I was never that butch, more androgynous. A company I worked for had a ball for their 10-year anniversary and we had to go formal. I went in a black fedora with white band, black suit, white shirt--and pink tie and makeup. Sod wearing a gown; I didn't have one and I wasn't going to hire one and then look just wrong in it.
I should add that I still only wear trousers, shirts, and jackets, though of varying levels of masculinity. Some are just plain gender-neutral classic, others actual men's clothes, and some, like my beloved purple jacket, definitely for women though equally definitely not at all feminine. I loathe lace and frills and bows and things like that.
