RIP PC, Sebastian, space duet

A scary weather bomb came through this afternoon (sudden and relatively brief rain, gale-force winds, and really close thunder) and the power flickered, killing my already sick PC. The thing now refuses to boot.

I'm on Greg's one but lacking bookmarks, Photoshop (though I suppose I can install GIMP on here) and graphics tablet which means no photos of cats or drawings. I really hope I can get everything back. At least I backed up the story I'm working on by sending it to Gmail.

In other news, Sebastian had to go to the vet today for bad diarrhea and, it turned out, an inflamed gut. He got an injection, some probiotic powder and some pills (oh joy, I'll now find out how easy he is to pill) and some special sensitive stomach food till he comes right which should take about five days. Apart from that however he's fine: playful and happy and hungry.

And while I'm here, have a very cool vid: NASA Astronaut Cady Coleman, aboard the International Space Station*, and musician Ian Anderson, founder of the rock band Jethro Tull, joined together for the first space-Earth duet. :-)

* Speaking of the International Space Station, they're on LibraryThing where I friended them--and they friended me back! I thought the "You are now friends with the International Space Station" email was too good to delete.

Good thinking on backing up the story via e-mail. Computer problems are bad enough; it really sucks when you lose whatever you're working on along with them.

Hope Sebastian is all better soon! With any luck, maybe he'll turn out to be as surprisingly easy to pill as Mickey.

We have a technique with the girls: I hold them and Greg uses a pill-popper. It works well, but Ashley objected when we wormed her last month. And of course I'm alone right now. I managed to clip his claws OK, so here's hoping.

Tommy, one of Jenny's cats, has a sensitive stomach due to his bad beginning. When he has a bout of inflammation she feed him boiled white fish for a week or so, it works just as well as the special food and is a lot cheaper. Now she only has two, they have a weekend treat of boiled fish for their meals, it seems to keep Tommy's stomach in order and Reilly just thinks he's died and gone to heaven.
Sorry to here about the computer, as you know I've given up on mine, I will get round to taking in to the shop one day.

What are you using, then?

I'll try him on boiled fish! I do give them bits of cooked fish when we have it, and they like it.

The lap top I splashed out on at Christmas when I got £2000 tax rebate because the Tax man had made a mistake with my taxes. It's limited in that I don't have all my photos saved on line just a selection and it is slower than the desk top but it is OK for lj DW and email.

Aww, poor Sebastian :(

And poor you, with your PC problems!!!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
And poor me cleaning up after him. But yeah, poor wee guy. It's turned cold and he's been borrowing under the blanket on the couch.

Yeah, not likely to get it fixed till after Easter. I installed Firefox here but Adblock just isn't working as well. Crap.

I hope that Sebastian feels better soon... *pats kitty*

The ISS would be a good friend to have, LOL.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
He's cold too; I've had the heating on and am actually wearing a fleece. Off to bed soon.

I suppose they friend everyone back, but still: very cool.

A lively day! Best wishes to Sebastian, and the PC... all you need, when LJ's already so temperamental (I'm finding comments v slow to appear).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
A bloody miserable day. Now I can't speak to Greg in Skype without my PC. It's cold and nothing seems to work as it should on this PC (Adblock not blocking the crap ads in my feeds) and I think Sebastian and I will go to bed now. :-(

[identity profile] quarryquest.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
There is a portable Skype available from portableapps.com not tried it but I presume it works like the rest of everything.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Greg has Skype, but it's his account. Hmm. Maybe I can get him to skype himself since he had to set up a new account in the US because of the one here. Good idea, thanks!

Fingers crossed for Sebastian and your data.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! He ate his probiotics mixed in with some i/d soft food this morning like a little lamb. He adores his food. I'd be worried if he lost his appetite and stopped wanting to play.

[identity profile] maegquare.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! Poor Sebastian! Hope he feels better soon.

Sorry to hear of your PC troubles, too. That's so frustrating.

Very cool vid, loved it! Thanks. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
He's still eating (extremely) well and playing so I think he'll be fine very soon. He ate his probiotic with food just now; I have yet to pill him.

I'm glad someone else liked the vid! :-)

[identity profile] jecono.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope Sebastian will be fine soon!

And sorry to hear about your computer problems, that can be such a hassle! :( I have to catch up on your posts...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think he will be; he's very bouncy and healthy otherwise.

At least I have this PC even if it has a different operating system. I daresay my new one will have the same.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor Sebastian, glad he's otherwise fine

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
He is, and he gobbled his new soft food done with the probiotic just now. I'll try him with a pill this evening.

He'd like to go outside but it's a bit too cold to leave the door open as I have been doing and he hasn't figured the cat door out yet.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww poor Sebastian! Though it is often the way when kittens move to a new home and diet. Hope he recovers soon for your sake too, dribbling kitty is no fun to clean up after.

I Hope you can at least recover the data from the hard drive of the dead PC.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think he likes it either. I suspect the "accidents" outside the litter are because he's offended too. He does seem better already and he ate his new soft food with a probiotic mixed in with his usual gusto. He's in here with me playing with a sunbeam on the floor. :-)

I'm hoping so. Greg's an expert at that sort of thing.

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I hope Sebastian feels better soon, poor little guy. Hopefully he won't give you a problem with pills.

Those weather bombs are scary. Sorry your PC got fried but hopefully you'll be able to save the data.

And I love that video. Very cool. :o)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think we will save the data, and maybe the PC if it's just a hardware problem. Otherwise it will be a new one I suppose.

Sebastian seems better already and has been having fun outside today since it's been a beautiful fine sunny (if cold) day after the storm. I'm not looking forward to pilling him this evening but at least it's only once a day and he eats his probiotic well in food.
