"I'm looking and I'm definitely seeing flippers and not paws."

In the news today: a seal pup wandered into a home via the cat door and made itself at home on the couch, not at all fazed by the resident cats and dog. The house owner thought she was hallucinating and called in a neighbour who, yes, says the words in the subject header. Here's the article complete with seven photos. Eventually the DOC (Department of Conservation) put the little guy in a net and a box but that didn't stop him; he escaped into the front seat and turned the radio on. Maybe he hoped he was on the news.

Aww, poor thinglet. *cuddles him, wild animal or not*

I couldn't have resisted touching him!

That's hilarious! Truth is stranger than fiction, once again. :D

He heard about the cushy life cats have!

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he knew how to use the cat door. :D

It made my evening!

That is one mixed up seal.

I would suggest that he was a candidate for actually living in a seal sanctuary. He'd get on with the humans.

I'm not sure if we have them, but we have lots of beaches with protected seals. I think he was too young to be scared.

I had to google to find him- I can't get the original article to load. SO CUTE. :^)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I just tried the article and it loads fine for me!

Very, very cute.

I still can't get it. I get this error message... maybe my browser is stupid.

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.nzherald.co.nz.

My one can! It's my main news page.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Neither can my Safari browser. Maybe my ISP is causing it not to work.

Or the pathway between there and here has some sort of glitch. That can happen.

What a lovely boy! Maybe he decided to taste some joys of humans´ life!
That he was not aggressive is really not typical for a wild animal. He might be more used to visiting the houses that we would believe!
Thank you for this funny thing!

He's only just weaned so I don't think so. However other seals have been seen around city streets and in gardens (terrifying some senior citizens apparently) lately so maybe we have a storm coming. The weather's bad enough this week as it is.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Aha, this sounds very probable. I hope nothing disastrous will happen.
Weather is very strange here too, we have never had sich strong wind here...and real winter will strike in January, I am sure...

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Poor seal pup, he must have been thinking he'd found somewhere warm and safe, with companions.

Can't help wondering what made him brave the great indoors. Was he as wild as they thought? Or had someone had him as a pet on the sly?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
He came from a nearby beach, I believe. I felt sorry for him too.
