you on LJ once in a while! ;)

Glad to hear work's going well. Good luck with the raise! And good luck to your boarder with the housing search, because I know how annoying it can be having people in your house, even when they're perfectly likeable people.

I find the slow cooker is immensely useful for when I actually have to cook, if only because I find it a lot easier and less annoying to do all the chopping and stuff when I'm not already hungry and just wanting some damn dinner already. :) I made an awesome curry in mine last week.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
You understand! It's not having time to myself that really gets me, and not being able to blob out after work.

I would love to make a curry but she doesn't like very hot food. She liked the pizza we had tonight (and it was damned good if I say so myself).

The trouble with the slow cooker is not having time in the morning to prepare anything so I have to do it the night before. More time gone and more having to be unnaturally organised. (I'm very organised at work but usually anything goes here.)

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I so understand. :)

And it was an extremely mild curry, but some people can't even stand that much. (I know my mother wouldn't have eaten it!)

Usually what I do is cook on my day off, when I do have time in the morning, and then spend most of the rest of the week eating the results, but that only works as a plan when there's only one of you, and thus a lot of leftovers. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
My cooking usually covers two meals unless it's something really quick like soup or salad, but now there are three it's only one meal and lunch for me the next day.

I'm eating reheated homemade pizza from last night right now - I got LJ whitelisted so I can check in at lunch. :-) At home I have a beef and veg stew simmering which I'll add dumplings to tonight because it was 4C this morning (13C inside) which is damned cold for here.

And ooh, Burn Notice must be coming back soon.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Man, both the pizza and the stew sound really good to me. Clearly I am hungrier than I thought. :)

And yay for lunch-hour LJ access!

I've been watching Burn Notice on DVD, so I'm constantly behind on it, but S5 is out very soon, and I'm looking forward to it.

No, the big planes do not fly in all sorts of weathers. Hopefully, however, it's not that bad and there need be no delays.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
He got away OK the next morning; by them all the delayed flights were caught up.

Aw, well, it's nice to hear from you when you can - and I hope you can work out some writing time for yourself. That's never fun when it's squeezed out so much. And good luck with your review, too! :-/

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'm going to have to write in my lunch hour. Not a bad idea anyway now that the stupid Bluecoat system we're testing at work has suddenly decided LJ is a phishing site. Sigh.

Hey, welcome back! Missed you around here! :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, it's just that I don't have that much spare time these days. I do have some more posts planned, plus the photos of the tree adventure I went on, but I just haven't got round to them.

Ugh on blah weather. My brother just left after three and a half months staying with us--couldn't find work in Santa Fe where he lives with his family, so he took a consulting job here. Relatives, what are you gonna do--but it was very disruptive. I made him take over meals one day a week, but his cooking...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
It is disruptive!

She already does her own breakfast and lunch; it's just hard having to plan and not having much time to blob out. At least she goes home for the weekends which means we can do what we like then.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2012-05-28 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I can see that "normal life" is in progress...
Ah, welcome to the club!:-)
I am really happy to hear from you!!!!*Hugs*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, life goes on... I really have to catch up with posts and photos etc though. Maybe this weekend which is a three-day one?

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2012-05-28 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck with the review, the advance comments sound encouraging.

It's amazing how much an extra person disrupts your routine, even the basics like everyone getting through the bathroom and out for work in the right sequence. I hope she finds her own place soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
I do hate the bits in reviews where you have to state your aspirations. I don't want to go into management or anything like that, just be interestingly and challengingly employed.

Yes, I have to rush home and shower since I go to work early (to beat the traffic) and it's just easier with two others vying for the bathroom. I think it really is the disruption and change that's so stressful and not having much down-time.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2012-05-28 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
aren't guests a bit like fish, after 3 days they go off? Sorry, I'm sure it isn't like that at all!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
She's actually very mice and helpful. It's just that it throws our own routine out and doesn't give me much time to myself.

[identity profile] nautile26.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
There was a programme on the ABC's Catalyst just last week on Christchurch and the geology that's led to its fate. It's so sad, such a beautiful place, and then I think the very next day there were more tremors.

I do hope your boarder finds something soooooon!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
Greg's down there now and there've been several shakes in the last day or so. It's very sad. I used to want to live there but so much that's beautiful has gone. People who live there or come from there like Greg find it very hard that so much of their city's just gone.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I hope the review goes well. :)

Winter, blah. I hate it when the wind blows through me even though I've got a hundred or so layers of clothes on. :(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Today turned out surprisingly nice after all! I'd like winter better if it wasn't so wet and dark; a few more fine days like today would go down very well, thanks!

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Good to hear from you. I'm not on LJ much either.
Good luck with your job review - I hope they will give you a raise. I'm glad you're enjoying the work.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
My flist is diminishing which is probably another reason I don't post much. Are you more on DW? I do read and post both places.

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I have a DW account but never use it. I'd gotten out of the habit of posting on LJ and I've just been finding it hard to return. My LJ started as a personal journal and though I've tried to do more fandom posts, it's never turned out too well. I guess I'm in a bit of a flux at the moment, trying to figure out what I want to do. It hasn't been a very good year and that hasn't helped things either. Ah well. Maybe I will just try harder to return.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry things haven't been going well for you. I hope you both are well, and the animals too.

My LJ started as a fannish one but so many people have drifted away I just don't write or post anywhere near as much.
