vilakins: Vila looking questioning (eh?)

Um, what?

Seen on [community profile] vintage_ads: the female urinal--and something called the Restal Receptor Bath (a bath in a shower). To both: why? (Maybe Vila didn't like the showers in the Liberator and wanted a bath to soak in, but it doesn't exactly look very capacious.)

There was something else interesting I was going to tell you but I've completely forgotten. Anyway, final Downton Abbey of the season tonight. I will miss it greatly but there will be a Christmas special. I'll take what I can get.

Do people think I'd like the A Song of Ice and Fire books or Game of Thrones? Tell me reasons I would or wouldn't.

Admittedly I sometimes get a craving for a good hot bath that I don't have the space for in my small bathroom, but since that one looks barely ankle-high, I think it would be rather pointless... :-)

I haven't read the books (frankly, because I thought they sounded too much like stereotypical epic fantasy) but I was actually deeply impressed by the tv-series, particularly how intelligently it treats the characters - they are all interesting, complex and non-static - and hooray! that is as true for female as male characters!

However, it is also very dark, bloody and violent (though in a somewhat matter-of-fact rather than gratuitous way) and because of that I would hesitate to recommend it.

I'm not surprise the female urinal didn't catch on, it looks horribly uncomfortable! I should be getting my bathroom remodelled in the next year or two. At them moment I have a bath with a shower over. I'm thinking of getting rid of the bath and having a wet room or large shower cubicle. The thing is I like a soak in the bath now and then. Not enough to keep a bath though.

I like the Game of Thrones TV series but I haven't read the books so I don't know how close they've kept to the story or the atmosphere of the books.

I LOVE Downton Abbey. I don't think I can bear to wait for series three. At least I have the trip to Highclere Castle to keep me going :)

:-) ´The 12" high Restal´ is definitely a very strange thing:-)
As for the books, I haven´t read them but people around like them for clever and cunning characters and good story. I am influenced by the film (very good)with Sean Bean and his magnificently played role. Still, I will not read it nor watch it...(spoiler thing)...But I am a silly idiot, you know:-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Of course you'd love it with Sean Bean, and he's certainly an excellent draw card, being a great actor and very personable. Maybe I'll try the TV series first and see if I feel like starting the books. Apparently it's been renewed for another season (book?).

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for your kind understanding.:-)
I believe your strategy is the best.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
I've decided not to watch or read as I've heard the books are too dark and sexist for my taste. Maybe the TV series is better but I'll give them both a miss, Sean Bean notwithstanding.

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
The books are extremely popular. I've heard the world and character building are absolutely wonderful. However, I've also heard it's an extremely dark series - murder, rape, body parts, sexism, incest... which is why I haven't, and most likely won't, read the books. But that's just me..

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. That's very much me too. Oh well, there are plenty of other series and authors around to discover.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
I've never read the books because they sound too dark to me. :(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard a bit more and they definitely do to me too. Thanks!

[identity profile] samantha-vimes.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
The shower sized bath was because daily washing was now normal but many places weren't large enough for a bath tub, and some people just hate showers. It would also do for foot soaking or sitz bath treatments.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's so shallow it wouldn't cover much of a person! I've used a real sitz bath when I was in Switzerland: sort of square but much deeper and with a built-in ledge to sit on. I'm surprised they're not used more often as they'd be easier for old people or invalids to get in and out of. I'm not sure why my friends had one; maybe it was space.

[identity profile] samantha-vimes.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
The instructions I've used for sitz baths, you really don't need to be deep in it; the idea is just to have your herbal or contact medicine in connection with the necessary parts for a soak. I've used a regular bath tub but only ran it a few inches deep. I can't remember why, I think I might have been treating razor burn in a delicate area.
Anyhow, the Restal bath is obviously not a luxuriating kind of thing, but be able to sit, run some water, sit on the edge and basically give yourself a sponge bath with some of the discomfort of such things-- coldness, mess, and awkward posing-- taken out of the picture. It is suggested for replacing a shower or turning a closet into a half-bath, in the caption. It's not meant to be as good as a proper tub, but in a tiny flat, it might have to do. Think of it as a relative of the Murphy bed.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose so. And maybe it's good for people who can't stand in showers.

What's the Murphy bed?

[identity profile] samantha-vimes.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
It is.

If you've watch old slapstick comedies, you've seen the Murphy bed-- it's the kind on a hinge of sorts, that folds up into the wall when not in use so you can change the bedroom into a living room, artist's studio or whatever by getting the big and private furniture tucked away. It's useful in comedies because you can have people get folded up with it, by accident or to hide.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm imagining Vila with a hangover sitting in that thing under a cold shower.

I wondered if it was one of those! I'd rather have a platform bed and claim the room that way.

[identity profile] samantha-vimes.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
The books you speak of, I have heard a blogger criticize for telling the same story over and over and never getting anywhere.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
I've decided they're too dark for me anyway. This is another reason not to bother. Thanks!

[identity profile] quabazaa.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha the female urinal gave me a good laugh. I wouldn't know how to use it!

I haven't read the books, some people just rave about them, maybe try one and see if you like it? I always meant to read it. Someone had told me Wheel of Time was better so I read that instead (enjoyed it at 14 not sure what I'd think now)

If you want a new series, I wonder, have you read the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb or the Sevenwaters trilogy by Juliet Marillier? Two of my fav fantasy series :)

[identity profile] quabazaa.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Also in Argentina they have bidets everywhere!!! It was weird, since in France I didn't see a single one. Quite funny that in tiny city apartments they find room for bidets. All my Argie friends seem to love them too, it's common to just sit there and read a book with the water spraying on them (not for sexual gratification) and things like that. Very interesting, I didn't even really know what they were before going there!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never used a bidet though I think they're a great idea.

I gather you were supposed to stand over the female urinal and pee, but that's not that easy without a device like my Shewee (http://www.shewee.co.nz/), and that can be used anywhere.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've decided I'm not watching or reading. Thanks for the recs thought; I've noted them down. I think I've read one of the Farseer books; I should get back to those.

In return I can rec three fantasy series I love, though none of them are finished yet:
The Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch
The Chathrand Voyage series by Robert V S Redick
The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

I'm going to reread the Morgaine series too.

I remember enjoying the Sevenwaters books rather a lot! And I've heard Robin Hobb recommended here and there, may have to pick one up and see :)

[identity profile] vann.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
There is a lot of rape in at least the TV series of Game of Thrones, and although there are some strong women, most of them are still raped or threatened with rape, or else made impotent by the powerful men in their lives. I'd give it a miss, personally. You might fare better, but I ranted about it pretty long in my journal a few weeks back, though it's full of spoilers.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've been warned about that now. A little I can maybe take but that's pretty bad. the TV series has just started here but I won't watch or read the books. Thanks for confirming that.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If your bathroom is tiny like ours Reastal's bath would be ideal.

It's not a nice story, very gritty and grim. Don't know about the series haven't got round to watcjing it yet!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It'd be basically a sponge bath though. At least your feet would get a good soak.

Thanks for the confirmation. I've already decided I won't watch it; it doesn't sound my sort of thing at all.
