30 Days Of Fan Fiction: Day 1

A couple of other people are doing this meme, and it's the first of those 30-day ones that has appealed.

Note: If you don't want to see these entries, just edit my tags and filter this one out.

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

I've been writing for most of my life, having at age five written a series of stories, devoid of any moral, called The Adventures of Naughty Amelia. As I could read already and was bored, they used to send me to other classes to read chapters when the teacher was called away. At 12 or so I wrote two novels in exercise books, one a boarding school story (very much based on the school I was at), and the other (unfinished) about three children trapped in France when the Germans invaded.

Fanfic though? A lot of my unwritten stories, run in my head like films, were very derivative, the Gormenghast novel series and Star Wars being major influences, and I often mentally rewrote the endings of stories or TV series when I didn't lie them. Why yes, Blake's 7 was one of those. When I watched it again in 2001 when it was rerun here, I'd made up so many alternative endings as a teenager, I wasn't sure what the real one was when I got to it, just that I knew I didn't like it.

So yes, my first written-down fanfic was Blake's 7, to no-one's surprise, and it was Vila and how it all ended for him that pulled me in. It wasn't a Gauda Prime fix-it though, not as such though it included one. It was Vila Restal's E-mails, running through the whole series. I thought if maybe six people read them, I'd have won. Then I found the B7 mailing lists and an audience there which was very encouraging, and some of them got me to join LJ.

Rest of the questions

2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.

3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favourite characters to write?

4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?

5 –If you have ever had a character, whether your "muse" or not, try to push their way into a fic, what did you do about it?

6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?

7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?

8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.

9 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favourite pairings to write?

10 – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

11 – Do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favourite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

14 – Ratings: how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?

15 – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?

16 – Summaries: do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

17 – Titles: are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?

18 – Where do you get the most inspiration or ideas for your fics?

19 – When you have plot ideas, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

20 – Do you ever get ideas from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?

21 – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why? If not, how do you feel about sequels?

22 – Have you ever participated in a fest, ficathon, or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favourite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

24 – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a beta horror story or dream story?

25 – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

26 – What is the oddest (or most fun) thing you've had to research for a fic?

27 – Where is your favourite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?

29 – What is your current project or projects?

30 – Do you have a favourite fic you've written? What makes it your favourite? And don't forget to give us a link!

This is kind of interesting, both as a meme, and for your own answers. I can remember when I first got on the web ten years ago now (good lord!) and Blake's 7 was one of the first things I investigated. I do remember reading works by you and SallyMN in particular and enjoying them.

I might give this meme a go myself. I think I need something to boost my general fannish squee and thought. :-)

I watched Gormenghast. It bothered me. In a place of insanity and insane rules, I so wanted the rule-breaker to be an influence for good, not as bad as everyone said and worse. I suppose the message was supposed to be "A sociopath is a sociopath, no matter how messed up the people you compare him to." But I was let down by it all the same.

I've only seen part of it but I've read the books at least twice. Yes, Steerpike starts out looking like the hero who will change things but maybe peake wanted to subvert that trope.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
I attempt to read the first book, but couldn't get past the first page or two. It seemed wilfully obscure.

I quite enjoyed the BBC TV series, without finding it very involving. All the characters seemed to be either unpleasant or stupid or both, which meant I struggled to find anyone to identify with. I did feel sorry for Neve McIntosh's character, though. Looking it up, I see that the character was Lady Fuchsia, though I've retained no memory of that name at all. Even allowing for me increasingly fallible memory, I think that suggests that I wasn't totally gripped.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
Poor Fuchsia. I also loved the doctor Prunesquallor and the old headmaster. I suspect though that my liking of what I saw of the TV series was inspired by my love of the books and how close they got visually to what I'd imagined.

By coincidence, an article about Mervyn Peake appeared in my newspaper today. It's available online: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/bookreviews/8608252/Ways-With-Words-Interview-with-Mervyn-Peakes-Children.html

Thank you! That's a fascinating insight into the man. I'm not sure I want to read the book Maeve wrote though (Titus Awakes) if it means that "Gormenghast was no longer possible".

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I thought that it was a very good article. Many children of famous people seem to have little understanding of their parent's work, but not in this case.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought the TV series was a brave, wonderfully done... failure. They're books that really canNOT be filmed, since the central character - for me - is actually the writing itself, but full marks to everyone for trying (yes, I adore the books, especially the second one).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
True. I just enjoyed them for the look and luscious visuals.

You may be interested in the link John gives above. I doubt I'll read the latest book though.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt it too - if it's not Peake, I'm not interested.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't that fond of the third one which was pieced together from drafts.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... this happens, it did to Wodehouse's last (and there's a couple of other writers who I know of or suspect...)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe they lost their marbles and/or got bad ghost writers like Larry Niven. I used to love his stuff when I was a teenager but now it's basically badly written porn.

I'll be reading these with great interest!

Thanks! I'm enjoying reading others' responses too.

These are serious questions! I'll be interested to read your replies as well.
I've written so little I don't think I have answers to most of them.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the impression, probably from picowrimo, that you wrote a fair bit of MfU. I'm certainly writing less these days because so many B7 fans have moved on. Now and then I get inspired to write for other fandoms, but none have grabbed me as much from a writing POV as B7.

[identity profile] elmey.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think I've done nine MFU pieces, and only two of them are of any real length. When I was much younger I fooled around writing, mostly in book universes, but no one saw that stuff :) I'm happy puttering around in my little corner and enjoy the writing, but so many people have tons of fandoms and reams of work to their name. I would feel like a bit of a fraud answering those questions.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
That's a pity; you write well. There's someone else writing MfU in picowrimo and I gather it's still a fairly active fandom.
ext_422737: uncle hallway (cool fez)

[identity profile] elmey.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
There are three of us in picowrimo this time, one of us for only half the month though. It's all azdak's fault :D

MFU is still fairly active--Soderbergh has apparently signed to do an MFU movie next year, god knows what will happen after that.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I remember her writing MfU.

A film? But who will they cast? Unless they're doing Illya and Napoleon as old men. Both the actors are still in work after all.
ext_422737: uncle hallway (two spies talking)

[identity profile] elmey.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my gosh, you have no idea the wank the casting discussions cause in the MFU comms!

It'll be set in the 60's, but it looks like he's cast George Clooney as Napoleon Solo. Clooney is really too old for the role, so it's really questionable how much like MFU the film will be. It could be a good film, but it won't be MFU.

Besides, noone can replace the original Illya :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. OK, they both had very distinctive looks, but they could try a little harder to get actors who are more like them.

[identity profile] theyarnproject.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I always like these. They make it easier, to get to know people. =)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe there should be a crafting one! :-)

[identity profile] theyarnproject.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think there should be. =)
