Some new things I've watched

I enjoyed Sherlock despite having a couple of issues.
I didn't like Irene Adler's association with Moriarty, or the fact that she had to be rescued by Holmes. She's cleverer than that, and that is why this fix-it fic is now canon for me.
That aside though, it was a vastly entertaining ride and I love the musical score. I look forward to the next two.

I also saw Tintin and enjoyed it a lot. Of course it was in 2D for me (since Greg can't see 3D and let me tell you, it was hard to find an evening 2D session). I liked that it diverged from the canon story because and added elements from other stories as then I didn't know what would happen next. I kept wanting to go back and watch bits again so I'll be buying the DVD. (And in other news on that score, we will be getting Blu-Ray capability in this house soon.) BTW that cat? Was so very Jasmin.

We also started watching Person of Interest, mainly because of Michael Emerson's presence in it. I rather like it; I'd rather see murders prevented than solved.

Last night we caught Eternal Law, a new British comedy-drama about angelic lawyers. Yes, lawyers who are also angels (not only a contradiction in terms, but I'd have thought a very limited way of helping people, but hey). I'm not too sure about this one yet but I figured that the British wouldn't get too soppy about the concept and they didn't. Plus, Samuel West! And Ukweli Roach is rather gorgeous and convincingly naive.

Your Sherlock reservations are pretty much my reservations, but yes, despite that I enjoyed myself immensely.

I rather enjoyed Tintin (no 3D tech in my area, thankfully) but the impressed-by-Herge-at-an-early-age spouse didn't like it at all.

I really loved the Tintin movie. The cars! The ships! The sidecar! La Castafiore! The plus-fours -- which were a good way of introducing the character before even showing his face. And Jamie Bell's dance training I think showed through and helped him to portray Tintin's youth and agility, and made the action sequences a real treat. I'm not used to such an immediate physicality in an animated film; Weta's motion-capture technique looked great, no helium-filled characters trying to "act" weight and momentum, and hardly any uncanny valley problems.

Snowy was my only disappointment... he's much more of a character in the books, when he narrates his thoughts to himself and the reader, and since he was entirely animated he didn't seem to be there in the world as much as the real actors were. I wonder if this is why the film seemed so, so slashy to me; Tintin's main relationship in the books is with Snowy, and without that his relationship with Captain Haddock ended up looking much stronger. And they touch each other constantly, omg. (I do wonder if I'm odd for noticing that, but anyway, those were my thoughts on Tintin.)

I didn't even notice that "Sherlock" had a musical score. :) But that's a good thing, as I generally only consciously notice background music if I find it intrusive or if what's on screen is failing fully to capture my attention.

The score (the work of David Arnold, I believe) is excellent - the opening theme tune (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RptHNep-Kdg&feature=related) is fine, though a little portentous, but my absolute favourite is what I call the Balkan theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECV064U6ygw&list=FLViwdPNklkf-us65zchYvAg&index=31&feature=plpp_video) (no reason except that it sounds a bit Balkan to me - I think officially it's called "Sherlock's theme"). There's also an agitated sound from the strings used in moments of tension which has been running through my head all week.

Yes! It's the Sherlock theme that I love!

Good, I like reading these comments because I actually can“t go to the cinema thanks to my commuting and no means of transport on weekends. I do share a car with my son but he really needs it for his many jobs...so...
I have always liked Tintin series...and will possibly buy a DVD too!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You need transport of your own! OK, no good in the snow, but how about a Vespa or something like that?

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
True enough...however it will have to wait, there are more urgent things like new piping and radiators in the whole house and the following decorating the whole house...

I think the Adler-Moriarty angle is awesome and I do hope it will be expanded.

Moriarty is the cutest and also most terrifying villain of the season!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't think Adler would be outright evil though, unless she was playing a deeper game with him.

I still wonder whether Molly's pulling a psychopath's (brother's?) strings though. She appears to be so clueless, Sherlock would never suspect her.

I am kind of pissed off with the whole Adler-Moriarty fanon being canonized by Guy Ritchie, too. :( I like the way it's done in Sherlock, though. Maybe because I think Jim Moriarty is one of the best done bad guys since the most recent appearance of the Master.

I rather enjoyed Sherlock but then I never expected it to be canon. Though I'm not surprised Moffat introduced romance into the battle of wits, it's so typically him.
The "fix" was entertaining and I bet Moffat wished he'd thought of it and had the time to squeeze it in.

The main bit that bothered me was the boomerang error. Not a mistake Sherlock would make.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Moffat wouldn't have thought of it; he needed to make her dependent on Sherlock in some way because that's how he writes women.

I love the new Sherlock, Cumberbatch and Freeman are perfect as Holmes and Watson. I've been surprised at how much I enjoy the series being repositioned into the 21st century. Watson even has his own blog (http://www.johnwatsonblog.co.uk/). :)

I also saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie on the weekend; it just reinforced for me what a great combination C and F are.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I love it too despite 102 not being very good.

I want to see the new film! Greg's not keen but I really enjoyed the first one. Eh, maybe I'll have to get it on DVD.

[identity profile] nautile26.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
The two are so very different, but also very enjoyable. The new film is a lot of fun, and the scenes of London are wonderful. Better on the big screen, I think. I only saw the first movie on TV and wasn't so impressed with it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I saw it on TV too, and Greg said it was almost B&W, the city scenes were so grimy. Well, they would have been, but I didn't see it that way at all despite being a very visual person.

[identity profile] nautile26.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it was the grimy look of the London streets that I really liked; rather than the shiny chocolate box images that we often see in films. I think that darkness comes across far better on the big screen, however.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoy Person of Interest, but towards the end of the series I was getting a little bored

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Has it not been renewed then? I've only seen three eps so far and I'm intrigued by Mr Finch's backstory.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-10 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it has or not. Don't get me wrong, it's great, some great little twists, but pretty formulaic due to the nature of the information they get, IMHO. I kept waiting for something a bit bigger to happen, although big things do happen...ah, you'll see ;0)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-01-10 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pleased they're not doing the terrorism side as then I wouldn't be watching. I'll be interested where it all goes and what comes up. I haven't seen the abandoned library (all those books all over the floor!) again; are they still there but without the books?

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-10 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, I don't remember if I saw them more than once. At the time I commented that it reminded me of an abandoned library I went to in London a few years back. I was visiting a records office in the same building, and needed the loo, so I had to walk through the abandoned library to get there. Which shocked me, 'cos I'd assumed the books would have been moved out to wherever the new library was, but no :0(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-01-10 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
Noooo! That's so sad!
