Christchurch update

Greg's managed to either talk to or hear about everyone in his family and they're all fine (though their houses may not be). It was as I'd thought: the lack of power and cell-phone towers were why people were hard to contact.

It's not so good for others though. I heard two buses were crushed and people are still trapped in buildings. The last I heard there are 65 confirmed dead, 80% of the city is without power and a lot of people don't have water either.

I'm relieved to hear your relatives are OK. I hope the people currently unaccounted for will be fine, too. I watched some of the news coverage tonight, but it was an emotional experience.

Heard about this on the radio first thing this morning and thought of you. Glad to hear that nobody close to you appears to have been hurt.

What a relief for you and your family. Horrible news in general though,it's going to be a tough rebuilding process.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
It is. A lot of people won't be earning or have homes for a while.

I'm relieved about Greg's family. *hugs*

When the last quake happened I watched and obviously felt very saddened, but it was a little distant. I remembered Christchurch from 6 years ago and felt the same sadness you would for any disaster, heightened when it's in the country you live in. This time I was in Christchurch over the weekend returning late yesterday and was taken around the CBD and some of the streets and saw the rebuilding. Watching the destruction this time around is just so disheartening and devastating and the deaths make it more so!

I'm glad that all the family are well, I just hope that everyone has the resilience to start yet again to rebuild their homes and their livelihoods.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't realise you were down there. That must make it much more difficult when you've seen how well they'd done. :-(

Very relieved to hear that Greg's family are all right. I've just woken up and couldn't believe the pictures on the news here.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a lot of the buildings were weakened by the previous quakes and have collapsed, but others are almost untouched. It horrible. I'm just glad it's summer so people won't be cold as well.

So many dead - I'm so, so sorry. Thank goodness Greg's family is all right. that must have been a terrifying few hours.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think they've taken it better than last time, strangely enough. Maybe they've got used to all the aftershakes.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
So glad for you and Greg, so terribly sad for the people of Christchurch...

Watching the news now; awful. Glad you and Greg are OK.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. We're at the other end of the country, but it was a tense few hours trying to contact people or hear from them.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
I woke up to the news this morning and immediately thought of you and Greg. I am glad to hear that his family are all OK, that makes the devastation a lot less personal but my heart goes out to those who weren't so lucky.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
Mine too. I hope they get the trapped people out. They've got specialist rescue teams going in which is good.

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Very glad Greg's family is safe.

So sorry for all those people :(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-02-24 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. They've rescued a lot but there are more still trapped.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm relieved that you and yours are all OK, but sad to hear about all the death and devastation. It was the lead item on the radio news bulletin this morning, and I immediately thought of you. My fallible memory couldn't recall which NZ city you live in, and I hoped that it wasn't Christchurch.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-02-24 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of people are affected no matter where they live; it's our second-biggest city.

[identity profile] blencathra.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm relieved that your friends and family are all safe. The devastation looks dreadful and I hope that anyone trapped is soon rescued. I'm thankful that at least it isn't cold & rainy.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-02-24 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been raining which is unfortunate, but OTOH people might be able to collect rainwater. They've rescued a lot but there are still people unaccounted for. Of course many could have gone to friends or be in areas without power or cell-phone coverage.

[identity profile] green-maia.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so glad that everyone in Greg's family is okay.

I am holding everyone in Christchurch in my thoughts.

*Hugs*

Very glad that your own people are safe, and hope the damage to their homes isn't too horrific. Sympathies to those who haven't been so lucky.

Thank you. It's hard to find words about what's happened to some people.

Good to hear that Greg's family is OK. I've heard, via the Croquet BB, that our friends are OK as well. Eldest played in the world championship in Christchurch a few years ago and recognised some of the places in the pictures.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad to know that you and yours are safe. But, oh, man. That's so much worse than last time. :(

It's an awful event, and I am glad nobody close to you is hurt, but of course other families are not so lucky. Best wishes to your countrymen.
