PC and cats update

The PC is definitely dead, probably a fried motherboard. It was 7 years old so it lasted pretty well. I'll be getting a small new one (all I really need) with Windows 7 (which is heaps better than that bloated monstrosity Vista; I've been on XP) and then we'll have to bring all my data and software across.

It's better news about the cats. Sebastian is much better and eats his probiotic mixed in with his breakfast with gusto, and enjoys yogurt too (another form of probiotic) so I now have two flag-tailed yogurt cats. It takes two of us to pill him but he doesn't bear a grudge; he's straight into his special soft food afterwards. I doubt he'll need any more treatment once this is finished.

He's a really friendly, happy, smoochy playful little guy, and Ashley liked him from the start. Jasmin, the cat who protested so (too?) much, is getting on well with him now. They were sitting in the sun upstairs before, and I just saw them both outside on the deck and managed to get a photo of Jasmin going for Sebastian's tail. :-) I think he's brought back some of the girls' kittenhood.

I have lots of cat-related photos to post once I have a PC. :-)

It's Saturday so I went down to Spotlight to buy the makings of a crocheted Totoro. While I was there I saw a nice selection of felt which I could use to make sewn plushies, but I'll have to cost it to see if knitted/crocheted ones are cheaper. I also saw a notice that next Saturday is a knitting day when they'll show off new yarns and patterns so I'll turn up for that; could be fun (and expensive). I resisted some beautiful thick-and-thin Italian yarn but if I think of something that would show it off well, I may go back and get it.

Sounds like at least your data should be OK, so that's good! Also glad to hear that Sebastian seems to be doing better.

It's just that I may have to re-install a lot of the stuff I use so it will work under Windows 7. At least I should then have a few trouble-free years.

The only way I could tell there was something wrong with him was the diarrhoea and the really bad smells. He's been crapping in the garden, and I haven't detected a bed niff from him at all, so I'm sure his digestive system is coming right.

I had similar problems with kitten-Claudia (who leaked) and kitten-Jasmin, so I assume it's a common thing with immature cat digestions. I cured Claudia with Thrive, an enzyme powder for dogs which I suppose is similar to the probiotic powder I'm giving Sebastian, and Jasmin had some pills, maybe the same ones he's on.

I'm glad Sebastian is doing better- pity about the computer, but if you can retrieve all the contents, then YAY.

I had to google to find out what a Totoro might look like. He's cute!

Yep, that's it! He's from a lovely animated film called My Neighbour Totoro. If you get a chance, see any of the Studio Ghibli films (the studio logo is even a Totoro).

Thanks for the rec. I would like to see the Catbus. :^)

It's one of my favourite films. I also love Porco Rosso, Laputa, Spirited Away... well, all of them really. I also love that Miyazaki has good strong female characters If you're interested, you may be able to find a boxed set of them all; that's what I bought after seeing several films at the cinema.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Box set sounds like a good idea. I'll have to add them to my Amazon wish list for the next time I order stuff.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
They only have a 6-pack which lacks a lot of their films. I got my boxed set from an Asian company and I'm very happy with it. Google it to see what you can find. This site has some good deals (http://www.ioffer.com/i/78662871).

This is the one I got (http://www.ioffer.com/i/studio-ghibli-14-movie-set-english-dubbbed-191796632), going by the cover and the list of contents. With ours you can choose English dubbed or the original Japanese. They really are incredibly beautiful films with great characters and plots. You will love them. That's a very good deal too for what you get included. [checks own set\ Actually mine has some extra stuff:
- On Your Mark
- Only Yesterday (lovely coming-of-age story)
- Ocean Waves
- Whisper of the Heart

It might be worth looking around for a set with all those as well. But that's what my cover looked like and maybe that site has that version.

Our UK TV channels seem to be doing a very good job of showing Studio Ghibli films, though they often seem to be scheduled at very strange times. Within the last couple of weeks I've seen "Whisper of the Heart" and "Kiki's Delivery Service." Both brilliant, but that really goes without saying. And the TV schedules for the coming week show me that I have the option of rewatching "Spirited Away", "Princess Monokoko" and "My Neighbour Totoro".

Good luck with new puter-age and the Big Reinstall. Just think how lovely and responsive a nice fresh install will be - worth all the work :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
It will! And it really was about time with all the odd problems I've had in the last few months. New hardware will also run faster. I hope it's not too long till I have it all though as it's hard without a graphics tablet, scanner, and printer.

Pity about the PC... but Windows 7 seems to be okay (speaketh someone who manahed to avoid Vista completely, sticking with XP)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
I did too; my PC ran XP.

We shall look forward to those new cat photos!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I have taken even more! :-)

Apart from that PC collapse, I am glad to read good news.
I would very much like to see all your cats together. Sweet Seabastian, so he doesn´t make faces at you because of the pills? Tygr always leaves indignantly and doesn´t appear for hours and he really makes faces at me:-)
Crocheting...knitting...all sounds so lovely and easy but I can´t make myself to slow down and try it. Maybe I need to get older and have "bad feet" :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
He doesn't like it but he's fine straight afterwards and rushes to his soft food that's waiting. The others would often refuse to eat afterwards unless it was tuna, but Ashley and Jasmin are pretty good too.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay for good cat news - I'm glad that Sebastian's doing well.

I hope you can get a new PC soon!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Does he remind you of your Muffin? :-) Does Muffin g=have any white bits?

So do I. It's been a low-grade worry lately with the crashes and freezes.

Very glad that Sebastian is responding well, and that the girls are accepting him. Hope you have a PC again soon!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
There hasn't been any cuddling, but then Ashley and Jasmin haven't done any over summer. They're all playing and eating together though, just like the girls were before he came, so he's worked in very well after some initial hostility from Jasmin.

I can't wait to get back to the days of worry-free computing. The regular crashes and freezes have been so annoying and disconcerting.

Glad to hear Sebastian is doing better.

A crocheted Totoro sounds like it would be fun! :o)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, Totoro with leaf brolly!

The pattern looks really good to I think he'll turn out well. :-)

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad they are all getting on well :0)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
A little of Sebastians!

Jasmin and Sebastian were on the couch before, though on separate cushions. I think they're doing extremely well. I'd live them to cuddle up together, but if they don't, they all get lots of cuddles from us.
