Little earthquake

There was a baby earthquake here in Auckland over an hour ago (while we were watching White Collar). Just a short sharp jolt that had Jasmin looking around suspiciously. On our geonet site it showed up as a 2.9 at 9.09pm with the epicentre 9km deep and just in the next suburb (St Heliers). We're on the Australian plate here so don't get many. I hope that's all we get.

So far nothing more according to geonet, but I probably wouldn't be able to tell at night what with a cat and a human sharing the bed and moving about.

It was, according to Geonet. There hasn't been anything since then, even in Christchurch.

Hope it was just a quick wriggle. But 2.9 isn't bad, we had a lot around that level here in 2002 which just broke the odd ornament*, so as long as it's no worse you should be OK.

* It was a pretty odd ornament, come to think of it.

Nothing fell over; it actually felt like a quarry explosion, a quick sharp jolt like the ones we used to get at 10am every morning at one job I had; they used to stop any machining and wait till it had happened. There hasn't been anything since. Volcanoes are really more likely here.

We had a whole chain of tremors in 2002 (http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/news/s/48066_city_tremors_rumble_on), just before I moved house, including the big one (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2002/oct/26/weather.climatechange) at 3.9. I've noticed a couple since; the last one startled julesjones, who had never had a tremor in her years in California so wasn't expecting one here.

I got almost used to them in Wellington when I lived there. They have a lot, and everyone expected them to get the Big One, not Christchurch, but I'd say the frequent quakes relieve the pressure there. One hopes so anyway because a lot of the city centre is on reclaimed land, it's very hilly, and like Auckland there aren't many ways out (esp if the roads by the sea sink).

Let's hope so! I've lived in an earthquake-prone city (Wellington) and wouldn't think anything of it but quakes are unusual here.

I love White Collar! I suppose all thieves and tricksters are rather like Gen or Vila, but he does have the boyish charm and dark good looks of an older Gen.

BTW on another comm on Dreamwidth I came across a Queen of Attolia icon and had a chort convo with the owner. :-)

I haven't seen Tangled yet; that guy really reminded me of Gen. My sister loved it; I'll have to get it out.

It has; in fact that was the most recent earthquake for the whole country.

We have thunder storms this week too. I hate them, esp when the thunder's so close it shakes the building (as it's done to the house and a cafe I was in).

Eeek... hope you don't get any more! I keep being told that Nelson is due for an earthquake any time soon. I'm having a hard time getting it grips with how geological unstable NZ is.
